Of course this is true from our point as players of the game.
But they have retconned Leman Russ to be the Primarch that the LRBT was named after. the former imperial general no longer exists, and never did, as far as the current fluff situation is concerned.

Well, the man and the tank have similar features, tough, hits like a train, and will drink any thing.
So naming the tank after Russ makes sense

As pointed out in the other recent thread asking the same question, Forge World have tried to normalise the background drift that surrounds the name Leman Russ by naming their new tanks after other Heresy-era commanders, i.e. the Valdor Tank Hunter, Malcador Heavy Tank, etc.

In the middle period between the Imperial Guard commander being Leman Russ and it just being nicely named after him, GW had him being the inventor of the Leman Russ.
Something to do with realising the huge gap in the market for a tank that was easy to fix, run and deadly so he invented the most versatile thing he could (in a similar fashion to the AK47 being the daddy of guns in real life).

to be fair, the RT era fluff was very odd and needed to be changed to be a little more serious.
GW was still developing the fluff of the universe and was testing ideas out. those that didn't work were retconned away.

Do you have any solid evidence to the contrary?
Mostly him being an unstable savage in the only material I have ever seen elaborate on the Primarch himself, A Thousand Sons.
Now, admittedly, I have only read A Thousand Sons, and haven't been able to acquire Prospero Burns yet, but that's kind of why I asked, I was wondering if in that or any other work he himself was portrayed as anything else. Since there's nothing that really states Russ himself was this super awesome cool dude in the Space Wolves codex.
HH novels are irrelevant. The SW Codex paints the Wolves as a bunch of party-hearty Martys outside the theater of war, and states that their name, of all the Astartes Chapters, is the most popular and well-known across the Imperium. The Codex all but names the Space Wolves as "most popular Space Marines in the eyes of the common citizen. Ever.".

I give not a single gak about the "current" Space Wolves, I am personally under the impression that the Space Wolves of the early Imperium are different than those of the current day. It is fallacious to assume Leman Russ and his current batch of Wolves are exactly the same, while they may emulate his ways in battle, they don't seem to emulate his character. The Astartes are not pastiche copies of their respective Primarchs.
If not the HH novels, what should we use to analyze the characters of the Primarchs? Since in the codices themselves not much information is written about them.
Keep in mind, I'm acknowledging that Prospero Burns may portray Russ in a better light (Although from what I hear it doesn't), I am actually asking for any evidence of Russ being approachable or friendly. Because I sure as hell haven't been shown any.

Prospero Burns does in fact have a few scenes of him being understanding, in that he was willing to talk to a character that didn't necessarily warrant his attention as a primarch (can't say much more without spoilers). He wasn't exactly portrayed as friendly, but rather that he had an unassuming attitude and didn't consider other humans as inferior. Because of this, I think the later actions of the SW talked about in the codex (such as the rescue of guardsmen from Armageddon) are entirely keeping with the spirit of the primarch.
As for the tank naming, I think all the existing fluff reasons have already been given, like it or not.

Oh don't misconstrue my nerdhate to mean I think he shouldn't have a tank named after him, I'm pretty fine with that. To be honest, why not name a tank after a Primarch? And the Leman Russ tank does share traits with the Primarch.
I'll take your word for it on Russ, and am admittedly kind of glad to hear he's not quite as much of a douche as he appeared to be, will try to read Prospero Burns as soon as I can.

Wasn't it because he saved a Forge World during the Heresy and they changed the name of the tank to honour the rescue?
Leman Russ has been the founder of the Space Wolves since first edition, whether founder means Primarch or not?
The first ed has a description of the Space Wolves fortress monastary says:
The Reclusiarch has an office off to one side, and there are three private chapels dedicated to Leman Russ (the Chapters founder) The Emperor Deified and the Emperor Oracular.
