What does screwing with PSN and FaceBook get anyone? It just pisses people off en mass and makes the hackers look like a bad guy. There was a reason that "Cowboy" bank robbers and 20s gangsters that robbed banks were looked at like heros of the people. Because it seemed like they were fighting against institutions that were just out to screw the average man. Sure, but the problem is that people don't actually THINK about this stuff. Consider all the ridiculous things you see on the failbook blog, now consider that employers, family members, and in general, anyone else who has any interest in doing so, can simply get a copy of all these things you've said. And you can opt-in, but you can't opt-out. You've no way to delete anything posted on the site. You can't make it forget. And you can't trust the operator.

The thing I love is how when the bad is mentioned, "I don't put anything important on it" is the retort, and then the potentials for good include "helping to overthrow oppressive regimes." Isn't being a potential revolutionary the kind of sensitive bit of information that you wouldn't want falling into the wrong hands? I wouldn't use a platform like that for opposition to oppressive regimes, because it would be too simple to see just who was a member of the resistance. All you would need is some simple means of coercion (money, threats, whatever) and then Facebook hands all that information over without batting an eye. Frankly, the most surprising thing is that this hasn't happened already.

If it were me, I'd probably use something akin to an IRC server situated in a unfriendly country that I connect to through Tor. It's not very viable for the non-technical layman, true, but I'm sure that if the need arose, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to encapsulate something like that into something accessible through a webserver.

I'm thinking that this 'group' of Anon members are a bunch of nerdy college kids that have a facebook friend count of 30 or so people and are thus nerdraging against the 'establishment'. Going to what could be summed up as a nerd school, it never fails. Every Nov. 5 a bunch of kids get together w/ Guy Fawkes masks and sidewalk chalk to write lines from V for Vendetta and that atrocious poem (made atrocious by its misuse) all over the school buildings. Pisses me off like you wouldn't believe.
