No, Hot Topic IS pretty dumb...
I love a number of bands that would be considered goth and/or lumped under that umbrella (Sisters of mercy is on heavy rotation in my ipod, as are select songs from The Cure, a good bit of early Coctrau twins, Joy Div., etc., etc.), but I could care less for the fashion or "scene" (though goth girls can be rather "cute").

I hope you're both gakking me (I assume the wink emoticon was meant to signal agreement). God's Gonna Cut You Down is an old American folk song, hardly a creation of Johnny Cash. While his rendition was darker than most of the more gospel-y versions that predate it, it has nothing in common with Goth Rock.

The "Monster Mash" is a pop song not a Goth Rock song.
Edit:
Oh it was a joke, nvm.

Things were a bit less " sanitized" and " pre packaged" back then, you didn't see Mom's dropping their kids off at " The Punk rock show" in their suburban mini vans...things were just ..." dirtier" ...I liked it that way.

To me, I don't consider myself goth, but I like the music, I like all music TBH.

Never considered myself "Goth" either...but they sort of gravitated towards the "Punks" ( at least when I was young), so I knew a lot of them...
Got along with some, some annoyed the hell out of me...I could only stomach so much " Life is agony" Poems before I just wanted to go get drunk and have some laughs.
EDIT: Hot Topic is a business, turning a profit off of " rebellion" ...seriously if I'd seen a store like that twenty years ago...I'd have laughed about it...
Sure there were " Punk" clothing stores back then...but most were privately owned and barely kept their heads above water.

I like Sisters of Mercy, some Bauhaus/Love and Rockets, some Cure...
I think like Fitzz though, at the point when those were active/popular I was more into the punk music (and in my case mixed it with a good dose of thrash). I was as likely to be at a 7seconds or Suicidal Tendencies or Bad Religion or Anthrax or Nuclear Assault or Gang Green show as at the one club (Kitchen Club) on South Beach that seemed to mix industrial/goth.
Seems there was a lot of commonality in the goth, industrial, and punk fans back then.

So true, I stopped going there once they started selling drake shirts.

Yep, a lot of it went together, nowadays, punk isn't what it used to be.

Ditto.
I remember having to mail order Doc martens as you could not buy them anyplace locally.
Though really, looking back our "rebellion" in the eighties early nintie was still pretty much mostly posturing/fashion even it wasn't supported by the mainstream commercial machine like it is now...

Exactly Jake...
I'd go see Black Flag or Fear one night and go see DRI or SOD the next, and there were always a lot of Goth kids and "Hey Bra's" ( what we called Metal heads) hanging out at " Punk clubs" back then.
For the most part all these "tribes" got along pretty good and enjoyed each others "styles".

I can agree with that to an extant..in as much as the desire to look " different" from the status que did play a part in things...
But I do think their was a much different " mind set" going on as well...perhaps it's just that things seemed a lot more politicaly charged then....or perhaps it was because you knew that by walking around with blue hair back then there was a real good chance you were going to get into a fight ( which we did often)...but things just seemed ...different then, of course I'm looking at things through my nostagia glasses.

Does Nine Inch Nails count as being goth? If so, then Theres one band, aside from Wumpscut, that I listen to in any great amount that can be considered goth. I have also heard Tool being considered goth, especially the Undertow, and Aenima albums.
i do tend to hate generalizations as well. One of my buddies is a huge Dimmu fan, and just a couple weeks ago, someone called him a "goth", while he was wearing a Dimmu shirt no less! I suppose that this person just saw him wearing black, and automatically assumed goth
....or perhaps it was because you knew that by walking around with blue hair back then there was a real good chance you were going to get into a fight ( which we did often).
Sounds like one of the between song comments by Mike Ness on Live at the Roxy.

Many folks were a lot less "open minded" in the 80's/90's when it came to things like that then they are today ( or at least seem to be)..especially in the American South.
Even in a city like New Orleans or Atlanta, funny colored hair ( or "weird" hair styles) could often get you into a fight back then...I didn't mind that much ( I liked fighting...strange as that might sound), but a lot of my friends got beat up.

Speaking for myself my hometown and surrounding in the eighties/early ninties was a rural, ultra-conservative, backwater with equal dose of homophobia and racism sprinkled on top for seasoning...
Back then any number of things could get you harrassed, assauted, or persecuted by adults/authorities on adaily basis.
If you liked any form of music that wasn't "redneck approved" you were a "[see forum posting rules]"
IF you had a friend that wasn't white you were a "N*gga lover" and/or both of you must certainly be "[see forum posting rules]".
God forbid you have an earring, a "funny haircut" or wear anything that suggested you didnt want to fit in as that of course made you a "[see forum posting rules]".
Starting to get the idea?
Most kids "bought in". Those of use that didn't faced daily threats, social exclusion, actual fights/assaults, and usually the assumption by authority figures (teachers, parents, cops, etc.) that it must have been the "[see forum posting rules]/weirdos" that started the trouble.
OF course we took pride in irritating the hell out of them, as well as the occassional battle one, etc.
I like some of it. It's one of the genres I'll listen to more of (there are a few genres I won't touch with your barge pole, but I digress).
Used to rock out (heh) with Siouxsie Sue as a teen, as well as Sisters later on, and a bunch of other bands (some who still exist, but have started to call themselves 'metal'). Met her , Severin and Budgie at a gig back in the early 90s (was living with a friend of the guy running the 'fan club' for them).
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
Someone pick a decade (of the last three) and I'll post some awesome goth songs/videos from the period. Or feel free to narrow it to a year or range of years.
I don't listen to as much Goth and Industrial as I used to, but there's been a lot of awesome stuff over the years.

Goth is (was? IDK, I'm old now) an even more fashion dependent scene than punk. The sub-genre of "goth" music is so varied and unevenly applied. I remember many squandered all night coffee shop conversations about was and was not Goth. Basically it boils down to black makeup and trenchcoats. That's "Goth". All goth music could be more accurately re-labelled as industrial, new wave, techno, etc., as the case may be.

I have a few Sisters of Mercy tunes on my ipod to help me come of my Progressive/Thrash/Death/Power/Black Metal "highs". Seriously though the few (three or so I think) songs I have heard from Sisters of Mercy I enjoy.
What about Bible of Dreams? Juno Reactor had a lot of awesome stuff. They're not really Goth, but they got significant rotation in the Goth/Industrial/Synthpop clubs.
:( No one obliged my request to name me a time period from which to cherry-pick great tunes. So I'll just start sampling.
Over the top crazy awesomeness from My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, 1990.
Super great dance track from the aforementioned Juno Reactor CD Bible of Dreams, 1997:
