Most people deserve to be sharing their opinions, it's just questionable as to wether or not they deserve recognition.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I almost never use it. But Ill change a post several times to correct spelling. Even then, I still re read what I just wrote to make sure Im not slaughtering spelling.

But ya, I blame summer. Its nearly done, and those blasted whipper snappers will be to busy with school and promnights and such to even bother coming back here

I never said I didn't care that it's wrong, only that it was intentional. If I intentionally eat a steak, does that mean I don't care about the cow that donated it? I love that cow for donating the steak.

My browsers have spell-checkers that underline any misspelled words for me (in red) so I can pick them out when and if they happen before I hit the 'submit' button.

Then again, I got into the habit of going over anything I've written several times to ensure I have it right.

If the posts come across as made by an uneducated and disinterested in learning teen with ADHD and anger-management issues (they get hostile when called-to on their posting), I just ignore them.

The handwriting of my younger club-mates is appalling - their excuse is that they don't have to hand write anything at school anymore - except their keyboard skills are equally atrocious.
Their numeracy is likewise bad (I've seen them struggle to do simple arithmetic (addition of a column of double digit integers) without a calculator).

The worst part is that, typically, such people tend to be fairly pushy in their opinions, meaning that they look both arrogant AND stupid.

There are quite a lot of people for whom English is not a first language, but they are not the perpetrators of the mangled English we see on the forums.

It tends to be natural English speakers, likely the younger posters, that show the poorest use of the language. There's an assumption that it doesn't matter, or that people will understand them regardless.

This is a bad assumption to make, a lot of people can't follow bad spelling and 'txt spk' simply because they are unfamiliar with it due to not been a teenager, or because they have it as a second language.

It's just bad manners. The odd spelling mistake will always creep through, but on my browser at least I get a red squiggle appear under misspelt words to draw my attention to them. So what is the excuse for the posts littered with mistakes?

For instance, I know this post has no spelling mistakes. But it may contain the wrong word, albeit correctly spelt, as that won't be picked up by spell check. In that case I apologise. But the people that mix up 'their' with 'there' and 'they're', or 'you're' with 'your' need to be shot. It's one of my pet hates and, frankly, shows that you are not thinking about what you are writing.

I could care less.

Spoiler:
It's "I couldn't care less" for feths sake.

I. Could. NOT. Care. Less.

Meaning, I care so little, I give not a a single damn, I do not care at all, in fact... I could not care less.

Not... I could care less.

ie. That in fact, I obviously do care a bit (some vague region between 1-100% of caring), because actually... I could care less.

Which is the total fething opposite of what you are trying to say DUMB ASS!!!

I'm not as bothered by it any more, because I see it all the time in Facebook posts.

What really annoys me is all the excuses people try to get away with. I couldn't care less if someone is only fourteen, because that's still fourteen years of being taught how to spell and write.

I think its a bit anal moaning about the odd spelling mistake though, I think that dakka is pretty good generally, I as well miss little things like comma's or always capitalising I or whatever, as long as the thing is coherent and not in text speak, I don't much mind.

I really cant get away with LOL OMG WTF MY M8S R GR8 kinda gak though. When I text I just write like I always do, how much space do you need to save anyways? Its not like we send epic scrolls to our friends via SMS.

And I especially hate text ones that aren't any shorter! I get texts (usually women) with words like L8ter, but they arent any fething shorter?!

You're a repeat offender Matty, in terms of grammatical clangers. However, I know that this is down to the fact that you often post via your phone, when you should in fact be working!

Yeah I'm not on my phone now which is why my spelling and grammar are ok, I often leave the commas and gak out or don't bother to correct minor spelling mistakes when I'm on my phone.

Oh and regards the last half of your sentence, I'm not on my phone because I'm home from work 2 hours early!

Mattyrm, from what Albatross says, you remind me of a buddy of mine. Hes a computer guy, and when he lived in Michigan had a tech job for H&R Block. He would show up all the time and want to goto some restaurant to eat or go hang out somewhere, and one time we even went mud bogging for the day, all while he was on the clock

It was hilarious.

Ok his job sounds way better than mine.

My job is task and finish, and through threats, intimidation and violence I can finish it a couple hours early If I have a good day. I get a helluva sweat on though, and its pretty enjoyable, but I doubt I could go mud bogging for the day...

What the feth is mud bogging?!

I believe mud bogging to be a form of off-road motorised recreation activity... I was going to say motorsport, but i'm not sure that'd be accurate.

Being in school and taking it seriously doesn't necessarily mean they will be able to use proper spelling and grammar. I know plenty of engineers that I work with who can't form a proper sentence or express a cohesive thought in written English to save their lives, but they know how to write software. (Though, that too is debatable at times.) I count myself lucky for having escaped their fate, as I was interested in creative writing throughout high school and college, and took classes to nurture that.

But the overall decline in society's ability to spell and use proper grammar is something I attribute to "txt spk" - possibly the bane of my existence - and to a lesser degree it's predecessor, Instant Messaging shorthand. Texting has evolved into it's own bastardized form of English, where spelling and grammar get tossed right out the window in favor of something potentially shorter and "just good enough to maybe understand". Add into the mix spell-checker and grammar-checker, courtesy of MS Word, and suddenly kids don't have to care about those things - the program coddles them and fixes all of their mistakes for them, instead of forcing them to learn from their mistakes.

The people where English is a second language, or a third...you guys are covered. Anyone who pokes fun at you, feel free to smack them.

Comma's what?

I use commas too much, generally speaking, often when I should, instead, start a new sentence, and sometimes where they are not, needed. Yeah, I've got a problem.
