Subject: Re:Looking for thoughts on this color scheme
I think it looks good, the contrast between vehicle and passenger is nice, but personally, I think you could have pushed the red even more purple, I still feel it is too orange. The problem is the eye is being tricked, because the yellow is such a dominant color, it is going to give everything around it that hue as well, so pushing the red more into the blues I think would help, I think warlock purple and blood red would give a nice effect, I would do a 2 to 1 ratio.
To adress your earlier question about making rusted metal. First take a look at this rusted car;
This is the "typical" image I think that many have when it comes to rust, the orangey-red powder look, and while a cool effect, I think it would clash considerably with what you have going on with your scheme.
Then there is this type of rust;
The darker red kind, you can still see some of the orange there, but it is definitely moving more toward the red, I still think this would be too lite against the yellow.
And finally, here is the purple rust;
It is the deep, purple aged look, this I think would go really well with your scheme, and really give it a nice dark look. The whole metal part would not have to be rusted like this, but you could definitely add some of this in and it wouldn't hurt. Now as far as acheiving this effect, weathering powders would probably be your best bet. Secretweaponminiatures.com makes some really nice powders, and they have a real nice purple. If you look at this image;
The 2nd base in from the right has some of that purple rust worked into it, and is a good example of what you might try and achieve on the steel colors on your DE. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Looks hard to paint them that well, must have taken you a long time??
It took me all of 2 days to do, but I was making changes and working out ideas to do it. Normally I could do it quickly once I have what I want to do in mind. As for the troops, there are things I dont like about the gunner, which I will try to change. I have issues painting realistic looking skin tones so I normally avoid it.

I have some the the weathering powders from SWM, I may have to order a more purple one instead of the set I currently have, or look into another tamiya weathering kit, which is a glorified makeup set.

It is interesting I will say that, which was the point of this project.

Ashton
Thanks, it is hard to tell what they will look like in the end without some on model pics. I will be putting in an order for it today, and going to the FLGS to pick up a more purple red.

All together a brilliant job on them troops would love to steal the idea but I would prefer designing my own. Much more fun that way .

but it looks good none the less
I always see tau as more of a tan as opposed to a yellow. If anything I am thinking lamenters.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I finally made it to the FLGS to pick up some reddish purple. So i based my glyphs with necron abyss, then stepped up to liche purple, and finally highlighted with warlock purple. I think it pops a lot more than the orange red as mentioned before. Good thing I used a brittle super glue so I pulled the pieces apart that needed to be changed so the pilot, gunner, and such can be changed to the new colors.

My thoughts as well, and the wife likes the color change to so that is a good sign.
CommissarKhaine wrote:Nice, I like the purple accents. A whole army like this will have a very striking tabletop presence!
That is the goal. I should be able to finished them in a month or two, which is a good thing.
I put in an order for some of the violet pigment from SWM today as well so there are still some changes I will do to it to rust up the metal a bit. I figured mixing some of the terracotta I already have with it, or possibly some rust with it, it should give a nice weathered look the to bare metal sections.

Hi just stumbled into the thread, I'm interested how you wife thinks the models look now you've spent a bit more time on them. Personaly I like the scheme there are way to many people doing the standard paintjobs on dark eldar and not experimenting.

And quoting my wife "it looks like our sons poop", but she does like the purple over the red. I agree to many people are stuck on the ZOMG DE need to be dark and darker. I just wanted something unique-ish, and I think I will achieve it. Painting on the first 2 warrior squads starts tonight, so wish me luck.

I always wanted to reverse the current style of DE paintjob just to see what it would look like. Black edging lightening toward the centre of each plate.

I would be interested in seeing that myself. I could see that needing a lot of blending to make it work right.

The colour scheme reminds me of the old Action Force/GI JOE models from the eighties, especially with the pilot's uniform. That can only be a good thing!

Yes it would be, neon colors would be needed to pull it off.

Thanks
