Yeah I'm a fan of bitterness and spite, this thread sucks!

I don't respect a great many people on here, and I don't see why I have to be civil to them.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Well for one, being stubbornly polite and politely stubborn can piss people off FAR more than active trolling.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Lol, loving the random !

If I read your post correctly, on the OT forum smelling like gak (cant remember the exact phrase you used), then I'll just say that I only posted this here as it didn't relate directly to the topic itself, so it seemed the logical place to put it.

Only had chance to skim all these replies - I'll come back later and read through / reply to everything properly.

Pfff.. thats just more hippy nonsense to me (Melissa not biccat obviously)

What does that even mean!?

I dont mean this in a nasty way, but seriously, what does it even mean? Its the type of thing I hear liberal chislers come out with all the time, you know, its that kinda.. fake niceness that people use so much these days and it utterly infuriates me. You know, like when somebody is clearly taking the piss out of you, but they do it politely so its apparently ok?

Like a traffic warden who is ticketing me for some miniscule offense, and theyt clearly could just let me off, but instead they grin and smile alot and call me sir alot while they threaten to phone the police on me.

If someone is the polar opposite to you in everything, why do you respect them as a person? And being as all humans are persons, how can you not respect another human as a person?

I hate people that think gay people deserve to be treated like rats, or think that rape victims shouldn't be allowed an abortion, or make excuses for child raping priests, I have no desire to pretend I am happy making nice with them, and I have never understood modern society's bizarre fascination with pretending that is the case.

Oh and I really hate people that tell me to love my enemy.

I agree with the point of MODs occasionally giving into Lulz, at the expense of credibility. Although they are afterall (internet) human beings so are bound to want a good larf here and there.

I remember the 'CRASSUS' thread went on FAR too long just because one of the mods, not naming names, seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Some mods are pretty rude when they lock stuff as well, though i guess the user is usually wasting their time.

Yeah well, the point I'm making (badly) is simply that I don't believe that the people who talk about "elevating the civility of their discourse" feel any different about this gak than we do.

I hate Obama. You (in this example) like Obama. You and I get into an argument about Obama, mod comes in, who also hates Obama, and despite your "Validity", it's still your opinion against ours.

Trying to describe what happened without pointing directly at the people involved and eventually inciting another flame war is damned hard...! On this occasion, the OP asked a question, someone posted a reply (admittedly, a bit of a sweeping statement but one that was pretty justified). The OP flamed him, and basically turned in to a platinum grade bastard. Along comes the MOD and cautions those who had put their views forward, but makes no mention to the OP who had more than obviously been just a right nasty bastard Where's the balance there

Yes I do ^.^ I could set the world ablaze through the sheer power of my condensed, concentrated hate, but I choose not to because I'd rather see the world suffer instead of giving it a quick end.

Jokes aside, it's hardly a secret that I have anger management issues.

You don't have to automatically disrespect someone simply because they disagree with you. You can respect them for their achievements or accomplishments. I respect people who do things that are in opposition to me. In fact, I deal with it just about every day of the week. Hell, that's the entire basis of the legal profession.

I suppose the difference is that I respect people for their actions rather than for simply being people. I have very little respect for high school dropouts, but loads of respect for someone like Melissia who is taking a fairly demanding college curriculum (chemistry IIRC) and trying to better herself.

Yes, and this year I FINALLY got approved for financial aid (my father is a small business owner so I was disqualified because of his purported income, nevermind that most of it was spent on maintaining the business, but now that I'm over a certain age limit, I qualify as it uses my income, which is essentially zero), so I'll be able to transfer out of the local college into a university which actually has a chem degree.

Yay. I'm finally moving somewhere.

Generally: Please stop trolling one another; you are making the thread title ironic.

@OP: Following the rules is not hard. There aren't many of them and they can be summed up as "don't be a douchebag." Unfortunately, there is often a lot of rationalization -- someone thinks that someone else's bad behavior justifies their own, for example. Also, it is possible to disagree with someone without flaming them. Summing up someone else's opinion as "whining," for example, is not merely disagreeing with them. Meanwhile, it is my own observation that trolling/flamebaiting/etc are no more or less prevalent now than ever before: i.e., there is not much of it and 99% of users who are moderated are amenable, recognize their poor behavior, and take steps to do better in the future. Unfortunately, there is a recalcitrant 1% who think an internet message board about toy soldier is the right place to make their big stand against "the Power."

I have noticed that some users, after having been on Dakka for a while, get a little restless and start trying to blame the community for why they are not enjoying the site as much as they once did. I think this is where you are right now. I can tell you that my own experience with this community is that the overwhelming majority of users treat each other with respect and seem to enjoy the fellowship. I can also tell you that there is a lot of great content on this site. The moderation is actually petty laid back, except with regard to the serial offenders, and as I already mentioned the rules are both few and sum up the basis of common decency.

Right, when I feth up and post something that gets me warned, I don't blame the community... it was my fault. I shouldn't have posted that, I should have pre-read it and said "wait, that's not right". And I didn't. So I suffer the consequences, as is good and proper.

I think this is a great point. Dakka is like any club: after you've been in it a while, what keeps you interested is less the purported content but the relationships and collegiality.

No matter what area you post in (fluff, army lists, painting, rumors) at some point you run out of information you don't have, and will read less, and quite possibly post less. That's when you need to alter your habits. I rarely post in tactics anymore, because I feel that I can't learn much, and post what help I can.

I do post a lot in the dakka and tournament discussions areas and OT. Those are areas where I'im enjoying the conversation more than I'm trying to get information out of it.
