I played a game where I was testing out a Ravenwing list, and all of my bikers and Landspeeders where flat cut out pieces of cereal boxes. The game went fine anyways, I detest painting. I only have one fully painted army, and that is my Uruk force for LotR. My dark angles are mostly painted, but only two squads were actually given a proper painting, the rest were just spray painted a dark green and then I used a marker to go over details, looks fine from afar.
I frequently play with my younger brother's friends. Since they frequently don't have the money nor parents willing to shelve out hundreds of dollars for plasticrack, I usually end up playing against something that isn't what it actually is. It doesn't really bother me, I would play this game with cardboard cut-outs if it didn't have such bitchin models to use, heck I play Napoleonics with just cardboard rectangles and a grass mat with some books underneath.

I'm going to humor the op and not vote.
If I did vote, it would be for the bottom choice... the one about the chits and a map. As much as I love to paint I also like to play games.

I would prefer painted/work in progress WYSIWYG, but that's not possible for everyone.
I'm fine with non-painted non-WYSIWYG, otherwise I wouldn't have many people to play. Proxies are fine if you're thinking of starting an army.

Painting and modelling is a major part of my hobby and yet i still voted as i do actually play the game.
I voted for Unpainted, non WYSIWYG armies as that is the minimum I would allow my opponent to use, sorry paper cut outs just dont cut it... All thats required is that they belong from the specific army, IE if im playing against necrons i want to see necrons on the board not play necrons and then see tyranids.
However I myself will field half built but what i field is mostly painted only with my opponents permission. While most of my models are armless or headless 9/10 times theres always a comment about how good they look.
I feel that you excluding painters/modellers from the poll makes its somewhat biased as even though alot of people prefer to paint they may allow their opponent you use paperclips as a Chaos Defiler.
Edit: If there was an option for allowing partially built models to be used then I would have selected that instead of Unpainted, non WYSIWYG before anybody starts saying that its unfair i field half built models and they need to field fully built models.
Atm i currently proxy 5 models in my army, 5 terminators which are Obliterators purely because i hate metal models. And they always count as Oblits or Termis, never both.

It is a sea of bare metal... last year there were 3 forces that had paint on them, but not even tabletop standard.
If you dont see a direct relation of a company policy towards promoting the painting/ modelling and the kind of people it attracts is not my problem.
Also you refer to the "players" of that game has you actually know them all. Diferent countries, diferent people, diferent clubs, diferent associations diferent ratio of painted armies... seems silly to label every single warmahordes folk as non painter just because your very limited prespective tells you so.
Warmachine and Hordes do not require painting at most of their official events; with the result that it is very much part of their player culture that painting is optional, and a significantly smaller percentage of tournament players bother.
It may be the case that a similar proportion of 40k players play unpainted at home or in their local store, but at the showcase events direcly organized and/or supported by the company, there is a clear distinction. This isn't just the case in North America, either.

I chose proxy armies, to a certain point. It is how I started out but even then the people I started playing with only gave me X amount of time on deciding to play or not cause they preferred atleast the actual models, painting optional.

I voted unpainted non-WYSIWYG. Why? Because I ask for army lists and always have it next to me during the game, and I make personal notes as to what squad is what.
If someone is testing out another army, I could care less what models he's using for count-as as long as the base sizes are the same.
I personally field painted WYSIWYG, mainly because it's easier on me and I magnetize all of my models that have multiple wargear options (unless it's something that they ALWAYS take, like a Nob with PK and BP).

I remember the card representations you got in 2nd Ed 40k & in 3/4 ed Warhammer (w/Grom the Paunch)? They were immense.
I wouldn't mind playing with anything so long as the scale was right - a high quailty printed, in scale card cut out would do me
Obviously I love painting/modelling but if needs must I don't see a problem with anything. I remember cutting out circles of white paper and scenery and writing what was what as a kid back in 2nd - just so my brother and I could play with units we didn't have/couldn't afford - with some imagination you can make anything work

When I first tried out deffrollas on BW I didnt have any, so I taped some asprin bottles (literally taped) to the fronts of my wagons. It oddly enough looked like something an Ork would do anyways. But we play WYSIWYG in most cases. For someone just starting out we let it slide a bit but try to keep it decent as possible.

It depends... generally I like to play wyswyg... I'm happy for someone who's making their army to say 'my meltas are plasma guns' so long as it's consistent. I don't mind armless minis if people are in the process of assembly, if they're not bothering (ie turning up with the same crap week after week) then probably not.
I also don't mind people proxying before they buy. IE using regular marines as a BA jumper army before buying BA for example

I agree mostly with what you said there. We allow the softer stuff to happen with new players. And if your thinking about playing a new army and wanted to see how it feels, then we would allow a counts as army, but like you said, it has to be consistent.

+1.
At any rate, since I can't vote, I'll share my 2 cents anyway. At first, I played with WYSIWYG unpainted models, but only because I was anxious to play a few games, and not all of my stuff was painted yet. However, before my first tournament, I promised myself I'd get everything at least painted and based, and was up until about 1:00 am the night before finishing some models, and this has occurred every time with me before a tournament (Never a real tournament experience unless you're up past midnight the night before painting, isn't it... )
Now, since I've had less chances to play, I've had ample time to finish up my painting before using the models. Now I always use painted WYSIWYG (well, WYSIWYG 99.9% of the time. Sometimes I don't have a Dreadnought outfitted exactly how I like them, so I say it's armed with something else rather than what it has. Usually it's a Heavy Flamer.)

....Aaaaaaaaaaaaand you'd be wrong again.
In fact, when I go to places with public gaming areas, I see unpainted but assembled minis or partially painted armies FAR more often than I see completely painted armies. Always have, reagardless of where and when I gamed.
This is excluding most tournaments, mind you. I'm strictly referring to "open play" areas and tournaments that do not *require* fully painted armies.

Not true. In general, mini companies don't give a damn whether or not you paint your models, as long as you keep buying.
Again, in tourneys are different. Painted armies up the "cool factor." Overall, though, they don't care what you do with the models, provided you're buying them.
