How is 'using' different to 'firing' with regards to ranged weaponry?

The distinction being made is that 'counting as firing a ranged weapon' means that it follows the same process as a ranged weapon, whereas 'counting as using a ranged weapon' would mean that it follows the same process and could be used in any situation where a ranged weapon could be used.

'Firing' instead of 'using' restricts it to following a specific part of the ranged weapon rules, rather than making it effectively a ranged weapon.

It would take a pretty big douche not to let someone do it IMO. Not being a jack > winning tournaments.

At first I was in support for letting it DoG but now +1 to Deadshot. Shoot the rear armour in your turn.

Also note that demonic gifts are explicitly declared as counting as ranged weapons, 'regular' PSAs are not.

But remeber you'll need to survive a turn of shooting and assaulting,but a 3++ save should help.

As a nid player who uses Zoens in almost every army id have to say I couldn't use a PSA to DoG. Its not a weapon, its a psychic power. Also, a psa is limited to use during your shooting phase. You have no permission to use it in the opponents movement phase.

You're not implying the only reason that is illegal is because of the amount of attacks are you?

I am implying it is illegal because it is not a weapon or wargear, it is a psychic power.

Using a psychic ability in response to a tank shock would open way to many options. Even though using a psychic shooting power counts as a ranged attack doesn't make it a weapon, its still an ability. Taking some of the phrases out of context has a big impact on the game.

The problem is that the DoG rule says you can use a ranged weapon (among other things). A psychic shooting attack is not a ranged weapon; are psychic abilities under the wargear entry for your model, along with all his other ranged weapons? No, they are either under psychic powers.

Rulebook states

[However, if he is allowed to fire more than one ranged weapon per turn, he can replace the firing of any or the weapons he is allowed to fire with a psychic shooting attack (but still cannot use the same power twice in a turn)]

so my take on that would be, as tank shock would occur during the opponents turn during which you would not normally be allowed shoot, i would allow it, provided i had not used that specific psychic attack during my turn.

Keep in mind that 'turn' refers to "player turn", not 'game turn' unless specifically stated otherwise.

Tank-shocking a zoey isn't a bad tactical decision if you have psychic hoods in your army - as soon as it declares DoG, you basically kill the 'thrope on a 4+ (3+ with Njal). Even if you don't block the power it still has to penetrate, then roll any result other than a (2).

Depends on what's TSing.If its front AV 10,it's automatic,AV11 it's 1 to glance,anything else 2=glance,3+=penetrate.

A zoenthrope doesn't have permission to use warp lance during a tank shock so the point is moot.
