I've always liked music like depeche mode, the cure, souxie and the banshees, wake, and the likes of such groups. My question, dakka, is do you like anything from this genre?
Wake - christine
And some goth industrial:
Wumpscut - wreath of barbs
And for a good cry, I like this
Imperative reaction - divide

I can't see this videos at work, so please could someone satisfy my curiosity? The first video appears to be called 'Christine.' Is it a cover of the Siouxsie and the Banshees song of the same name?

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
Why does one have to be part of a scene to like music?
Music "scenes" are frequently dumber than spitting on a Marine's face after insulting his dead squadmates.
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

One doesn't "have" to belong to a "scene" to enjoy music....no restrictions have been passed that I'm aware of.
But people with simular taste in music ( and indeed many things) will often come together...don't see what's "dumb" about that.

How can you tell a goth from a poser?
The poser admits to being goth.
I still enjoy the music and there are still some bands in the genre and its nearby environs that are putting out new music. That being said, the goth scene was, and probably still is, kind of silly. Ahh the 90s.

Because they use the "scene" to feel and act superior to people who aren't "in" it.

...That's a bit of a generalization, I was a very active part of the "punk scene" in the 80's and 90's ( both on and off stage) and while some people did have the elitist attitude your attributing to them...many didn't...
Your claim is similar to saying all gamers are dirty smelly fat neck bearded socially inept clowns.
EDIT:...What also strikes me as just a bit funny is that you Melissa, seem to embrace a certian " elitism" your self and often come across as believing yourself " superior" to others...of course I could be wrong about this, but I'm basing my opinion on prior post I've read.

Plus I've got a spazzed up left hand (tendon damage thanks to Mr Window) so I could only reliably put the nail polish on the one hand.
... ..Yeah, I could see where that might be a problem...
I was never much into "make up" either, but many of my ex's during that era would do the whole Mortica Addams/Bride of Dracula bit...
Me, if my Mohawk was nice and spikey I was all set.

I like Joy Divisions early stuff ,The Cure just whine and there are to many sounds for me haha. As for the more industrial stuff its boarder line annoying not all of it. One of my favorite doom and gloom bands has always been T.S.O.L they always had a were all gonna die but who gives a crap sound and they actually had some rockin aggressive tunes

No, my claim is similar to saying "pro-level gamers tend to look down on casual gamers". Which is generally true. There are exceptions, but there's always an exception to a generalization.

Yes, I believe myself to be morally superior to rapists, or pedophiles, or serial killers, or so on. Intellectually superior to those who actively reject all forms of education (not those who simply don't have the opportunity, though). Physically superior to those whom do not keep their body in at least marginal shape.
But I'd have to be pretty depressed and self-loathing not to believe the first two, and I think the last one is probably provably true...

Goths can be attractive. I mean, look at Abby on NCIS. She had her own fanclub from the moment the pilot episode aired, and it only grows the longer the show lasts.
