I travel to different clinics and work on my models during lunchtime or between long stretches of seeing patients. So I have two kits I tend to carry with me. One fits inside the other:

$.99 plastic schoolbox with:
2 hemostats to hold tiny pieces
rare earth magnets (tiny but hella strong)
paperclips for pinning (which stick to the magnets)
1 sprue cutter
pin vice with various bits
popsicle sticks (or smaller craft sticks)
super glue
modeler's polystyrene glue with the needle spout
1 exacto knife with chunky blade
1/8 inch drill bit to make holes for my magnets
green stuff

The other bag is a lunchbox with rigid sides that I carry my models and paints in. So when I travel, I have my toolbox (plastic school supply box) that has my tools and my lunchbag with smaller fishing tackel boxes inside to carry the units I'll work on for the day. The toolbox fits snugly inside the lunchbox and it's all in one kit to go!

I also bought a pencil wallet from Hobby lobby's clearance section for $2 that had been marked down from $15. It has loops for pencils but I use it to keep my brushes inside so they don't get damaged.

You can also get generic "eye dropper bottles" from ebay to put your flow-aid, retarder, paints, any linquid you need and it becomes much easier to transport. Plus paints don't dry out as quick as they do in the GW paint pots!

Chowderhead's version. I use these for making washes and carrying my paints.

Oh, and instead of the Kicker, use baking soda. Much cheaper and easier.

Please cut out any non-specific entries.

Ie. Bits and bobs, as these are not official Tools and are usually a stand-in for another on the list. Eg. the flattened end of an old paintbrush has served as my preparation sculpting tool for 12 months... why? Because I cannot find one similar for under $20. However, as it is not named by its commercial/trade name on the list, I did not bring it up.

Google suppliers in your local area/country and you should be able to get about 36"/3"/100g separate tubes of the yellow and blue for approx AUD$30 or less.

This is a heck of alot less expensive than 6" for AUD$20 that GW charges.

When did GW halve the amount you got in the pack? Last time I got some it was TWO 6" strips (or 12" of it) in the pack.

'Course, I got 36" of it for $24AUD from another retailer (when GW was selling it for $15-16).

Car body work mesh sheets. Good for terrain effects (mesh fences, barbed wire) but I have also used it to make small cages/sieves to more easily strip models when using toxic chemicals.

Assorted sand/wet+dry/abrasive paper use on plastics and filled components. The usual stuff from the hardware store is good but also hobby related products like the Tamyia very fine paper are useful.

Two part epoxy resin for when super glue just isn't enough - really this its just for big models and important joints particularly on all metal models.

Old toothbrushes. Can use to simply scrub and clean minis but also weathering effects like mud splash and rusting.

Pins (as in needle work ones with heads) - vital for working with Foamcore sheets as you can temporarily pin things while the glue goes off.

Assorted fillers, you already have green stuff, but I also use quick and slow drying sand-able fillers.

Quick - Humbrol model filler
Slow - Various colours of milliput

Assorted solvents and thinners since even different paints in the same range will take to different thinners better (mostly airbrush related).

Distilled water.
Concentrated car window cleaner (you know the blue stuff you dilute and put in the car sprayers), cheap and usually works with everything.
Tamiya Thinner.
Vallejo airbrush thinner.
White spirit (for use with oils and weathering powders)
Revel colour medium - similar to white spirit, less smelly. I mostly use this for cleaning my airbrush (it really tears into acrylic paint) or to clean spills. If you are careful you can use it sparingly on a cotton bud to remove paint from minis where you have over painted or splashed it.

Cotton buds - just really useful (cue tips to the USers?)

Tubes of oil paint for weathering. A cheap £15 set will give you all you need for a life time.

Art pastels. When like me you are too cheap to buy weathering powders buy this. Its the same stuff (mostly) but in handy stick form, cheap as well.

Wooden lolly sticks/Coffee stirrers - for mixing paint/glue etc and for making fences.

Plastic cups - best stolen from the work water machine

Fine line pens for black lining

Florists wire - easy to use, very cheap copper wire
Piano wire - for when that pinned joint really needs to hold plus a hack saw that can cut hardened steel.

Cutting mat/work station/tray - don't cut or paint over a table top, the Mrs/Mum/Dad will not be impressed by gouges.

Stackable project boxes (I use "really useful" 4ltr trays) - being able to keep a project all together which you can then put away when done actually helps you concentrate on getting the job done. You can have 4 or 5 of these up on the shelf and when you are working on one there are no distracting projects sharing your work area. I'm a disorganised smuck and this really helps keep thins tidy and productive.

A pencil and pad - no project can not be made better by a little planning.

I have already removed 'Bits and bobs' from the list which you could have seen from the last post i made. As with toothpicks and such, if we remove them then how does that help new comers who haven't thought of the idea? Although i will amend the list by adding generic links to such items. I haven't used these paints so i couldn't possibly comment but this sounds... Something is beeping in my house and its driving me up the wall!!!... like a great idea! I will extend The Modbox to include things like wire and plasticard at a later date and im sure this will do the job perfectly!

The problem with your request is that you need to consider that everyone on Dakka CAN and SHOULD know how to use Google.

We also live in many different countries. I am from AUS while you are from UK. Also, I live in a different State from others in AUS and will have a different 'local' supplier. I am not providing every supplier worldwide, that is ridiculous for you to request this.

Also, Amazon is the closest you will get to a world-wide "generic" supplier.

Anyone who does not have access or cannot think of using "a piece of wire" or a "toothpick" or something similar to un-clog glue does not deserve to use them as they may injure themselves.

I am considering colour coding the list to show whether the items are 'basic,' 'needed,' 'technical' or 'necessary for world domination.' White, yellow, orange and red respectfully. What do you all think?

Since we are looking at tools does anyone want to suggest a hobby power tool for drilling.

I have a dremel like most but the minimum setting of 3000rpm is too much, it polishes metal and melts plastic when drilling. Their fine for grinding and cutting but the lack of control (and the associated danger) when drilling really does not appeal to me.

Don't get me wrong I is a real man and own a proper cordless drill (Hurrrrh!) that has variable control on the trigger. Can anyone suggest a similar hobby tool that is less clumbersome that the real thing?

Since I have brought up the subject of safety (sorry), so I will also add;

Dress properly (hard in the colonies I grant you) but a pair of jeans and shoes/slippers will usually stop a dropped knife from hurting you. There are always allot of stories about cutting legs on Dakka. Its also better to drop and glue covered model on to your trousers than your old chap/leg.

Gloves - various, whatever you can lay your hands on really. Check the hardware store they will have more types thjat you can imagine. (i'm lucky I can nick them from work )

So leather/kevlar for power tool and even knife use.
Latex for low grade chemical use or even to just keep paint off of your hands/finger prints from models
Rubber gloves for more potent chemicals although marigolds (washing up gloves) will do at a pinch.

Finally eyes are vital to life and indeed to enjoyment of this hobby so impact protective/safety glasses. If you use a dremel like me (foolishly like a pen and near to your face) then these are very important. Some of the attachements to hobby tools are rather brittle (cutting disks) or will send shardes of metal/plastic face-ward so best be careful. Better to look like a gakker than not be able to look at something full stop.

I think something like this is what you're looking for, since it's made for scale modellers. Mind you, I've never tried this.

Since I have brought up the subject of safety (sorry), so I will also add;

With your dremel, use this http://www.dremel.com/en-us/AttachmentsAndAccessories/Pages/AttachmentsDetail.aspx?pid=225-01 and this http://www.dremel.com/en-us/AttachmentsAndAccessories/Pages/AttachmentsDetail.aspx?pid=220-01

The one is the flex shaft, and the other is the workstation/drill press combo which makes the Dremel easier to manage and increases it's utility.

My Dremel allows me to dial down to low speed and rev up to 35,000. For really delicate pieces though, I go with a pin vise like this:

Cheers targetwag that seems just the ticket. I did laugh when i realised it was a kit though!

Spacemanvic, got the flexishaft, true it is an improvement in utility but it doesn't reduce the rpm which is were the dremel fails at drilling.

Having used a pinvice for drilling 50+ replacement metal heads recently I was looking for someting powered to spare my poor girlie work shy hands further pain.

Another one - [mini] hot glue gun - must have for terrain modelling.

My tool box includes several paint brushes (from dry brushes to super fine), GW plastic glue (soon not to use due to not being terribly good), super glue, industrial super glue with spray activator (used in the construction trade - no need for pinning with this stuff! Seriously strong and needs to real force to pull apart!), air brush and compressor, gren stuff with modelling tool, snips, files and the little hand held drilling thingy from GW!

I just wanted to add some thing about super glue. In my experience, brand isn't actually important, but every hobbist owes it to themselves to have 2 (possibly 3) kinds of superglue. I've given the BSI names below, but other brands make similar products.

1) A thick or "Gel" superglue (Maxi-Cure) for:
-gap filling
-joining of parts that aren't evenly matched.
2) A thin watery glue (insta-cure) for:
-Instant attachment of porus materials like balsa,
-surfaces that are well matched and need a close bond
-Strengthening of existing bonds. A truely thin superglue will be sucked into an existing crack by capilary action.
3)Optional: A ruberized (IC-2000) or flexible (Instaflex) super glue
-For gluing heavy metal models without pinning.
-For gluing models where shock absorbtion (usually heavy metal models) is a concern.

All 3 kinds of glue can be found from Bob Smith Industries. If you've never noticed BSI glue, it's because it's probably the brand in your model shop with the model shop's name stamped on it. Usually BSI glues are very reasonably priced. BSI ruberized glues are a bit less common in shops, but Gorilla rubberized glue is fairly widely available at hardware stores.
You can see all 3 kinds of glues here:
http://www.bsi-inc.com/Pages/hobby/ca.html

Sum up, glue type matters alot. Buying Loctite, Gorilla, BSI, or Krazy is no guarantee of good results unless you're buying the right tool for the job.

Sorry, but I'm not much of a paint Guru. I use mostly craft paint, Hardware store spray paints and matte sprays, and Minwax polyshades dip.
You can use this info or discard it depending on whether you want to make a "bargain paint box" section of the list.

Craft paint: Not as nice as miniature specific paint, but really cheap (a third the cost of Miniature paint for over 4 times as much) and more than good enough for mediocre painters like me. All brands brands will work ok, but Delta Ceramcoat seems to me to be the closest in quality to miniature paint and the best craft brand in terms of coverage, flow and pigment. Available at any Hobby Lobby, JoAnnes, Michaels, or other craft shop in the USA.

Spray paints:
Black and white undercoats: Whatever proprietary brand of spray paint the hardware carries, usually around a buck a can.
Colored undercoats: Grey or ruddy brown primers ( http://www.krylon.com/products/indooroutdoor_primer/ ) or camo paints are usually around 4 bucks a can from brands like Krylon and Rustoelum and they are big cans. Krylon Camo now comes in about 6 different "ultra flat" colors ( http://www.krylon.com/products/camouflage_paint_with_fusion_technology/ ). Whatever brand you go with, make sure it's flat, ultra-flat or semi-flat finish. Satin finish spray paints may be tempting for easy basecoat coverage and they work ok for terrain, but they don't provide enough "tooth" for detail painting on figures.

Dips:
The following Minwax Polyshades satin colors compare well to army painter quickshade colors , and are 4-8 bucks rather than 25 for the same size can!
Pecan - Soft Tone
Antique Walnut - Strong Tone
Tudor - Dark Tone

Fantastic write up pal! I won't be adding a bargain section for painting at the moment but i may well do in future.

For now please feel free to stick around and impart your wisdom on us simple folk!

I award you a medal for being 'The Toolbox Oracle!' I will add to the first post shortly. Well done!
