I didnt mean that the Incantation system had to be strictly ported to the new book as-is, it most certainly could have been tweaked to fit within current Magic "power levels" and yet retain it's uniqueness, however.

If the whole "bandwagon" thing doesnt bother you, more power to you. It's more of a problem in 40k than it is in WFB anyway, IMO. Regardless, opinions are like certain body parts, and I certainly have mine.

Is it bandwagoning if you've had 3k+ points of them for 6 months but have only played once prior to the new codex?

Man, take a chill pill.

There is a differance between band wagoning and buying something because it's either a new product, you've always had an intertest or you're updating an army you have. There are people who buy every new army just because it's what everyone else is getting or because it's the new powerfull thing and they want the most powerfull army. Wether you hate it or not it's a fact that people do it and it's perfectly fine to discuss it here. No one is throwing around names and no one is saying that everyone who buys the new TK is buying them for the that reason. So if you don't like that people talk about band wagoning then ignore the posts that have them.

I guess it just bugs me that anyone that hasn't been using them for years is now branded a band wagoner by a lot of people. It's not worth ranting about any further and I don't want to derail the thread - it just irks me.

On a totall unrelated note, I'll be starting my TK army shortly...

I myself taste two flavors of bitterness about TK in particular.

One at 'armybook creep', assuming that TK are as strong as they very well could be, but in ways that take the game in unsavory directions - more overpowered and/or undercosted monsters, and more reliance upon magic and the items / abilities to gain an advantage over other armies without those options. (The latter is speculation but they are certainly going to be giving the TK some kind of magical boon, since they need it to survive in the Grimdark Past. Unless their monsters are THAT awesome )

Two is jealousy for the LEGION of new players flooding in from 40k and other systems to pick up fantasy with TK, or those with relatively few armies weighing them down so that they can enjoy a shiny new book at their leisure. Me, I've got my skaven (painted and fun), ogres (3/4 painted and abandoned), and warriors (primed for a couple years now but boring as hell). I can't really start a 4th army with so much backlog, but then my alternate armies are both somewhat boring to play (warriors I've retolled to be maniacal, but ogres still blow) and involve a ton of painting I'm not really that inspired to do. So I'd love to start TK ... but I've wanted to start TK for over a decade, never got to it, and now have to watch as loads of people pile into a really cool and perhaps really broken army.

And then smash them to hell with my skaven, as long as I can keep the necrosphinxes off my hellpit

I was really wowed by the new TK models up for advance order. I've never really been a fan of TK models or fluff but those necropolis knights and warsphinx make me want to buy models for an army and a system that I don't play.

I am a very strong proponent of play what you enjoy, and the hell with everyone else.

However, I myself dont enjoy having my army do all the work for me. I also prefer to play armies that arent seen all over the place.

I loved the fluff and look of the daemon army, but I refused to play it in 7th, cause no matter how good you were people would attribute your wins to the fact that you were a daemon player.

Once 8th came out and they cooled down in the OP department I picked them up and love them. I loved painting them, playing them, and building list.

I loved skaven in 7th edition because it was a very fun army to play, now, in 8th its (imo) OTT. (the GT I went to this weekend was proof of that). So they dont see as much play from me.

Guess the point im trying to make is do what you want, and more importantly do what you enjoy. Trust me, from personal experience you will enjoy losing with an army you enjoy, way more then winning with an army you picked up just to roll faces.

I really do hope that it didn't come across that I was labeling everyone who starts Tomb Kings now as a band wagoner as that's not the case. But there are players who do it for those reasons and those reasons alone, I myself have always liked the TK. When I started playing 10 years ago I had the choice of either doing TK or Lizardmen, I choose to do Lizardmen but about 5 years ago I decided to do TK to and now am just updating after just collecting/converting them and not really playing. Everyone has their reasons for doing it but there are those who do it for bandwagon purposes, that dosen't mean when someone says band wagoners they mean every person who is going to by the army.

Im going to get them, and im not bandwagoning.....

I got my 4 armies over the course of 12-18 months, and now when a new book comes out I grab it and pick up the minis for it, just to play around with it.

I don't like the snake-dudes, but I don't hate 'em. I suppose they needed new units anyway. Necrosphinx = Win, though the Warsphinx is kinda meh with the arms. Still, it would make an epic terrain piece...

How are the rules though? Still haven't heard...

TK deserved it, and they got a good deal. Luckily my friend left TK for good, so I can sneak in and pick up his stuff for discounts! =D

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Gonna have to agree with people defending the "band wagon" jumping.
If you like the new minis and the new rules you should go out and buy/ play the new army, forget about everyone that says otherwise.

Besides, in a few months another army will come out and either replace the impulse buy or people will just get bored with learning a new army and switch back to their standard force.

I for one am considering tk, always loved the ancient Egyptian feel and updated minis
make them all the more appealing.

Band-wagoners are the greatest people in the world, I love them dearly. They are the ones that contribute to my ever-growing collection, as their usually unassembled/NIB purchases wind their way onto bartertown whenever the next new army comes out.

For example, I want to start a Grey Knight army, but trading for them is difficult because they are in such high demand. In 4-5 months, though, when the Necrons have shown up and the new shine has faded, there will be buckets of Grey Knight models up for trade.

I'm pretty sure the OP made it clear that not everyone who is buying the new TK is a Bandwagoner and so he wasen't refering to everyone as Bandwagoners. So I'm not sure they need "defending" since it isn't like he's attacking them or anything, he just said that he wonders how many of them there will be since there are players who do it. Tomb Kings where my first army and I've always owned them, and there are people I know who've never had an enterest in them but have said that they are going to get the new army simply based off of how powerfull it is. As a long time TK player that dosen't really sit well with me for some reason because I don't think it's right to buy a new army just because it's the next powerfull thing. It does suck though that GW chooses now to re-do the TK when I've decided to put down WHFB because I don't like 5th edition

I was actually planning on picking up Tomb Kings as my next army, but then I saw the new book and changed my mind...

They are so incredibly different from 7th (which was why I wanted to play them) that they dont appeal to me any more.

No incantations, it was mainly a oh fun, something else to do in the magic phase.

In ur gaem, killin ur doodz.

That's actually what's got me on the fence about them Odin.

I started them way back in 6th right after they came out. I honed a particular play-style into a fine edge with which I became a pretty feared player in my area. I even learned how to use the Heavy Cavalry, and Light cavalry to great affect.

The new book has destroyed that play-style. Instead of being a finesse based army, they are simply a brute-force army that requires a successful magic phase to add the "brute" to the "force". I'll probaly still play them, because they are the only models I own, but I'm going to keep an eye on the wood elves, because they are a notorious "finesse" army, and I like outplaying my opponent

I was waiting for this book to come out to start playing 8th. But now that I've seen it, I think I'll take a pass.

- I'm not too keen on the new models. I like that they got the Sphinx added, but I don't really like the look of it. I think part of it is the excessive amount of gold on the thing.

Cobras - meh, but not great.
Snake surfers - NO!

I'm completely disappointed by the magic phase. In the previous edition, TK balanced incantations that automatically went off with a rigid casting system and weak incantations. Now they have a completely mainstreamed magic phase.

We lost what's probably our best banner (the one that allowed a unit to change its facing before charges were declared...), and kept the worst of the lot (the one that buries a unit underground). While the latter got tweaked, any usefulness of the tweaks was completely destroyed when GW increased the points cost to 90 points.

The feeling I get from looking at it all is that whoever wrote the book had never actually played a game that had Tomb Kings on either side.

Improved incantations would be horribly broken in 8th edition.

During 7th edition the thing that was so nice about dispelling incantations is you could attempt to dice match their kings/princes by throwing one dice at the spell...

With autofails on 1's and 2's that is no longer an option, which would give them an insane advantage...

Unless they completely killed the incantation system.

I'll chime in on the hate it faction. I liked the unrelenting feel to thier magic phase. The spells weren't really that fantastic but they felt suited to the undead feel of the faction. The shift to a standard magic phase takes the unique feel away from them yet they keep the army wide crumble if thier main caster dies. Between the fear change from 8th and the change to thier unique magic phase my TombKings lost all thier fun for me. So much so that my army went up on ebay last week. For the standard magic phase i'll play my High Elves who don't start dying when my wizard detonates himself. My favorite Ushabti unit is now less fun as well, going the boring route of minotaurs with great weapons. Having a bow option seems silly as well, that should have been it's own entry. The only TK model I am keeping is Khalida. I like her fluff and the model is nice. As for the new models, they look great. I like the sphinx and the snake guys, but i don't like thier prices. I had the TK army that i liked to play and it's no longer viable or possible without a large sum of cash dropped on new units. I do hope they see some success as i love the faction, I just don't want to play them under the new rules.

Having picked up a fully painted Battalion recently for less than an unpainted one (god bless ebay) which added a good third battalion

Quite happy with new army book

like the cover,
Hardback, softback - meh
Some nice new artwork
Would have aliked mre background / fluff material
Pity truncated the map and removed some of the interesting cities and places - the Arabian lands and raiders, and a few of the Kings like Tutankhanut.

Like the Necroteks
not sure about the Necropolis Knights / Sepulchral Stalkers (or the models)
Ushabti with bows - very cool idea and models - finally something to match my Rackham Devourer Huntsmen (and a use for them too I guess.......)
Warsphinx - very cool
Necrosphnix - pretty good
Pity the trend is now for only a few magic items and so many bound items :(

Overall - good stuff
