It's a mechanic to be used at players discresion to explain why they chose the rules and characters / style of fighting... at leas tthats what i read into it (reading the SM codex atm actually, I'm more an ork player but when i saw that part i though hey cool fill in the blanks and it doesn't say why they are gone... if they are lsot then legion of the damned makes sense, lost in the warpm, guided by the big E where they are most needed, btu also thier geneseed might be lost but still out there somewhere with some lost human worlds cut off from the rest due to shifting difrts in the warp maybe... who knows. cool stuff though imo

add

or maybe that's jusrt the ork im me showing through wanting to make everythign different and not have my marines army look like alll th eother power armor dudes out there

The funny thing is that my part in quotes is a paraphrase from the various times GW's addressed it. They want us to think that they did something worse then the Heresy.

I, in no way, disagreed with your point.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

'Games Workshop did it to spark creativity among SM players! blah blah blah'

I'm going to repeat myself:

That worked until the HH books were released. We now know that both legions fate were sealed long before the Heresy. And it seems their fates were a finite event. Meaning there really isn't any wiggle room at all.

Legion of the Damned blah blah blah

You realize there is established background for the LotD now right? They are not pre-heresy SM. They are most probably Fire Hawks. So if you are trying to apply the same logic to what happened to the 'Lost Legion' it doesn't really work because the Fire Hawks didn't disappear into the warp and come back normal. So even if someone played that card, their 'Lost Legion' guys would probably be pretty jacked up after 10,000 years in the warp. If they weren't mutated they would most likely be insane at the very least.

Sounds like a Chapter the Imperium would want to make, if you ask me. Just because of the "aquila"
