I was actually curious about that once, after the basement flooded and the insurance company said we had to tell them about each and every item we wanted to claim for the insurance, and had to include photos and how much we'd paid for it.

- No, none of my miniatures were damaged in the flood, I was curious in case the house burned down or something. -

So I went up to my shelves and started to tally each miniature I had. After one and a half shelves and two sheets of paper, I got bored.

If I had to estimate it, I'd say upwards of 5,000 dollars in the 10 years I've been playing.

I have pared down to the following right now:

2nd incarnations of my Nurgle and Slaanesh armies, my massive khorne horde and chaos daemons.

Currently working on my chaos renegades and Dark Eldar forces.

If the new Necron book is interesting I might find myself doing Necrons again. I really enjoy the modeling and converting side of the hobby and would keep buying new armies to tinker with. Eventually I would get to a point where I realized that I didn't have time to play all the armies I had at the time and would clear a bunch out. Eventually the urge would hit me and I'd start buying stuff again to build and tinker with and so it would repeat over and over until I got through the list shown.

Well think about it: ok you spent A LOT. But now ask yourself this question: am i having a great time with my models? Yes? See, its not wasted money. My aunt for example had herelf talked into bying a 2.5k euro vacuum cleaner a well a a 3k euro cofee machine. Now is she having as much fun with that junk as we are having with 5.5k € of GW stuff? I really doupt THAT!!

It has kept me happy and generally out of trouble for the last 25 years or so... Of course this is just a 40k thread...I shudder to think what my cost totals are when I add in WFB armies, blood bowl teams, general minis I just wanted to paint, Epic armies, Warmaster armies, etc, etc, etc...

A three thousand Euro coffee maker better go outside and pick the beans, grind them up, and personally deliver you a hot cup of coffee.

I initially guessed $1000-$1500 in the 6 years I've been collecting, but it's probably half again that.

Are you so lacking in imagination that it hasn't crossed your mind that quite a few people who post here are long time veterans who'd not only have multiple armies across multiple systems, but have also indulged themselves with some nice FW resin fun?

And this. I dread to think how much I've spent and, quite frankly, if I did try to calculate it I'd probably get the shock of my life. My collection consists of masses nearly all Epic minis (Probably about 10% of produced Epic minis I haven't got), 40k, BFG, Space Hulk and old WFB. That's not counting other manufacturers. Though I have been having a mass sell off lately and flogging loads on ebay. Though that money seems to go straight through to Forgeworld!

I'm actually probably closer to $10,000 than $5,000 over 4 years, but with recent GW issues including price hikes, rules flubs, and ease of entry into the game plus what I perceive as a general shift from GW games to other systems, my spending has not only gone to zero, but I'm a net seller now.

If anyone from GW reads this post, take heed: I'm a vet tourney competitive gamer who has spent more than $2.5k on your hobby per year. Your recent actions have driven me out completely. Estimate how many new entrants you'd need to make up for losing my patronage, and then balance the effort of incrementally increasing your customer base by that amount against the effort of printing clear, concise rules and having better internal army balance.

Wow. I thought I was the only one that had a direct fund pipeline to Forge World via ebay like that. Good to know I'm not alone.

Well, this is suppose to be a poll on 40k only, but I'm sure many have overlooked that.
A $5k total isn't really all that much for a hobby. Some people have a hobby of going out to eat all too often and may spend $5k in a single year. Many collectors would laugh at a $5k investment into a hobby. People who travel may very well spend $5k in a couple trips.

I've been on and off in 40k for about ten years and guestimate I've spent around $3k-$4k or so.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

I'd never add it up, as I'm sure I'll be in the corner rocking back and forth wondering what I was doing spending all that money.

Easily over $5000, probably double that. I've had over fifteen armies over the years, even if I take that as a static number and go on an average of about a £400 spend per army, that would be £6000, or $9'780ish.

I know its way more than that, my old long gone Imperial Guard army alone had over £1000 worth of tanks and this was at year 2000-2001 prices. Never mind the troopers.

Thats as close as I go, I'm not figuring out the exact total. *goes and hides*

edit - oh and I note some are thinking we might be including fantasy forces.. thats a no. If I include fantasy, well .. I'll be in the corner if you need me.

In the 90's
Thousand Sons (mix of RTB001 and metals, about 60 marines) *
Siam Hann Eldar (large force at the time, about 80 Eldar, mostly metal) *
Deathskulls and Badmoons (large force, about 140 Orks) *
Fire Wolves (counts as Space Wolves, about 1500pts) *
Imperial Guard - old plastics and metals (2000pts) *
Dark Angels (2000pts, a lot of termies) *
Scythes of the Emperor (5000pts - three Land raiders, lots of tanks and troops) *
Since 2000-2001
Imperial Guard redux - 3 regiments (about 10'000pts) *
Dark Angels - 2nd go (Scout force, with some extras, about 1500pts) *
Iyanden Eldar (4-5000pts inc 3 wraithlords and 20 wraithguard as an example of the size) *
Pre Heresy World Eaters (3000pts) *
Space Wolves (lots of troops, several Wolf Guard termies, Ragnar, tanks, Dreads, probably 2500-3000pts) *
CSM - Sons of Kharos (5-6000pts - currently selling most of it)
Deathskulls - 2nd go (6-7000pts and current army)
Eldar - Prince Yriels Raiders - 3rd and final go (1500pts) *

Sure I've had more, but those are the ones I can remember at the moment, playing, collecting 40K since since 1989-90.

Ah, forgeworld. That's fair enough since that wasn't on my mind when I made this poll. Still, $5000 for anything is a sizable amount; given how its over 10 years however, it dosen't seem quite as bad I guess.
What boggles my mind now is what do you do with so many models? Perhaps sell some on ebay for a super discounted price? I've met people with like 5 fantasy armies and ~2000-6000 points in every one of them and I just think to myself,

Foolishly really started thinking about the math because of this thread. Adding in minis/armies and rulebooks purchased for WFB, 40k, Blood Bowl various epic versions, warmaster and Mordheim I know I have spent easily in the $50k-$100k range through the last 25 years. If I were to sit down and think about spending that all at once I'd consider myself totally insane, but it all adds up over all that time. That total doesn't include all of the roleplaying books I have purchased in the last 34 years, the historical minis and games I've purchased and played, the minis I've bought just because I liked them and wanted to paint them...yowza!!

I can remember one 2 year span when I had gotten my first really high paying job I spent like $500 a month on GW stuff for new armies and games and the like. So just in those 2 years alone I spen around $12k...ouch. Heck between my chaos renegades army (where every mini is either a full FW mini or uses FW conversion parts), my Dark Eldar army and adding some awesome FW pieces to my chaos armies I have easily spent $1500-$2000 only on minis for GW games just since this past January. That doesn't include the pile of minis I purchased to add to my Flames of War early war forces for the league I was playing all that time either.

Oh boy...don't think I should have started thinking about this in such detail. Since I am getting divorced I don't have much else to spend the money on until I can find myself a role as someone's sugar daddy anyway.

Not sure why people would think that the 5000+ would be trolls.

I'm sure a lot of people invest a lot more in this hobby than people seem to think.

I myself have, within an error margin of 100ish dollars:

Chaos Marines: $2300 - 100% of which was bought new from stores or through GW's website.

Sisters of battle: $1950 - 70% of this bought new from stores, 30% from eBay

Random army stuff I thought looked good - $300

GW Terrain: $950

Hobby supplies - $900 - this includes greenstuff, paints (have around $500 in those alone), brushes, primers, plasticard, foamboards and everything that can be thought off.

This puts me around $7395 and some people have a ton more points in their armies than I do so I expect some people to say they've easily spent $10000 and possibly more.

Yet, I am screwed as converted to dollars its not as low as I expected when I entered this hobby.

Gone from "full ahead" to "hit the brakes!" currently.
Partially thanks to designs like the stormraven and the dreaded knight, but also secrecy of releases and delaying subscriptions.
Can't plan to buy what I don't know of...

Maybe its enough when your 40k minis can fill the floor of a standard sized room. ( 3x5 m ).

I can honestly say $5,000+, though, to be honest that includes spending on WFB, Mordheim, Necromunda, etc. not just on 40K.

If you count all of the paint, army transports, etc. over the past 11 years, then I've spent ~$7.7k on Warhammer 40k. I have a very large Black Templars force (~10k points) and about 2k points worth of Dark Eldar, of the old and new variety. So, too much. lol!
