Like Chapterhouse was saying 3D printing often leaves a "stair step" effect, which needs to be manually fixed. Also its basically powder stuck togeather, so even after things you get rapid prototype'd are finished, they are not as strong as resin or plastic models.

The stairstep problem is mostly for rounded and curved surfaces on small objects. At a distance it looks sort of grainy sometimes.

That said, some people have made very nice models with 3d Printing, though most print a single master, which they then have a sculptor clean up and produce molds using the item. I believe this is how Spartan Games produces their new Dystopian Wars stuff.

Anywho, its a really cool technology, and while I don't know if shapeways has figured out a way to overcome the problems associated with it. And again if you cast stuff, rapid prototyping is great for getting you 90% of the way done with a model, and you just fix it up, smooth it out and cast a crap ton of copies.

Just my 2c on the subject.

At .2mm the stair stepping is almost not noticeable and at .1mm of Ultra Detail material there is no stair stepping, but I've seen the effects before a couple years ago when I was doing tests, especially at .5mm and up.

Shapeways also now offers to polish models that use the powder like material, which is default for products using this material.

Thanks

I recently did a 3D shoulder pad for a customer, which should help his army stand out quite a bit. Enjoy!

Thats what DreamForge Games does as well. CAD render, 3d print, lots of sanding/smoothing, mold, cast.

I just finished assembling one of his Leviathan Crusader models. I can only imagine the amount of finish smoothing that went into the master. I give him major credit for an awesome kit. If I was much more wealthy Id buy another and send it to a professional for building and painting. In the right hands the Leviathan kits have potential for unrivaled magnificence.

I'm curious how those 3D Jester caps are going to look when fully printed. Anyone can design a shoulderpad in zBrush. However, the printing may be a problem with all those fragile extension outcroppings.

Also, not to feed your competitor Chapterhouse's concern, but we still haven't seen an actual photograph yet.

If it looks great, you have me as a customer.

the above Has a high detail resin that seems to take care of much clean up work and shapeways has a transparent resin that cost more ( to the point you get one done and metal cast) but is decent if you are not a perfectionist -- Still has lines but with paint doesnt show unless you look close

These are a friends and not going into any sort of production by me - he sent these photos as an example of what shapeways can offer as I have been looking for a new material to cut down on clean up work -- There are currently many GW add on companies out there and some are doing it well for me to even attempt it. I remember when Green stuff became readily available to hobbyist -- it changed the industry overnight and now the availability of the 3d printer is doing the same --

Sounds similar to rhe experience I had when ordering a certain hull extension kit from a particular online store....

For my rogue trooper statue I had the gun and helmet Viper SLA printed, which was the top technology then (2008). When I got the parts out I didn't think the stepping would show up but a coat of primer proved me wrong. Just recently me and Ed visited a company that has a Perfactory system which is the current top technology (GW has 2 in house to do their printing on). I had a real close look at their bits on display (this was in the machine room), while there was a noticeable difference between the finish now and then, there was still slight stepping visible in places. Ultimately it comes down to how much of a perfectionist you are or how good your eyes are.

No worries, I completely understand. Page 1 has photos of the first round of shoulder pads that were printed up. The white material is at .2mm and has a very very slight stepping, while the clear yellow material has a detail level of .1mm and barely any stepping noticeable. Both are definantly not noticeable for table top viewing while Golden Daemon painters might not think it's perfect, but then GW and FW (and others) isn't perfect either

As soon as I get the new set of pads in I'll have some pictures taken, and then have them painted up and take some pictures. I'm hoping to find a better lighting setup to help take better photos, but white and clear materials are pretty hard to capture clearly.

That happens to the best of us, I heard Privateer Press was a couple months behind on there goods and halted new production to do the back flow. Then the GW metal to resin sure did put some things behind on stuff I ordered.

From discussions I've had with Shapeways recently, they had a very large surge in demand recently, and have purchased more machines and changed their pricing structure to meet demand so hopefully that will help things out.

Hello everyone,

The pads look excellent. Is that pitting on the inset part or just a trick of the translucent material.

The mini is impressive, but a bit hit and miss in terms of texture.

Have to agree on the mini. Looks a bit grainy in parts. Maybe a black wash on those and the shoulder pads will help some of the details stand out.

Nice, those are Shapeways stuff? how durable does it seem? I was looking at a set of minis on their website similar to Terran marines, but am bit concerned about the "flexible" part of the material description. I dont want something soft like the green toy army men.

These look good to me... They can't be worse than the 40 metal ultramarine pads I got from GW. Between miscasts, rounding on metal detail, and tags needing to be cleaned, I only got about 30 usable pads out of the 40.

While I just finished up my 45 lootas with these pads, I would have loved to have gotten orky pads like this. I think they show promise.

Nice shoulder pads. I'm glad someone can take up the slack when certain parent companies are too busy to give us what we want. I'm curious on pricing, for shoulderpads now. How much would it be for 10, 20, 50, or 100 pieces of the same shoulder. If it varies by design, then quote for something easy like a tactical or assault arrow design. Ballpark estimates, I realize nothing is set in stone.

Prices are normally set in stone for the Ultra Quality for 20 you pay $7 less than a SM tactical squad.

Shileds are the same $3 for 1 and $40 for 10 but the 10 is Ultra quality.

The normal wreath, squad marking pads are $1.25 each. waiting for him to make sets of 20. . . .

He is a great worker. he gets stuff done quickly and he is very professionsal. He will soon have dual arm claws and fists, as well as left and right bionics the arms will be posable.

Commisions are cheapish but worth it because once they are commisioned everyone can order them and you will get them for that price for life.

Got a new set of stuff in yesterday, just wanted to share some of it with you guys.

The first 3D pad, a 3D Jester Skull, and the first Character done, a Female Character carrying a sword.

I'll be painting some stuff up over the weekend to show some of the other things done, and provide some better pictures other then the clear material.

Enjoy!
