Just found this:

http://wizkidsgames.com/startrek/star-trek-fleet-captains/

The good news:

A Star Trek game that has Movie and Next Generation era ship miniatures!!!

The bad news:

Its another Clix game.

You get 24 ships, 12 each Federation and Klingon. I would assume that there are more planned since most of the Clix games go through several expansions.

I'm with tarnish, even though I'm a HUGE fan of the franchise.

Someone take away the game from WizKids and give it to FFG, quick!

Russ from D6Generation has painted his mini's... they look amazing. Apparently they painted up quickly too.

As much as I dislike the Star Trek franchise, the game Starfleet Battles is done really well, and as far as I understand, has a strong Star Trek-fan following.

WizKids needs to stop dabbling in buying rights to miscellaneous IPs and then abandoning the game months afterwards. They may get an initial surge of interest, but they will not outsell their own HeroClix nor will they win the hearts of Starfleet Battles players. Most Star Trek fans are older than the average "Wizkids" audience anyways.

If Haloclix and Horrorclix are any indication, making a "Clix" game that's incompatible with the original Heroclix is not going to sell well.

What is the point?

You may be glad (or not, as the case may be) that WK is no longer making stand-alone games: HaloClix is being relaunched as a fully compatible version (September 28), and WK has added Street Fighter Clix and Gears of Wars Clix recently.

Lord of the Rings clix will be out later this year as well.

That said, I don't believe that either Star Trek game is intended to be compatible with Heroclix... but, after all, one involves interstellar space ships, the other involved guys that punch really hard. I note also that Star Trek Expeditions is described as being designed by Reiner Knizia, while Fleet Captains is credited to Mike Elliot and Ethan Pasternack. That may be a result of licensing though: Expeditions is using the IP os the newest movie, while Fleet Captains uses shots from the TV series.

I am both excited and saddened by this news. Love the franchise, but the minis just seem sub par to me.

That's the problem, though. Wizkids found success in Heroclix, so they really care about that franchise. However, they have a terrible obsession with rights to various IPs from Star Wars (Pocketmodels, etc), Mechwarrior, Battlestar Galactica, Shadowrun, Pirates of the Carribbean, etc and making one-shot games based on those IPs. If that one-shot game isn't compatible with Heroclix, the game gets abandoned within months. Once Mage Knights folded, Wizkids' entire business model has been based on gimmick games based on other IPs.

This Clix Star Trek Ship game is obviously not going to be compatible with Heroclix. Due to that, it'll have negligible support from Wizkids. It's just another IP to milk.

Essentially, if the game is compatible with Heroclix, it'll sell to PLAYERS of Heroclix and come of the fans of the IP. If it's not compatible, Wizkids will abandon support and search for another IP to buy rights to.

I was all set to pick this up at Gen-Con this year, if only in preparation for Mongoose's release of Starfleet Battles ACTA system. Then I got a look at it. Disappointing sculpts. No consistent scale between ships and the additional components were printed on some of the cheapest card stock available. Coupled with a horrible price point I decided to pass. I'll have to wait to get my Starfleet fix until the ACTA fleet boxes are released.

7 of the ships on the gallery page are from the TV series Star Trek The Next Generation or Voyager, which took place in the same time frame.

Yes and no...its amazingly well detailed, it also plays about as fast as grass grows. Unless you are a fan of overwhelming detail, or a die hard Trekkie, or both...its not a fun game.

Not sure what you guys are actually looking at. Those ships look like they are supposed to and have as much detail as you would see in the shows. I also see the Galaxy class ship from TNG. Hopefully WizKids will continue with this and expand to the other races.

I will probably be picking this up...from what I have seen of the sculpts online, they look fine to me. I've been hearing good things about the game as far as how it plays, although I found Russ's remark that the game is less of a tactical simulation and more of a strategic exercise interesting. It certainly sounds like combat is not going to be as detailed as SFB or even lighter starship combat games like Firestorm Armada.

Exactly why would anyone expect quality sculpts from WizKids? When have they ever produced figures even close to typical industry standards, much less anything above par? Speaking of not meeting industry standards, I wonder if they're still producing their figures using the same soft plastic used for glue guns?

Pirates was NOT a one-shot game, it was an expansion of their existing Pirates constructable game that had been around for 2-3 years before they touched a licensed expansion or it.

Wizkids is miniature company like GW is a game company. Both do what they need to in order to support their products, but not a whole lot more than that. I wouldn't even put them in the same segment of the industry. If you want to compare apples to apples, compare the Wizkids products to the Wizards products. You'd never take any of those models to a painting contest... but that's not what they are meant for!

It's only an error if you assume both ships are named Enterprise. As shown in TNG and Star Trek Online, retrofit Constitution classes are still in service at the same time as the Galaxy class.

Unless you mean something else, but I can't see anything aside from the blue phasers.

Edit: Then again, you COULD be referring to the shadow on the planet/moon facing towards the blue sun with a shine from another sun coming over the horizon...

Phht. They actually do say in TNG that the Constitution was turned into a museum. Probably because the class was getting really, really old and didn't fare too well, and at that point in time not many were left (apparently only a total of twelve were built).
And STO is just weird in that it includes ships from all over the Trek eras, even non-refit TOS Constitutions (which makes no sense whatsoever) or the Galaxy-X from a timeline that never happened.

But maybe the wide selection for this boardgame is intentional? It could well be that you can choose to play in different eras... they even have the original "IKS Somraw" from that one Enterprise episode in there - I guess this means they'll have the NX as well.

I'm sorta interested in that game myself now, but I would really prefer / hope for multiple ships of the same class in favor or a dozen unique classes from different timelines. Just makes it look more like a proper fleet.

The phaser emitters on the refit are at the fore/port/starboard on the primary hull not the dome. The original Constitutions fired phasers out of the dome (which were blue).

I don't remember seeing the NX as one of the ships from the pics on BGG but I didn't look at them that close.

STO is just straight weird anyway.

You're right, I found some more pics here:
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/79127/star-trek-fleet-captains

The oldest ship Fed-side would indeed be the Connie. Starfleet only brings unique vessels, whereas the Klingons have three or four of the same type on some. I think that's actually rather fitting, though! The Klingons have always been big on mass-production and using age-old ships until they fly apart, whereas the Federation churns out a new state-of-the-art class every other year.

I have to say, the painted models don't look too bad, either ...

12thRonin wrote:STO is just straight weird anyway.

Same for me. Ill probably give the game a run or two, but overall its the minis I want. Im tired of the only options for Trek ships being the old SFB designs or expensive resin kits from small companies.

For those complaining about the sculpts...take a look at the SFB sculpts...they have very little detail, so they arent any better than these.

Once upon a time...

I played a coin operated game of Star trek. You flew the ship around, shot up a bunch of stuff like Klingon shops and astroids, and the graphics were on par with Battlezone.

THIS click game to me looks a lot like what they think the new online game is about. all and including the hex gridsquares from back in the day from Starfleet battles.
http://www.starfleetgames.com/starfleetbattles.shtml

You want a real "Star trek game? Try The old one. Eventually- after you got tired of the "Chits", you got a few chances from now and again to get the ship models. (These were on par with BFG ships) and some of them, when painted up by the older grognards, were direct to table figures of the ships from the TV show. I saw one board game of this where a guy took lava rocks, and some of those styro balls painted up as planets, and they were fighting with three to five klingon players.

Didn't need the click'es to tell you you were getting pasted, the damage went in there like Battletech, and you had a bunch of engineers and other stuff to regroup your recovery, rapaires and some other stuff.

I for one would like to see some reintroduced paintable miniatures. Resin OR metal, I would like a few, for GP.

The game was pretty... uh... rabid for fanboys. There was a fight or two about that New show, called TNG, and the old one IIRC. You knew who was who when you see a game of this being played, to be sure.

The online game has a borg war going on right now. You get in a scrap with them, you are feeling it.

Don't like the Federation ship selection.

Odyssey, Intrepid, and Nova classes? How about some popular and more combat-oriented designs like the Akira, Excelsior Refit, and Defiant?

Probably be better off hitting Ebay for Star Trek Micro Machines and playing Starfleet Battles or homebrewed variants like this (click "3X+ rules" and "The SSDs") and this. Or use Starmada.

I'm pretty sure the Defiant is in there. Just a note to those picking up the game: check your components. My set was missing the fleet bases-basically markers for where your fleet comes onto the board. They aren't essential, but they're good to have. I submitted a request for replacement parts to Wizkids, hopefully it won't be a long wait.
