Why do I get the feeling people who send their kids there think they are being good parents.

I agree with trying to teach kids (not this extreme though) but unless it's clear the parents are doing their best too, they should get the same treatment.

If you have kids it your job to teach them- not beat it into them once you've already taught them doing what ever they want is ok.

I am quite suprised they manage to get them onto a plane while captive.

If your going to leave your kid somewhere like this for something as simple as being a lesbian then you not only don't deserve to have children, you deserve to be the one locked up there. What kind of worthless homophobic bigoted incompetant useless freak would do that kind of thing?

Then again I honestly can't say I'm surprised this sort of thing would be happening. I don't know for sure as I've never been there and don't know much about it but by the sound of it most of Utah, and some other places in America are more backwards than practically anywhere else in the Western world

Because this is just a hate crime against LGBT children and child abuse rolled into one, by the people running these places, who work in these places and the parents who sent their children there.

There are close to a THOUSAND places just like this all over the USA, with 20-50,000 children and teens locked up in such places.

The GAO has reported to congress over this TWICE and it got, at most, lukewarm coverage by the media. The GAO does not know for sure how many such places exist, but the fact that no statistics are taken and that there is zero accountability for how kids are treated in these places is both terrifying and infuriating.

The GAO went into detail about how people will sell this "treatment" to kids with any problem, even those made up by the people selling the 'program' to the parent - such as how a whole grain diet makes asperger's go away!

Why can't the USA just agree to 'The Convention on the Rights of the Child', aside from Somalia their the only country in the world left that hasn't signed, and their law is based on Shari'a law

I didn't imply that it was. If this facility existed in Wales and Australian kids were being sent there, I still think it would be difficult for a kid (after going though that treatment) to make their way back to Aus.

As a US citizen you would simply call the embassy for help.

It would be a little hard to locate that embassy though, and I don't know if a ferry is needed to get off that particular island, or how one would go about finding the embassy at all, let alone being able to get there without funds.

I'm going off the assumption that, at 18, they've been let loose after years of this degradation and now have no support from either the facility or the parents. It's not a great starting point from anyone's point of view.

Strangely enough, parents are supposed to teach their children how to behave (I know, it's madness!), if they need a parenting camp to do it for them then they're not fit to be a parent.

Obviously if you're doing everything right and your kid is still a little gakfether, then something might be required to help you, but shoving your kid in there at the first sign of disobedience is bullgak.

I've found you can raise your kids as best as you can and they still turn out like absolute crap.

Neighbor. She raised her boy as well as she could then she died. Said boy thereafter, at te ripe old age of 15 knocked up a girl and is now a shining example to my rugrats of what not to do. Neighbor across the street. CFO. Married woman and adopted her kid. Both tried to raise the kid well. Kid knocked up a girl at a party and is an abject loser. We call him the neighborhood white trash contingent. Its particularly sad because until he hit late teenager he was a good kid.
