Baneblade transports are effectively "this many guys stand on top of it and shoot", so I don't see how it would be too different for mortars in chims. In any case, mortars don't belong in transports, they belong out of LoS. Or on the shelf.

In larger games, I would take a few if I was stuck for real estate. The point above where they can always shoot, and never need to move, is one of their main strengths. You *can* pin that far-away squad, or make them run with some good rolls, or maybe you won't. Is the chance to make them run or pinned worth their points? Is their defensive style worth the HWT trade-off? All of these factors depend on the rest of your list, and what your opponents are likely to bring.

You need a casualty for that.

They are cheap, and if you get a hit the rules for multiple barrages can make that hit pretty dangerous. But don't overestimate the raw killing power of the weapon, it's still just S4.

I'd much rather have a griffon than a unit of mortar teams.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention that.

Griffon - 75 points, S6 AP4 Ordance barrage, with re-rollable scatter

So for 15 extra points, eff the autocannons, put a griffon behind ur russ line or bulding and laugh as you put down pie plates that can hurt almost anything on foot. In a pinch it can tackle light vehicles thanks to the ordance rule, not to mention it hits on side armour (im pretty sure thats the rule for barrage right?). However, for those who want WYSIWYG, have fun paying foregworld.

This is my Leman Russ. There are many out there like it, but this one is mine. Without it, I am useless. Without me, it is useless.

Obliterators: They've got a gun for that.

Its better taking them behind cover and have another sqaud of HWT's with auto cannons or HB as a defence and the can take pot shots at the enemy from a decent range.

Griffons are great but I doubt you'll see a lot of them simply because there are other better choices from the Heavy Support section. At the same time, IG has a nearly unlimted selection of troop slots with Platoons so you can always fit in another squad or three.

For example, if given the choice between using Hydras/Mortar squads or Griffons/AC squads I think most people would take the first option.
