I think you're mistaken about what Apocalypse actually is in the first place. Apocalypse is simply an expansion that adds strategic assets and does away with the FOC, creating a much looser gaming environment. Vanilla 40k can be played up to any points value you want. They say that you should play a minimum of 3000 points in Apocalypse, but it doesn't automatically become Apocalypse when you reach that limit, it's an agreed upon rules expansion.

Once you hit 2000 points in vanilla 40k, super heavy vehicles and gargantuan creatures are as allowable as anything else in 40k, though it's a dick move dropping one into a game without warning. Since nothing in IA says you require opponents permission (well, since the first book I think), you have just as much 'right' to not play someone using Hammernators as someone using FW units.

Add people wonder why I use the 50 cent Tribal Brutes from Mage Knight for the 15 Ogryns I need.

I was once allowed to pick up a Tau Manta at Forgeworld's Open Day to see how heavy it was. Such was my terror at holding something so valuable and delicate, I only got about 2" off the table. I can vouch it weighs a ton!

While everyone knows that metal models are expensive, I'm going for expensive plastic models. That honor (to my knowledge) goes to the Vanilla terminator box (either the tactical or assault variety). $50 for a box of 5. Base 200 points. I'd say thats the most expensive plastic infantry.

There was a Tau painting log on Warseer that had, IIRC, a Manta and a pair of Tigersharks in it. They were done via commision, and had some awsome nebula and constellation art airbrushed onto them.

Imperial Armour stuff is as legal as Codex stuff, and all those models have rules for allowing them in non-Apoc scale games of 40k. Granted, they're still super heavy or gargantuan and are taken as a separate detachment, and thus cannot be in games smaller than 2000 points, but they are quite legal outside of Apocalypse.

I believe this is the manta you are talking about.

Just as an additional to that image: that's not a Forgeworld Manta. The artist carved that out of high-density foam himself. That's why some of the panel lines (especially in the centre) and the edges of the wings look a little wobbly. Still amazing though!

I think the most expensive (money) per point is actually the Ork gretchin.
