Subject: Calling all foreigners, do YOU care about the Royal Wedding? Or did Charles and Di kill it off?
I do wonder what happened to all the fuss about the bank holidays all being impractically close together. Businesses have been up in arms about it in previous years. I wonder how much this extra day off costs the UK economy.

I don`t care much, really. The Norwegian royals are more than enough:
Spoiler:
On 22 June 2007, Märtha Louise and business partner, former ship mechanic Elisabeth Samnøy, announced the planned opening of a new private school, Astarte Education, in Oslo. According to the information on the company's official webpage, the school will offer a three year program, at the cost of 12,000 Norwegian kroner (about $2100 US) per semester, in which students will be introduced to the techniques of healing and reading. Märtha Louise also promised that the school will teach students to communicate with angels. The slogan of the school is "Use angels and your own power to create miracles in your life". The course began on 22 August 2007 and the classes filled up immediately.[9] The address listed on the website is the princess' own home address at her home in Lommedalen, west of Oslo, and the phone number listed on the official website is the Royal Palace phone number.[10]
The princess has come under media scrutiny in Norway after the announcement, with some, such as the newspaper Bergens Tidende, calling for her to give up her royal titles. Swedish author and columnist Jan Guillou urged Märtha Louise to "seek treatment".[11] Norwegian state director of Health Lars E. Hanssen, prominent Norwegian alternative medicine advocate Dr. Bernt Rognlien, Norwegian technical university NTNU religious historian Asbjørn Dyrendal and University of Oslo theology professor Inge Lønning all expressed misgivings about the princess' plans.[12] Others have suggested she be excommunicated from the state Evangelical Lutheran Church. Norwegian televangelist Jan Hanvold accused the princess of "blasphemy" and said she was "an emissary from hell."[9]
On 11 August 2007, Märtha Louise defended the school on NRK, the Norwegian public service television network.[13]

I think the concept of royal weddings is vaguely romantic and charming. I like that pomp and circumstance exist in the world, even though I'm not paying any attention to the wedding. It's just a cheerful, pleasant irrelevancy in the corner of my eye, so to speak.

Not much, probably. It will be a boost to tourism, booze, cake and DIY sales and so on. That will probably offset the disastrous effect of me not going to work for one day -- I'll be down to B&Q for a jig saw and a load of hardboard.
The Government estimates that an additional bank holiday costs the economy £2.9 billion.
The CBI puts the figure at £6 billion and the TUC estimates £1.2 billion.
What is definately going to be awkward for a lot of businesses is that Friday April 29 would normally have been the last business day of their financial year. With Good Friday being the week before and the Easter Monday holiday on 25th April (as well as the holiday on Monday 2nd May), a lot of people will be trying to avoid working for the entire week after Easter -- I'm having a nice and extended week + off for only a few days leave .
A lot of businesses are going to lose the whole of their last week’s trading for the financial year.
Damned if they damned if they don't here I guess.

In truth, I'm British and I neither care nor have any misgivings about the whole thing. The Royal family is part of the Culture of Britain so whilst I myself might not be interested in the slightest about it, I know there are plenty of people in the UK that do care.
As for foreigners, I suppose it would be subjective, only those that have an interest in the UK would be Interested. For the same reason I would find myself completely uninterested if we were talking about a new president for France for example. Libya however I am interested in because of the impact its having. So its all relative in my opinion.
Actually .. upon further reflection I am interested in the Royal Wedding, but only in so much as knowing I'm getting an extra day off from work

I don't care about any country's royal family, never have. Face it, they're just like mascots of the British nation. Nothing but really expensive pets. I'm not saying that we Americans don't have pretty much the same sort of thing. I mean, aside from small parts in a couple of atrociously bad scary movies, what has Paris Hilton ever actually done?

You do realise that Northern Ireland is under UK control right? (legally anyway)
Actually I think you'll find that despite the sword of rulership of Ireland in the tower of london, northern Ireland belongs to the Irish. You've just not given it back. (and to be honest I don't know why they'd o back - the RoI is a hole of doom at the moment!)

I do, however, it is still a "country", rather than a "county", as it should be

Northern Ireland belongs to the Norther Irish, who, if I recall, have elected to remain part of the UK rather than being their own fully independent country or rejoining Ireland.

I think its tacky. It peppers news broadcasts over here in the United States and reminds me of just how shallow and easily excited people get about celebrity. Selling commemorative replica engagement rings on late night TV? Really?
I don't resent or feel inspired by Kate Middleton, or feel some warm fuzzy feeling that she gets to be a princess while her family is only extremely wealthy but not royal. I don't care about her, she is about as close to interesting to me as a random person I might see at the other end of an aisle in the supermarket.
I really don't care at all about the weddings of people I don't know. I don't wish to pretend to know inside gossip about people I don't know, or talk about them as if they are some kind of special friend in spirit who I understand or feel some need to root for.
What I care about is the amount of noise I have to put up with on the television news in between important things I would actually like to know about. You know, news that might actually be about important events in the world. In other news Anna Nicole smith is still dead, Charlie Sheen is still crazy, and Lindsay Lohan did something bad.
I live in the United States but have British citizenship, so you'd think some kind of nationalistic pride interest might be there. But nope, just annoyance.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.

I don't really care about the wedding. Good for them though.

Sounded good at the start then went downhill fast.
GazzyG wrote:I'd be more impressed with the wedding if they got jobs, saved hard and paid for it themselves in order to show people how it should be done.
They have jobs.
As for saving hard they have means, what of it. Unless you are talking about them 'scrounging' off the civil list. The Royal estates have an income far in excess of the civil list, all that goes to the treasury in return for what appears to be a handout.
It would be like the government taxing your assets at near 100%, giving you state benefit and leaving it for people to imply you are a a burden on the populace.
Call yourself a Royalist.

Agreed. If Northern Ireland wants to stay British it can, democracy in action and all that. Also a united Ireland is an English invention anyway.
