Maybe "Why do WE play?" is a better question. In any case, what makes you play collect, paint and battle models like you do?

I don't really play anymore because I have a lot of other stuff going on in my life. I collect and paint because I love toy soldiers. I collect and paint 40k because I really like the background and the models strike my fancy.

Well, I've spent all this money. It'd be a shame not to.

Because I love testing myself in a game that is so wildly variable, you never know what's going to happen. I like to challenge myself to be able to overcome the odds and outwit my opponent.

That, and the fluff is cool

I play because I enjoy quality rules.

This is why it's been...
5 years since I've played Fantasy
2 years since I've played 40k
6 months since I've played Firestorm Armada
4 months since I've played Warmahordes

Monsterpocalypse is getting pretty lonely here in the "good game" category.

I collect miniatures (40k, EM4, Demonblade, etc) because I like them and I enjoy converting models.

I paint because I like the result (don't like actually painting) and so that I can play with them, as I detest playing with unpainted figs.

I play games (Song of Blades, Wastelands, mech attack, Future War Commander etc. and some 40k) partly because of the wonderfull spectacle of painted armies on a battlefield, but mostly because of the people inolved. That is to say I finally found a group of friends that I like hanging out with that want to play the kinds of games (fast-playing, generic sci-fi and fantasy skirmish) that I want to play.

This group of people, more than anything has kept me regularly gaming at least bi-weekly for a year, whereas for the past decade and a half I've gamed very little and drifted in and out of wargaming every 6 months or so.

So right now it's about the friends.

I paint because it gives me an avenue to be creative and develop a skill set.

I play to socialise with like-minded individuals.

I DM because I enjoy the thrill of discovering how my PCs will overcome the clever obstacles that I place bfore them.

I love tactical, competive gaming. I also love the spectacle of an army on the field. And the backstory of the game.

If I was purely in it for competition, I'd probably play Warmahordes, or Chess. But I enjoy the larger scale of the armies and the visual of the game much more in 40k and WHFB, so clearly I'm not just in it for the competition.

Why do we play?

To answer that question, I will quote Machine Gun Joe Viturbo from Roger Corman's classic "Death Race 2000" (the one with Sly Stallone and David Carradine, not the abortion that came out a year or two ago)

Joe's Navigator Myra-"Why do you wanna win this race so bad?"

Machine gun Joe- "Why do I wanna win this race so bad? HATE! One big victory for HATE!"

I play because the fluff is awesome, the minis look cool, and the game is fun.

Most of all, it is social outlet with people who are very accepting and non-judgmental. Also, my roommate plays and keeps me motivated to paint my hundreds of models.

I model and paint mostly because of the good feeling I get when finishing a really well painted model or conversion. I play because it is a good way of getting social (something I'm not that good at when facing a person in real life).

I paint to kill migraines. The concentration required tends to distract me from the pain. I also love the sight of a fully painted, based and detailed unit on the field. I'm not too fond of painting, nor particularly good at it, but i do like the results.I have a long long road of headaches to get my waagh all done though

Modelling/conversion: i'm a mekboy at heart, and love converting/building wierd and wonderful stuff I have a twitch if there is an unopened box of minis on my workbench, which only quits when they are off the sprues and i have glue in hand

Collecting: I'm an obsessive collector. My two current armies are nearing codex-complete after many years of collecting, at least until a new codex breaks

Playing: I love playing the game against a fun opponent, who is smart enough to be challenging (preferably a little smarter than me ) and plays the game as a game not a legal argument It's a great stress-sink and lets me stretch my tactics

Why do I play....hmm....

I play for many reasons:

- I play to paint
- I play because ive always been into collecting one thing or another throughout my life
- I play because I love having a creative outlet
- I play because due to my focus on school, I have narrowed my 4 major hobbies down to 1 and 40k gave me the most enjoyment.
- I play because ive always been into games where you micro manage a bunch of stuff (RTS are my fav!)
- I play because I like to do things that arent popular and trendy, or maybe I just gravitate to things like that naturally. If GW was truely mainstream with lots of players id probably hang it up.

hmm, I guess that why I play.

4250 points of Blood Angels goodness, sweet and silky W12-L6-D4
1000 points of Teil-Shan (my own scheme) Eldar Craftworld in progress
800 points of unassembled Urban themed Imperial Guard

675 points of Commoraghs finest!

I've been at it since I was 16, why quite now.
I've got all these painted models, might as well use them
I'm blessed with a gaming group of about 15 guys, we all play the same games, but most importantly...

Those 15 guys, we use it as an excuse to get together socially, throw to dice around, and have a good time. Then several times a year, we goto these GT's, and play against these other times and have some laughs while ignoring real life for a weekend.

Lastly: because terminators are just plan old cool looking, and the forgeworld ones are even better.

I like the challenge against myself to paint good-looking models. When I see a really nicely painted model in the gallery or in the painting and modelling forum, I get fired up to paint my next model even better, develop new ideas for painting, etc.

I'm more a painter than a player, but I'm getting back into playing because there's a pretty competitive group at my FLGS, and I'm an alpha male and I thrive on competition.

I like the aesthetic of the game. I like the memories I have attached to when I first got into it back in RT/2nd ed.

I like how it's not always about the meta, and that a list with 12 lascannon havocs will get laughed off the forum, but can still make someone's donkey-cave slam shut when it shuts down three tanks first turn. I like how no game is the same.
