WoW was the worst hands down for me. Holy christ it was almost impossible to get into a que up that didnt suck donkey-cave. The worst, was the leader of a raid I was in was some YOUNG teen shaman and all he kept doing was bragging how EPIC he was and called everyone brother. I swear to god I thought I was playing with Hulk Hogan. Worst part was, he TOTALLY sucked, and qued as a healer, which sucked even harder.

Once in awhile Ill get into a bad server on TF2, but usually its not bad.

WoW by far. Way too many epeen stroking elitists.

I’ve personally never experienced a gaming community full of such bile in any of the other MMOs I’ve played (Guild Wars, DDO, LOTRO).

Due to the way WoW was designed, too many people get caught up with stuff such as epic gear and being l33t, forgetting that WoW is just a game and as a result the community is somewhat poisoned.

Aye, the fact i'm in a casual guild that doesn't race to raiding, seriously we where happily finishing off Uldaur while the main guilds where killing the Lich King.
Plus is made up of a large group of adults with an average age of thirty and several couples probably gives me a much rosier view of WoW.

Fixed for you.

Seriously though the Wow community isnt that bad, yes there is the odd que that has the "I am elite and yous suxors" cigarette but there is a way to deal with them, its called "kick" but i suppose it depends on other factors as to whether you kick them or not such as whether they are the tank or not, whether they actually suck or are good and how often he actually insults yous for "sucking".

Ill agree that the COD community is pretty bad, its a game for over 18s, why is there 16 8 year olds in this one lobby?

Easiest solution to this is to not have a mic in and use party chat if playin with friends, or mute them

Most CoD and Halo players came to mind when I saw this topic. Because, if they happen to see or hear a single word or reference to CoD (For Halo players) or Halo (For CoD players) there is a 200% chance of a flame war breaking out.

Which further relies on them being able to be kicked ("You cannot kick this player for another XX minutes." "Oh joy -.-"), not being in the same guild as the majority of the group, and being in a group that doesn't suck overall. Kicking was okay, but in its current form, it doesn't do much, but if it was made so you could kick anyone at any point, it'd be abused.

Every que I had outside guild groups was terrible; raids became class-raids, so my fury warrior never made it into any non-guild raids because DKs took up all the melee DPS, and my SPriest had to compete for a single spot with others who had a greater item level but couldn't DPS for crap.

There was also the fact that people can't take you being above them on any DPS meter. If my warrior went above, i'd be rage-kicked, but if I fell behind at any point, i'd also be kicked for slacking. Then there's saving the group and getting kicked for it, such as my SPriest having to off-heal because the tank couldn't keep aggro, the healer was mana inefficient/couldn't prioritise/lazy/lagging/plain bad, or the DPS went around pulling everything in sight and not caring about their aggro.

If my priest left shadowform and started to heal, the healer would shout at me, the rest of the group would shout at me for not doing any DPS, and i'd get shouted at for not placing a lightwell (for those of you unfamiliar with WoW priests, lightwells are are healing object that people rarely click because they're lazy, but are only available to Holy Priests). After the fight, i'd have barely saved the group from wiping before I find myself back in SW with a nice "You have been removed from the group." message in my chat box.

The new ZG/ZA raids were also frustrating. People lost the ability to understand English "Stand on the chain... on the chain... ON THE CHAIN! ON THE FREAKING CHAIN! NO DON'T STAND IN THAT YOU'LL... die..." "OMFG HEALER Y U LET ME DIE!!!???" "It's a one-shot ki-" "You have been removed from the group." You can be the only one who has a clue what you're doing, and you'll be kicked because of it. All that work you did carrying the group through the other bosses for your Valor Points was wasted.

The pure stupidity of dungeon groups is a large reason why I cancelled my subscription last week, with the fact that no raiding guild wants a Fury/Arms Warrior or a Shadow Priest being the other part. I gave up on my retri paladin after the cataclysm intro patch buggered them sideways (having played since TBC, I was sick and tired of blizz not being able to balance retri, and simply flitting between UP and OP with every patch), with the fact that insane RNG luck still allowed them be competative being probably the only reason Blizz left them alone after it. "Class?" "Paladin." "Tank or Healer?" "...DPS." "Lulwat? Paladins don't have a DPS tree." I distinctly remember when both Protection pallies and Holy pallies did more DPS than a Retri pally -.-

WOW - played for the month-long trial. Got fed up with it in a week for the gacky players who try and nurse their ego.

Played EQ, got a bunch of levels in the same time it took me to get one level in WOW, and the playerbase is so much more fun, less about elitism, and more about fun. Even the GM;s run low level events.

Counterstrike is harsh, I've had people accuse me of cheating when I snipe them from over the map.

The majority of arma 2, though there is an AWESOME minority whom love the game for what it is, a simulator.

Warhammer online. Ugh, thats such a gacky community now. Nobody teams up anymore....just annoying to try and get a public quest done.

Gonna have to agree with the HoN community, it's terrible. The LoL community fluctuates, it has pretty awesome people. Last night, I played a game where we had a massive teamfight, I got a triple kill, and shouted WAAAAAAAAGH in allchat. The enemy proceeded to say that you can't declare a WAAGH on Turn 1, and another said move D6 inches. It kind of made my day. Now, if only I could find out how to access the screenshots....

As far as being absolute pricks, L4D has been the worst. Back when I bothered trying to play with strangers, I'd 9/10 be kicked straight after joining. If you don't want a public game, set the bloody thing to private. And then there are egomaniacs who kick team mates for not following their orders, or not performing at some sort of pro gamer standard. Needless to say, I only play with friends now.

More recently, I've played a lot of multiplayer Mount & Blade, and I've been exposed to the sort of racist and homophobic remarks that take even myself back. And I'm not generally an easy guy to offend. It's a bitter contrast to the the old days of Beta, when M&B fans were largely adults, history/war enthusiasts and aspiring modders.

Dude that is awesome! now if only i could get LoL to work

My picks are The D2 community (half the time), halo, CoD, WoW.... well it was not that bad but then again i mostly kept to myself and my hunters pet, Runescape was craptasticaly horrendous to the point where i had to change my players name (i was way to generous with helping new people get started, every low lvl player and there damn cat would beg me for gold n loot) the name change did nothing so i quit all together.

Demons Souls is the best so far

Dont you think its a bit foolish to turn away from what was one of the favourite game series of all time just because some dude on chat annoyed you? Generally I find Halo to have an extremely friendly player base, but the point is, community on xbox doesnt really exist. Other than randoms you get matched up with and people on your friends list, match making destroys community.

Something like that. I never even mentioned anything, was just trying to play, but pretty much every game some worthless trash masquerading as a human being saw my name and decided to make some dirtbag comment about kitchens or some other sexist nonsense.

And then there's the forums, where it's even WORSE.

Pokemon... heh. I didn't realize how obnoxiously aggressive some of these guys are. I'm talking 250 win streaks in the battle tower, 287-1 battle ratios.... Ugh.

Haha pretty much the same thing happened in HoN a couple weeks ago, do you play it as well? Although the person did it over voice chat in the game not all chat.

Anyways back on topic (HoN is a better game than LoL... whoops), all games that are played with multiple people on the internet suffer from this problem. The internet hate machine affects all the games played on it regardless. Only games with Dedicated Servers can mitagate this problem (like CS:S and most other shooters) by kicking/banning people they don't like forever.

On a side note I actually enjoy the competitive nature that people here seem to be complaing about. I play games for a challenge and enjoy the struggle to win in all its forms. Which means psycologically breaking your opponent is a valid tactic in all its forms in any game that allows you to some how communicate with others. Otherwise, the game makers should remove the communication methods and it would no longer be a system in the game used by the player in an attempt to win. It's like playing cards, but then telling someone that only certain cards are valid this time around because you can't handle the added stress of dealing with four different suits or ignoring the ability of a pawn to capture a passing bishop on the diagonal in chess. It's a rule/system in the game and can therefor be used to help you defeat and overcome challenges/opponents.

The worest boo-hoo situation I have come across so far is from the CAL CS:S seasons I used to play in. On of their rules forbids typing in All Chat to the other team, unless by the team leader and only to setup the required screenshots and other setup tasks needed during each game. That means no poking fun at the other team, or using tricks like saying "A site" in the chat like it was a mistake to bluff the other team into thinking you are going there, etc. Its just dumb to restrict a valid tactic that the game designers wrote into the game. If they didn't want you talking to the other team they would garble your messages like the do in WoW when talking between factions.

I think seeing basic communication as a weapon rather than a a simple way to, well talk, to people and be pleasant is the kind of competitive douche-baggery most people get annoyed with.

(Friendly) competition is fun, but I wouldn't play a game to be harassed, when a game stops being fun it has failed as a game.

Strimen: There's a difference between being competitive and being a worthless piece of sexist trash. I have no problem with being competitive, hell, I was very competitive in TF2, even making it into the top fifty (something like 42 or other) in that game as spy. But being a racist and/or sexist douchebag is crossing the line into bad sportsmanship, and if you rely on that as a tactic, I have no respect for you as a human being, nevermind as a gamer. That kind of person is lower than snail-gak as far as gamers go.

I know I'm being harsh here, but seriously, there's competitive, and then there's just being a donkey cave. You don't need to scare noobs off by just being a total fether to them just for the sake of doing it. It only makes the community worse, and provides for fewer opponents for you to face, which is boring.

Halo never seemed too bad to me, although I rarely have my mic plugged in unless I'm playing with friends. Its also easy enough to mute someone... there are quite a few kids that like to talk a lot though (or scream). They usually aren't downright mean though.

WoW... man, I have known some elitist donkey-caves in that game for sure. Definitely can be a awful community to be a part of, finding a decent guild can be difficult. There is always a ton of drama in every guild I've managed to be a part of, and there are always a few awful people.

Some people tend to confuse someone being mean with someone wanting to be competitive. If you are awful, you are going to get gak-talked, no matter what. I've gak-talked horrible players before, because I actually wanted to finish what we were doing. However, there is a line between being competitive and being a complete jerk.

I'm still trying to figure out if you are attacking me here or just directing this to me for conversation. But seeing as you are female I can understand your seeming insecurities when playing online with others as I am sure you get targeted by anonomous douchebags all the time simply because of that. Not to mention the fact that if your gaming apptitude is average at best, then you will attract even more of their attacks and other males will generally pile on with their own remarks or try to defend you in an attempt to attract your attention. Which I imagine can be just as annoying and devolve the entire game you are playing into a male teenage angst shouting match where they each pull out their e-penis and start fencing one another verbally instead of focusing on the game.

In either light, I never said that I encourage people to run a round screaming racist/sexist comments at each other for no reason or joining a game simply to get their verbal diarrhea expelled from their system for the day. What I said was:

1 - That due to the internets anonymity and humanities compulsive urge to be the most badass/powerful/awesomest/smartest/coolest/etc person in a given area, any multiplayer gaming community (or any internet community actually) will seem hostile/bad as the people competing for the imaginary goal will be the most visible in that community.
2 - I disagree with most peoples opinions of a community being hostile simply because the community memebers are enjoying the competitive nature of the game and using the features implemented to express it and the lay of the land from the competitive point of view. Clearly if you have an issue with this (and not just the general douchebaggery that is given to occur because you are on the internet with anonomous humans) then the game/game mode is not right for you and you should perhaps look for a non-competitive, non-team based game to play or only play the game with friends (which still doesn't gaurentee that people will attempt to win and beat you, which makes you sad).

However, due to the rise in video games as a valid entertainment source among the newer generations and older non-gamer generations many users aren't actually in the game to play it or compete in it. They are there for the sheer social aspect of it, which I find detracts from the original intention of most games and is devolving the game industry into mass market pandering joke of an industry. WoW is effectively a glorified chat channel now a days. Almost all elements of skill are being removed from the majority of the AAA games hitting shelves these days. Difficulty levels are being implemented in attempt to not offend the masses of noobs (much like Starbucks changes the "small" $5 coffeee to be named "tall" so that you don't feel bad about having your money stolen to feel cultured) where "hard" actually means "normal", and "normal" means "easy", and "easy" means "for one armed children or people older then the gaming industry itself that have still never played a game before". Which of course means they have to create more "Impossible" modes which are equal in difficulty to NES and SNES titles which didn't even have difficulties (also known as a challenge).

One of the problem with pandering to the masses however, is exactly what you are all talking about. The influx of uneducated and douchebag players as well as people who have no skill and therefor get upset about it and "Rage Quit" or greif as much as possible to get back at people who are more skilled then them in a given game. And ofcourse because the developers/publishers are pandering their games to these people they end up in the multiplayer mode of those same games and find out that the developers/publishers can't code the game to hand hold them, cheat for them, or force the other players to allow the noobs to win (where as an AI would/does in most single player/co-op games now a days).

So basically the publishers/developers are:
1 - generally encouraging everyone and anyone to play games with very little barrier to enter.
2 - leading lambs to the slaughter causing rage quitting and other obnoxious behaviour and QQ'ing.
3 - setting up their multiplayer communities to be crap by not providing proper dedicated server/admin supports (thanks online console generation. XBox Live -> Halo,CoD,GoW, etc...)
4 - creating online game play without any kind of proper stratifing skill system. (Mixes newbs with pros with casuals with hardcores and watches the destruction and does nothing about it. I.E. Either froce global ranking systems in your games or provide filters/zones for players of each skill level to go to and play as well as at the minimum have a voting system for others to promote/demote peers to other categories.

These are just some of the issues that cause the "hostile" communities this thread is talking about. But the main factor is still the fact that people are anonomous and feel empowered by it which feeds our human nature and causes these issues to occur everytime.

Heh, thats interesting. I find it rather tame compared to most. I don't see the wide spread fanboi fights that plague other sites, nor the horrible waste of space caused by the phishing scam/spammers you find on comment boards at the big "game sites", or any of the rage directed specifically at XXX guy from XXX company for lies to the community.
