The limit is the limit...the numbers are there to ensure an even playing field for those involved...taking any extra advantage even a microscopic one is unfair. Our gaming group is pretty clear about point overages and it's pretty much resounding "No"

I guess our group is on the exact opposite side of the spectrum. We started playing in 2nd ed and for some reason or another could never hit even numbers, so we've always allowed for a 10 point buffer just off the bat.
I know from playing Nids now that hitting exact numbers can be incredibly difficult, mostly because of the odd points costs to begin with and the crazy amount of biomorphs. I can see where others are coming from, that if I have a squad of 8 genestealers and give them all ST which puts me at 4 over, I could just as easily take away that biomorph and be back under...but then I'm pretty much hosed on what to do with those extra 12 points as another genestealer is more than that.
Absolutely best for everyone to just be on the same page one way or another!

I have to say no, better to be under and win then over and win imo.
Would you really like to have a super close game and win, only to hear your opponent say that you had an unfair advantage, not me.

You seem to be mistaking some local house rule for actual rules.
Oh for goodness sake.
Where did I say that going over by the points of your least expensive model was a current rule?
Can we get this clear for the harder of reading?
I said I recalled it was an old rule.
Yak came along and said he didn't think it was an old 40K rule and on reflection I agreed and I'm virtually certain it's an old fantasy one.
Regardless of that, what I said, and actually quite explicitly, was that in a friendly game I used it as my personal rule of thumb for whether an opponent was too much over his point limit, which I think has happened once in the thirty or so games I've played this year. I also made it quite clear that there is a distinction between casual games and tournament play in this regard. And that I personally do not exceed the points limits under any circumstances.
Got that?
Good.
Now perhaps we can move on.

Follow these two simple rules to ensure a happy Dakka experience:
Rule 1 - to be a proper 40K player you must cry whenever a new edition of the game is released, and always call opposing armies broken when you don't win.
Rule 2 - Games Workshop are always wrong and have been heading for bankrupcy within 5 years since the early 90s. |

If I was the T.O then absolutely not
If it was a rush list-making at the last minute in response to a points value offered for a pick up game that the opponent didnt have a suitable list for- thats ok .
Otherwise Ive taken the time and sometimes much effort to compile a list within the point limit and I expect the same courtesy .

5 points is the difference between a Mortar and an Autocannon. It makes a hell of a lot of difference to the Rhino heading towards you.
3 points allows for a Singing Spear upgrade. Make a lot of difference to the Land Raider nearby. Plus I get to hear about how his Warlock killed my Land Raider forever.
Saying; "It's just 1 point. It doesn't make a lot of difference" is a huge fallacy. That 1 point might be part of a larger chunk of points that makes it possible to field that extra Hive Guard, Terminator, Meltagun or whatever.
Saying; "Just add a Melta Bomb to one of our Sergeants and we are even" is a fallacy. Said squad might not have been taken to move aggresively forwards....making the upgrade utterly pointless. Hell, it might even induce me to stray from the basic tenents of my battleplan, which I had in mind when I made the armylist. Maybe I even considered giving him a Melta Bomb but discarded the idea because it was a useless waste of points.....and now I add it again to compensate for your unwillingness to follow the rules?
If 5 points is no big deal, then remove them. They are "no big deal", remember?
I do see it the same way really. Those 5 points could be bringing something deadly to the game that's attached to something already deadly enough. It may be 5 points, but that 5 points could be the difference between one my trukks delivering my orks safely to their lines or being blown up on turn 1. The limit is the limit.

We have a house rule for friendly games that you are allowed 10% over the limit if agreed by both parties.
At tounements, it's a definate no.

LMAO
So in 2000pt games you can, if you feel like it, take an extra 200 points?
Why wouldn't you just call it a 2200 point game?
That is just utterly ridiculous.
I would not allow it. If someone browbeats me into it, i might not care in a friendly game. I win almost all my games anyways, so really the extra few points over is not worth an argument. I might not be inclined to play that individual again, but it might be better than not playing at all.
At a tourny, I'm calling shinanigans if you show up with even a fraction of a point over.

Thank you for putting me in a situation where I, by saying "no", is denying you your "right to have fun". I am not really given a choice. You broke the rules/agreement and suddenly I'M the TFG?!?
We have to set the limit somewhere....and that might as well be at the limit agreed upon beforehand.
+1 to this. Exactly my thoughts on the subject.

I hate when people take 'OVER' then see what army their opponent takes and then drops the wargear or model that will do the least impact. It is an intentional form of list tailoring. Dropping that melta bomb against Nids and dropping that heavy bolter against mech...
The limit is the limit. If being over is no big deal than being under is also no big deal.

Thing is, if your list comes to 2001pts in a 2000pt game, the difference is usually more than one point. The cheapest upgrade in the army could have been a 10pt missile launcher, for example; so, by going over the limit by 1pt, you're actually essentially gaining a free missile launcher.
In tournaments, going over the limit is definitely not allowed. In friendly games, I'd allow it if we simply increase the points value of the game. Usually it just means I get a small upgrade somewhere, but in the end it makes things fair.

I don't care if you have more points than me. I'll play my 1850 against your 2000, not a biggie. But if we agreed on 2000 and you bring 2001, problem.

Points limits aren't speed limits...there are rules!
But seriously...even when I play CSM, where my Troops choices are 21 or 23 points ea., the points cost of my 1850 army is 1848. Those two points I'm not including are pretty serious, as it's the difference between a Berzerker and a Plague Marine.
Some builds are only possible within the confines of the codex at certain points values. Playing 10 points under is better than playing 1 point over IMO.

Why set a point limit if you are just going to go over? Keep it under the set limit at all times. I take time to make sure my lists come in at, or below, the point value we agree upon before the game, and I feel its disrespectful to go above the set limit. I expect the same respect from my opponent.

If I made hard choices and got my list to 1999, you better keep yours at or under 2000 too. I won't refuse a game to someone with 2001 points, but I would ask them to edit down at least a point before I'd play them.

Personally, I agree with the above posts. In friendly games, it wouldn't matter that much. But in a tourney setting, you've got to be at or under the limit. My friend and I were actually just discussing this the other day while building 800 point lists for our home games. He plays DE, I've got Orks, and his list hit 802. I didn't care too much. But yea, there ya go.
