Hey everyone had a quick look but no topic started on this yet,

Whats the first impressions then?

As a WE player I look forward to summoning Blood Forests and treesinging the hell out of any unit that is in it,

I have noticed though that the Lore of Athel Loren is missing from the spinner, looks like no bonus for our castings then :(

I am happy at first glance but will have a more detailed outlook by tomorrow after reading the book cover to cover.

Well personally I love it since now I can include more monsters to use in my Skaven army other than RO's or HPA's, I'll have a fun time converting the monsters to be skaveney!
And I absolutely love the WoC things too, like the sorcerers and the bitz for the lords and I've been thinking of creating a 1000 pt WoC army.

But enough modeling talk.

I've skimmed through the rulebook and I think it looks very fun actually. I like the spells and the new tactical challenges the expansion can bring.

I like the thought of dropping a giant spellcasting dragon on top of an Arcane Fulcrum to give it a 3+ Ward Save.

make that 4 Wizard Dragons, that'll fill out 3000 points.

I can imagine the scene now, a Mage is sitting on an Arcane Fulcrum thinking "I AM INDESTRUCTIBLE!!!" as he flings fire and deflects siege atacks, then a monster bigger than the academy he studied in comes swoopin' in and he yelps it terror before jumping off.

I love it so far. The spells really are pretty balanced since the really good ones are very high to cast(except for stinking Metal, wth) and you can not cast cataclysm spells with IF.

The wizard duel is not extremely in high Ld wizards favor, it is random enough because 2d6 is used.

Really, my only complaint so far is the lore of metal cataclysm presence spell. +2 ward ward save for a unit? on a 10+ to cast? WTH Ward? WTH?

This is why storm of magic is awesome. It's just as good as what happened in my first SoM game: A runesmith is sitting on the fulcrum banging out ancestor runes and cursing wizards when a giant rushes up with a great bellow, plucks him off the fulcrum and chucks him across the battlefield where he bounces a few times before slamming into a unit of halberds.

I'm personally very excited for it, I play Dark Elves, the option to field more big, nasty monsters is delicious. Not to mention that I can summon some Slaaneshi/Tzeentch daemons, which makes me very happy because I was originally going to start Daemons and they were my choices.

Not to mention that the magic aspect of Fantasy is probably my favorite, a whole expansion focused on big monsters and big magic, I love it.

I can't wait to get my hands on the book and i've heard theres a spell that summons vermin lords...

Yes. The Dominance spell for Ruin is a vortex that moves around 3d6 inches and inflicts S3 hits on models it goes over. If the vortex moves 13" then you place a vermin lord 13" away from where the vortex stops.

I have to say that from my game today with my dwarfs that its very...interesting. It was nice to have some 'magic' to cast and i can say that the runes are quite effective as i killed both a wizard and manticore with them on 2 strikes. I say that its gonna take some time though before we can really judge this add on

It is interesting, but not very balanced.

I'm definitely looking forward to it, have to still pick up the book though, but I can't wait to play a game.

Yeah noticed that when I had another read, from the wording though only the Cataclysm Spells are treated as high magic for the flux, not that I mind I only plan on uing treesinging which is a 4+ casting and the rest of Lore, if anyone does use them, are low casting value as well.

I am also looking forward to building some other models as well, for my VC army I fully intend to build some Empire handgunners for the Seven Secret Sigils of Summoning, imagine a VC army with a shooting phase, a Hellblaster you say, don't mind if I do.......

I played my first game of it yesterday, and it was really quite fun.

I like how GW worded the fulcrums too, so that any troop type can capture one so long as it's a wizard, but only if the base fits on it. Which means foot casters can occupy all of the GW fulcrums, but Slann and larger based wizards can't; gobbo spiders would need a custom made fulcrum if you even wanted to dream of capturing one.

I'm looking forward to playing it. I'm planning out what monsters and other units I want for bindings and for the summoning spell to back up my rats. Definitely getting some FW Chaos Dwarfs to summon to the field!

Oh and the bonegrinder giant is a even more diverse and has even more attacks, but thanks to the monsters and magic allowance lets it be taken in 1500 points, and be faster than fast cav. (M10!)

Yeah, I honestly am a bit sad that the lore of Athel Loren cannot be ascendant, although in friendly games I am sure my opponents wouldn't mind treating the spells as high magic as that is what it is in the fluff anyway.
Also I totally cannot wait to summon steam tanks to fight alongside my treemen.......

The SoM spells for Athel Loren are classed as High Magic. Not sure if this expands to include the rest of the lore, as I don't have the SoM book, only the cards.

This is the quote regarding wood elf magic,

All wood elf wizards know the following spells. For the purposes of magical flux, these spells are considered to be high magic spells.

Only the Storm of magic spells unfortunatly.

Played a 3k game Daemons vs Skaven. Was pretty awesome. used some custom terrain pieces as fulcrums so size wasn't an issue for fateweaver or a verminlord to use a fulcrum. At one point we had 3 verminlords on the table. The seven secret sigils of summoning I pulled off in dominance was awesome because at 300 points nothing wrecks face like 20 swordmasters. Ended up as a draw, but a very bloody draw.

My only complaint is there is no caveat I saw allowing daemons to use the items in the book. However that being said a Bloodthirster with the dawnstar sword and dark insanity could be the most op beast ever.

Remember, your attacks cannot go above 10, but auto wounding and stuff would hurt alot. Im toying with the idea of a thane with the sword that adds d6 to all you stats in a challenge then kills you at the end, for lols.

Your Attacks characteristic can't go past 10, but you can have more than 10 Attacks.

Oh... thats nice. Auto hitting auto wounding with 18 attacks is nasty.

I went by my FLGS yesterday to pick up a copy and they were sold out. The owner forgot to accommodate for the big Warhammer tourney being held in town this past weekend. Blew clear through just about everything SoM that he'd ordered (book, models, terrain, etc) including the Battle Magic card set with case that I really wanted :-(

Fortunately, I came straight home and saw the Battle Magic was still available on the GW site, and ordered me a set along with the first Storm of Magic novel. Got my shipping notice this morning, and now see the SoM Battle Magic cards are not even showing up on the website anymore. Whew!

I'll pick up the book later in the week or next week after he restocks.

I like it so far but I think my only complaint is with the book itself. I like the idea of the spinner on the inside cover, but I would have liked it to open like a normal book instead of the wrap around thing. It's a pain to read, the pages you flip over on the left hand side just flop around all over the place and I've already bent a few of em. I don't want to sit at a desk to read a textbook, I do all my reading on my Porcelain Throne.

Well Necros, I had hoped the spinner was in the back when I saw pictures on line. The book is bad for my library(bathroom) as well as reading in bed. So I agree.

Ive decided instead of using my spinner (i doesnt spin well, nobody who bought it at the same time as me does either) and get a 8 sided dice, much easier.
