Much love for the spinner....

But seriously, I think it is absolutely awesome, and the best thing that's happened to WHFB for quite a while. I have a feeling it will turn many 40K players over to WHFB, I've already seen a few pick it up due to this expansion, there were 4 (iirc) WHFB first-timers in our store at the weekend, and the staff had to run a learn-the-rules-game as well as the big Storm of Magic Game.

I think the background is superb, as is the idea of it. A lot of the rules/ideas of the expansion are so simple yet so effective. Like the presence, equilibrium and dominance idea. It's simple but it works so well and has a big impact on the game. The fact that you can destroy entire regiments with ease using magic is very cool, and some spells, such as the one where you can move impassable terrain, are very fun to use.

Finally, I'd like to say some of the models associated with it are brilliant. I myself have bought a Black Dragon, and have assembled and painted it and I'm very impressed. I've also had a look at the other kit sprues and like the look of them too. I'll be adding a Chimera to my shopping list soon. Of course, not all the models are great, the main upset are the things like the cold ones. £10 for a single model that should really be fielded in units of 10, if not more? No. Needless to say, though, that is a small whine in a loud crowd of cheers.

Good job, GW.

I had a similar thought of buying the limited edition magic dice, you know the ones with a different colour for each lore, roll he dice and the highest is the ascending lore (re-roll or discard doubles maybe?) will have to nab some dice quick!

I think the dice are a waste of money personally.

But anyway I think the expansion is really good. The spells are great fun to cast and the rules are easy to learn and make for some really great, fun games. There's also a wide variety of new tactics to consider, which is always fun

Oh and you can destroy entire regiments with a single spell. What's not to like?!

My local GW told me that a some of the spinners have been spinning badly due to the books being on the bottom of the pile of the (quite heavy) SoM books. Apparently they spin fine after being left over night without the pressure on it.
Personally mine spins pefectly.

Model wise, I've only bought the Necromancer so far.

This is a step up from their previous plastic characters they did back in the day, and definitely in a pose they couldn't even attempt with metal, with a big, sweeping cloak.

Very, very nice model when put together, but no way at all to alter the pose due to how it is built. It's a lot like the corpse cart driver, with the arms actually being also the back of the entire model.

I love SoM. I was immediately impressed by the balance that I was not expecting to find. Sure the spell are powerful, but to be honest, they are not that much worse than the super spells that already come in the normal rule book. They didn't add just more Pit of Shades or Purple Nurple Suns of uber game breaking-ness. And since everyone is special, no one is. For example, in my game I just played. I had VC versus Skaven. The Skaven had lots of monster, I had a pact with Daemons.

His fire dragon dropped on my unit with my lord in it. And I was all like OMG! CRYSTAL MAZE! HAHAHA! Then he Dreaded 13th spelled my lord away. I was sad :(

BTW, PINK Horrors terrible. Flamers are awsome!

Personally may favourite thing for SOM, if you dont fancy having all the rules involved, you can pick any of them and they are still brillant alone say you are sick of the UBER magic, but your opponent still wants to pla, Barter with, well how about we still use the new monsters?

also i love how this new book is basically a dogs of war book if neccecery

I am happy at first glance but will have a more detailed outlook by tomorrow after reading the book cover to cover.

there are a couple of spells you know.. only 2 cards in the deck are usefull for woodies tho..... - just so people know - ive managed to get a few of the templates b4 they sold out and ive put them on ebay ending this sat/sun if you want any of them.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370527657383&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

Well I have now had two games of Storm of Magic, all I can say it is great fun, doubt it would appeal to the competitive WAAC people out there due to all the randomness etc but it really is blast, my first game was my woodies v lizardmen, got the win after the Slann blew himself up on his Fulcrum leaving my weaver to claim the winning fulcrum despite being turned into a frog other highlights included a skink priest winning a combat against my Griffin and running of woods due to me summoning them so that they almost covered the board.

second game was a mega battle 8000pts a side, highlight being my 8 Dryads holding up an Emperor Dragon after only losing the combat re by 1, next tun Dragon flew home after being unbound,

I would suggest anyone who has doubts, play a couple of games, the spells are not overpowered or unbalanced and the monsters are great to game with

I never saw these when they were on GW site, but how the hell did they sell out at those prices? Some people have no sense!

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

The games ive played so far have been pretty good. Although there are still turns in which the magic phase passes with no effect what so ever. I find this hard to believe when the entire focus of this expansion is boosting magic. I still find it a bit hit or miss, much less than the standard game. But still in game that may only last 4 turns (due to time constraints or agreed time limit) an entire turn of ineffective magic is a big hit. Also although changing the focus of the battle to caputuring objectives is a good change of pace i dont know if its something that i would want to do for every game. I think i would rather play a pitched battle or a good scenario. And last but not least i realy would like to know why there are no bindable minataurs in the book, ive got a unit of 9 old school metals just waiting for a excuse to paint them. They also left out ogre's im guessing due to these being the main race in an army book but they are another great (imho) monster unit. Over all its been pretty good, im guessing that within a few months we will be adding or modifying the rules and maybe removing the magic stuff and just useing the items monsters and pacts

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....... interesting. I would love to watch or even play a game of this. No one around here seems to like the sound of the bigger magic spells and needing to get more models, even though the monsters are cool. But I'd love to see it. I glanced through the book today and it looks well laid out.

Played our first game this week

Dwarves vs my Dark Elves 2000 pts plus 500 pts of Cool SOM stuff"

More like a Storm of Miscasts - lost Morarthi to normal miscast turn 2 plus a sorceress whilst Dwarf player lost a Runesmith and Fulcrum. A turn later lost another Sorceress when another fulcrum exploded!

It was reasonably fun but with all my mages exploded or being sucked into the warp cast very very little... :(

Interesting things we noticed:

RAW a wizard can cast major spells off a fulcrum if he/she has mages on the fulcrims to get the presence etc.
Ie my level 4 could cast the big spells whilst her level ones stayed on the fulcrum
The Floating Towers artefact is awesome especially for missile units like thunderers
Dwarf rune spells were immesely useful for him but very likely to miscast.
The Black Coach gets powerful very quickly.

I AM A MARINE PLAYER

During each magic phase, after you determine how many powerdice you have, you roll them all. For each 6 rolled a powerdice is eaten by the coach and it gets benefits for how many are eaten over the course of the game. Something like:

1-Scythed Wheels
2-Hatred
3-Impacts hits and all attacks have Killing Blow
4-MR(3)
5-Fly
6+-Ethereal

EDIT: I remembered #4.

Ohhh, that can get nasty quickly in a storm of magic game where the average is 14, thats sweet actually, considering i can take it as a pact. Oh and for my benifit, when you miscast and it turns all wizards into frogs, does this include runesmiths and runelords? thanks.

YES!* There is a bullet point that stats that Runesmiths and Runelords count as wizards for the Fulcrum Miscasts. I can't recall exactly, but I think it's under where the book initially explaining all the rules for what can go on Fulcrums.

Yeh, think about it, what could they possibly add beside the models. Which in my opinion is better, you get to not by over priced stuff and make your own.
