Poll
Why are lots of people now GK players?
Because lots of people always change to the newest army
Because lots of people like the fluff
Because people think they are indestructible.
I dunno...
Because GW is overrating them
Because people like the idea of the Grey Knights

I figure it's just bandwagon jumping onto an army that needed love for a long time. Doesn't hurt that the book has some powerful options in it.

Should be a "because they look really cool and have awesome detail in their models"... that's why both of our local GK players took them on (one last edition, one this edition)

As a dedicated Inquisitorial player, I can say that we could have done without the 'love'. The two GK players in my group agree...

It amazes me that the notion that codex X = auto win still persists.

Don't worry about the haters. you can join them when 'Crons, SoB and Tau come out again or just smile sadly at them. In their insane minds your tiny polystyrene minis are somehow better than theirs.

1. They have an excellent new Codex. Good rules, different play and not whacked-off unbalanced like IG/Space Wolves

2. They have cool new models. People dig Terminators. Dreadknight is shiny. Stormraven (in my humble opinion) the best GW "Flyer" out yet (and no, Darwing-Duck Razorwing doesn't even come close.. not in a million years)

3. They are a "perfect" second army. A few high-point troops via plastic boxes. Henchmen are a dream to re-utilize your bits-box. Why not?

4. In, again, my humble opinion, good fluff; maybe not necessarly in how it was written, but more generally for what it is. People just like best of the best, most secret of the secret. Also, things the Sigillite and stuff ties in to the immensely popular HH-series, etc.. . Lots of draws. We all know its the "in-thing" for the Internet-Connoisseurs around here to hype Kelly's Decapitator-wielding-Decapitator brilliance, but I think his fluff literally just doesn't, in the most direct sense of things, connect to much else in the fluff.

Matt Ward's fluff doesn't, in the most direct sense of things, connect to much of reality or common sense.

Maybe. But neither reality or common sense are things one looks for in a full-frontal escapist hobby like 40K

That's because it has deep-sea scuba wolves, frat-brat Blood Claws going on Thunderhawk joyride-cruises, giant Cyber-wolves that aint Wolves but serve as horses for the wolf-claw-wielding Wolf-Marines wit wolf-names. It's this kind of Kelly-fluff, oh so deeply grounded in common sense and reality, that apparently makes all the difference.

Hyperbole? Interesting. I wouldn't call what I said 'hyperbole'. Hyperbole would imply high or even absurd levels of exaggeration, and one cannot exaggerate things without there being an element of truth to it (otherwise what are you exaggerating?). So either you consider that there is some element of truth to what I say when I say Ward's writing has no connection to common sense... or it was a lame attempt at a personal attack on your part; the proverbial 'to the man', as it were.

You choose.

Yup. Because that post was 100% Serious Business, and not at all funny.

I think Canis Wolfborn (and the entire concept of Thunderwolf Cavalry) is one of the most absurd things to come out of GW in quite some time, but every page of the Grey Knight Codex makes the Thunderwolves look like Ultramarines with Bolters.

Which "reality" of a fictional universe do yo uwant him to have connection to?

Bearing in mind how inconstent this "reality" is, when you look back over it....

And again with the hyperbole. It really isnt "every page turn" now, is it.

Compared to the trite, uninspired drivel of the Space Wolf Codex, the Grey Knight book feels like reading a young, hungry Hemmingway born again. Same goes for Dark Eldar btw. It's the pinnacle of expositonary writing. "Vect is the most intelligent Dark Eldar of them all". Great! Thanks for telling us Kelly. Back to reading books where things actually happen.

I love it how people deny the truth of canon books published by the company that created the universe in which they're creating fluff. How can anything they do be "wrong" to the universe?

Mutated Chosen Chaos Marine

When the fluff contradicts the fluff:

3rd edition Chaos: The Isstvan 5 dropsite massacre occurred when the World Eaters, Emperor's Children and Death Guard gunned down the Salamanders, Raven Guard and Iron Hands after the three Loyalist Legions failed to beat the Sons of Horus.

4th edition Chaos: The Isstvan 5 dropsite massacre occurred when the Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors, Night Lords and Word Bearers gunned down the Salamanders, Raven Guard and Iron Hands after the three Loyalist Legions failed to beat the Sons of Horus, Emperor's Children, World Eaters and Death Guard. Which sounds a lot better for the Imperial side.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

It's not hard to figure out. The army has amazing models with a relatively simple color scheme, and is low model count.

For $400 and a few weeks of painting, you can have a great 1850 GK army up and running.

while abrasive, he made a solid point. GKs aren't even the most durable army out there. Deathwing (post errata) are more durable, and many armies are roughly as durable (loganwing, nob bikerz).

A lack of stormshields makes them vunlerable to 2+ shooting, and the power armored GKs are just MEQs.
