Because the minatures and fluff are cool, i enjoy assembling and painting them (which i find odd considering i hated art and school) and i like testing my tactical acumen against others. The whole idea of controlling an army which you use to outwit and overpower your opponent really appeals to me.

Ever since that game of the battle of maccrage in 2006, I've been hooked

I like the tactics, i really like imagining whats going on in my head like an entire platoon being eviscerated by orks, or a valkyrie crash landing and the valiant Guardsmen hopping out and carrying on with their duties.

I don't actually really play. I'm in the hobby because I enjoy painting and tormenting the dregs of the hobby.

For the good storylines, the tough, solid tone of the game. It only comes about occasionally, but when it does, it is a great, great feeling. For example, see the attached webcomic. It's that kind of hard, determined looks at life that really stand out among the other entertainment veins.

I love the Fluff and just hanging out with friends - I'm not too serious about playing, but I really enjoy it

If I was purely in it for competition, I'd probably play Warmahordes, or Chess. But I enjoy the larger scale of the armies and the visual of the game much more in 40k and WHFB, so clearly I'm not just in it for the competition.

Funny. Around here its 40k that brings out the competitive types. I guess it's not the game, but the player, huh?

I paint because it's cathartic for me. And I play because I really love seeing my builds work against other builds, the meta game in collectable games.

My local game store owner and I had this very discussion today. I was telling him that a lot of my love of FoW comes from not only the love of history, but the fact that there is six year old in all of us that wants to see crap blow the hell up. (not the exact wording....) I'm in it for the destruction.

I love to play & paint

I love getting involved/lost in the fantasy and sci fi worlds, being creative and using my imagination.

Much better than being a zombie watching tv/playing video games all the time IMO

It's all an excuse to justify all the hours spents painting toy soldiers.

Stranger: so let me get this straight...you spend hundreds of hours sitting around painting little figures?

Me: well it's for a game...

Yeah...that sounds sane.

I don't really play anymore, just no time on weekends and not enough after work. Well, I do get 2 or 3 games a year if that counts. But I just paint and model stuff in the spare time I do have, cuz it's fun

Lots of reasons. The background is superb especially 40k. Painting and modelling lets me indulge my creative side. The games are excellent especially warhammer. They're strangely relaxing i'm often quite chilled after a good game. The constant tactics and problem solving during a game are a good brain exercise. The sight of a fully (ish) painted army on the tabletop is a brilliant sight....especially if its yours. The sheer scale and depth of the hobby is a big plus the inspiration just from the gallery section on dakka dakka is awesome.

I play for many reasons. The minis look really good (well most of them do anyways) specially when a whole army in on the table. Its a challenge to think of a scheme for your army, and then paint them to how you see them in your mind. Not to mention its just good fun hanging with a few friends for a couple hours blowing gak up and just hanging out. Add a BBQ and some drinks and youve got yourself an evening

I play mainly because I find 40K fun. And it's a great social game.

I've always loved miniatures but never really got into collecting them until recently.

I also consider myself an artist, not a very good one mind you. But I've lost all inspiration for my drawing recently; painting & modelling minis has given me a release for my creativity.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

I've played with miniature figures since I was 5. Back when I was 5 and they were still made out of lead, it was amazing to me just to have half a dozen grenadier orc figures at $1.00 a piece, that was weeks of saving up my $1.00 allowance. It was like a whole army! I still love toy figures, just now we get more of them, paint them better, and have more depthy rules about it - but it still makes me feel like a kid, playing with my "D&D Men"

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.
