Which of the Ghosts novels are you on right now Mel?
"The Saint" was definitely the most boring of the arcs.

"The Founding" and "The Lost" are definitely the more action driven ones.

I liked the Saint Arc cause it introduced the Blood Pact and helplped you understand Gaunt better, so action ise i wasn't as good but charaterwise it was excellent. The Lost was pretty darn good and i wish that WIlder was still around, it would casue problems but he was a good character

The best books that have blown me away are, in no particular order: Eisenhorn, The opening trilogy of the HH, Fulgrim, The First Heretic, Soul Hunter, Daemon World, Blood Gorgons, Storm Of Iron, The Grey Knight Omnibus and The Magical Legend Of The Leprechauns (awesome, awesome to the head).

You won't go far wrong with any of them. The last one however MIGHT give you manic depression and cause projectile vomiting but it IS awesome.

The third one, Necropolis. It's not doing that badly as far as pacing goes.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

"Necropolis" was definitely the winner of "The Founding" arc, although they were all pretty good. "First & Only" kind of jumped around a bit and was irksome.

When you get to "The Saint" arc you'll see what I'm talking about. "Honor Guard" and "Straight Silver" are really kinda 'duds' in an otherwise fantastic series.

"The Saint" gets into a bit of a rut but its still better than most of the stuff in BL.

I've never heard GG described as too slow, usually it's criticised for being too action oriented.

Parts of them take a bit to build up to "the good stuff".

I guess so. I didn't have any problems with the pace. It's been a while but I remeber them going at a pretty fast clip other than Aexe Cardinal. My least favorite of the series is actually the most recent one though: Blood Pact.

See, I actually liked Blood Pact best so far. It was new territory, stuff we've never really seen explored before.

Really? It has the most of what I would think you would call "the slow stuff". I don't think it breaks new ground either. It's the direct, if not spiritual sequel to Traitor General. I found it a less interesting version of Traitor General.

It's the direct opposite of Traitor General. It's a Chaos kill-team trying to shut up a Blood Pact general.

Not only that, but it was nice to see what a world that the Imperium has reconquered goes through.

Plus, the action sequences(Larkin firing from the Valkyrie, the S-Company Stormtroopers, etc) were more than enough to keep me happy.

I don't think Balhaut was reconquered just a turning point in the crusade. The Armour of Contempt covers an Imperial liberation perfectly imo. Anyways, to each his own.

It took me a while to get into sync with Bloo Pact bu once you do it is a fantastic nnovel and has Blenner and Gaunt with his new eyes and how he is coping after a year off the front line. It's also quite ammussing hearing about his "Death"

I recommend the Tome of Fire trilogy, by Nick Kyme. I also recommend Soul Hunter (author escapes me) and Let the Galaxy Burn, a collection of short stories.

Scanlon's "15 Hours" is the best thing they've published yet. Get it in the Imperial Guard omnibus - all those stories were pretty entertaining.

I really didn't think I would like it, but Farrer's "Enforcer" series of Shia Calpurnia stories were excellent. She's an Arbites Enforcer - it's a neat mash-up of detective fiction and 40K GrimDark.

Henry Zou's stuff has been great so far, too. Flesh and Iron and Blood Gorgons were both fine stuff - good portrayals of Chaos. Emperor's Mercy was okay, but a bit more derivative of other "Inquisitor" stuff. I'm getting sick of Inquisitors and Space Marines!

Alles klar, eh, Kommissar?

The Malus Darkblade books are incredible too. Even if WFB isn't your thing I would still very much recommend them.

Also, I know they are not BL titles but I strongly recommend any reader who enjoys books of that ilk to check out David Gemmell. Sadly he passed away a few years ago following complications heart bypass surgery but his books are, in a word, INSPIRATIONAL, I kid you not. Iv'e read EVERY book of his at least twice. Indeed Graham McNeill cites him as one of his favorite authors. A good place to start would be his first book 'Legend' and you will see what I mean.

I can't help but wonder what he could have done for WFB or even 40k come to think of it. Mr Gemmell you will be greatly missed R.I.P.

DEFINITLEY Gaunt's Ghosts, Fifteen Hours was good to. The Ciaphas Cain books were okay but not my favorite. The Soul Drinker Series is okay (i havent finished it yet), get a little dry in some parts. Ravenor is good. The whole first person thing in Eisenhorn threw me off, so I put it down, but I will try it again later. The Night Lord books are good (especially if your a fan of Chaos and gore).

#1 Reccomendation: Soul Hunter

I haven't had a chance to read the sequel yet, but I can't wait to get my hands on it. Soul Hunter was fantastic, and a definite insight into the world of the Night Lords. Renegades amongst renegades.
