I like the ST Full Thrust rules. Plays fast and gives a good "feel" of ST starship combat.

Odyssey, Intrepid, and Nova classes? How about some popular and more combat-oriented designs like the Akira, Excelsior Refit, and Defiant?

Probably be better off hitting Ebay for Star Trek Micro Machines and playing Starfleet Battles or homebrewed variants like this (click "3X+ rules" and "The SSDs") and this. Or use Starmada.

I have to agree with you about the ship selection (Are they saving those designs for expansions maybe?), but again, from what I've heard (mainly Russ's comments on the D6G), this game is not really a tactcial minatures wargame in the vein of Starmada, Full Thrust, et all. So, this might be a case of comparing apples and organges. I should have my copy of this game in a week or so, I'll let you guys know . I'm expecting that the ST wargame itch will be more fully scratched by the upcoming ACTA game, but we shall see!

Star Trek ACTA, as in the same ruleset as B5 ACTA?

If so, please tell me they have gone for compatible rules systems for ship combat.. so many geek fused possibilites of mixing those two systems if able.

Based off of the D6G review, it isn't so much a space combat game. The ships chosen for the Federation are appropriate for they types of missions for the Federation in the game. The Klingons have different types of missions that are more suitable for them.

I really recommend everyone listening to the D6G review...

The Defiant is there, as is the original Excelsior (since when is the fat-belly-refit popular?). The Nova is, imho, a very cool design and the Intrepid has to be there because there was an entire series about it. I didn't see an "Odyssey-class"(?), but I noticed they included the Saber-class which I think is neat.

You have a point regarding the Akira, though. Then again, I'm split on the issue - there is a part of me who wouldn't miss it simply because it got hyped so much by the fans, and its designer had some very crazy ideas (that thankfully were never approved by the studio) about it being a totally unfitting "carrier-battleship" with dozens of photon launchers and a size larger than a Galaxy, that keep getting pointed out by people who somehow think that Starfleet = Galactic Empire.

Very happy about the Nova class inclusion. One of my favorite later ship designs.

I actually got to see this game up close. It looks pretty nice. There are about 30-40 ships in the box (15-20 of each faction) Federation and Klingon and I don't remember seeing duplicates (at least on the Federations side - Klingon stuff all looks the same to me so I couldn't be sure). The sculpts themselves I liked and considering I'm usually very critical of Whizkids/NECA that's saying something. The sculpts are unpainted and would be very easy to do a blackline wash and drybrushing (Federation are a light grey, Klingon are the standard Klingon olive drab). All the ships come off their bases.

Past that it's a mission based game with a lot of sturdy looking mission tiles. Everything looked pretty good to me. I can't attest to the gameplay itself. The clix dials are modded up specifically for this game, but are pretty easy to figure out.

All and all I think this is a well put together box. If Whizkids puts out an expansion or two (Romulans or Cardasians) this will be great.

The game comes in at over $100 USD so the price point may not be for everyone. At $50-60 this game would be a solid buy, but $100 I don't know if I'm completely sold. I may trick a friend of mine into buying this (he's a huge ST nerd). Anyways cheers!

Is your FLGS the warstore? Do they normally discount stuff 20%?

The place that I was at this weekend sold it for $100. However after hearing Ruckdog's statement I started browsing around the internet I found a huge variance in prices up to 30% off. Anyways now that I found a box on the cheap I think I might pick one up this month.

I'm kinda hoping the rules are easy to follow and streamlined. If they are, this would make a great game night sort of choice. You know as opposed to RISK'esque game.

I can't wait for this weekend, Lou Zocchi will be at Gamecon Memphis as always. He didn't write Star Fleet Battles directly, but it's predecessor, Star Fleet Battle Manual, which he renamed Alien Space Battle Manual when Paramount found out about it.

The Wizkids mini's remind me of the Micro Machines Star Trek mini's.

Oh shi-, that guy is soo cool.

His videos totally made me buy his dice, and I didn't regret it.

I met him way back in '92, but didn't know who he was. He was just an old guy selling old games and D&D dice. Little did I realize that he designed most of those games and dice. Last year, I asked him about making polyhedral dice sets for D&D and he went on a mini-rant about how poorly made the official TSR dice were.
I had a chance to go to his warehouse in Holly Springs, MS once, but I had to work. :( My buddy who owned the HobbytownUSA said it was a veritable museum.

The only problem with the Mongoose stuff...its all based on the old SFB & ADB line, which is original series and the cartoon. There wont be any TNG, Voyager, DS9 or movie era ships coming from Mongoose. Its just resculpts of the ADB minis.

Not only that, but they'll supposedly be bigger than the old sculpts by something like 10-20%.

Eh, I don't have any problem with them being larger; its a space combat game after all, so the ship sizes are kind of immaterial.

As for the IP, Starfleet Battles is actually a distinct continuity from Star Trek cannon, hence why it ends at the TOS era.

The renders they are previewing (*gasp*) are really quite well done and the models are lining up alot more with the SSD's.

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

They have a babylon 5 wargame.......I should have looked log ago( rushes off to make wish list)

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

HAD a B5 game. It's OOP and hard to get the majority of ships(some are near impossible). Expect to pay a mint to obtain a usable fleet.

At least that' been my experience as a White Star player.

Yeah, that sounds like him. In fairness, he makes a very convincing argument in his videos tho.

Don't Starfleet Command 1 & 2 count as a sort-of official continuation of Starfleet Battles? If so, that'd at least extend its timeline into the movie era (where the coolest ships come from, imho).

ISC ftw, btw.

That's fine as long as the ship-representative-models aren't sized such that they cause problems. The B5: ACTA product line got a bit silly as the 'Armageddon' class ships tended to be a bit large. Large enough to cause problems as you couldn't maneuver them together (despite it being a 'pinpoint' game where the actual ship is considered to occupy the small circle of the stand of t the base.

It's a weird perpetual license from when Star Trek was off the air pre-TNG. Paramount is not amused, as no one would sign such a license agreement nowadays. From what I understand it never expires and is pretty broad, but they are limited tot he material that existed when it was signed and even have some limitations on how often they can say 'Enterprise' and can't use character names.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

They also draw extensively from the Animated Series and the Tech Manual. IIRC, they can't mention the Enterprise at all since every CA & CC you see in art has a different registry. While they couldn't use the designs, you can see the influence of the movies and TNG in the X-Ships and New Cruisers expansions (Feds with pulse phasers, Klingons with photons, heavy phasers, etc.)

THAT is the only problem. Mongoose having its name attached to it.

Might as well be sculped out of a 24 karat turd.

No thanks. Let it join the ranks of the rest of the dropped opportunities and bad decision making of this compnay.
