The reason you didn't hear cries of cheese with this codex when it came out is because it's not Imperial.

I would say that right now that DE and Orks are the most balanced books out there. Both can be devistating in the right hands, crumble if you don'r know what you are doing. To the credit of both books there are also very few usless units in them. They have great balance and there is nothing over the top, but you can still win if you have skill.

DE have a lot of stuff that makes you stare at the codex and start to rant at first glance, like the high I, BS and WS of many models.

If you read a bit deeper instead of ranting you'll notice that almost every unit in the dex will fold like a pancake if attacked.

The whole DE focus is to do your damage to the enemy, and hope like hell he's not still around. If he is he'll tear you a new one in return.

The codex is nicely balanced, but takes a certain finesse to use correctly.

Ditto,
Funny thing is Phill Kelly wrote Eldar (still on teir 2), SW (still top tier except vs DE Venom Spam) and DE.

I'm in the mind set of just playing PK codexes.

And he wrote the orks codex which is just great Seriously Phil Kelly should just write them all.

Don't forget that he also wrote the Ork codex, which is still considered a competitive codex even for a 4th edition book.

I play nothing but Phil Kelly codexes (except the occasional BT game. I can't remember if he was involved with that one....)

My wife plays Eldar and Dark Eldar - both Kelly

I play Orks, Dark Eldar and Necrons - All Kelly (though Necrons had other writers as well )

If GW left 40K to Phill Kelly and Jes Godwin, and fantasy which is already ruined to the other chuckle heads, I might by more stuff from them.

Balanced....for what I think 40k should be.

Unless we're comparing them to other codices, in which case I would rate them underpowered in comparison.

Fantasy is ruined? Seems overall more balanced and less whining/annoying kids/ THAT ing guy compared to 40k where I've been playing past few months. Magic is my only niggling point with it, it's too big not to invest heavy in it, it can underperform costing your points investment to be worthless or just plain the other guy gets his lolpwnage spell off first :(.

On topic DE seem nice really, stuffs costed pretty right, they require people to think not just walk around saving on 3+ 99% of the time while ripping through other armies armour automatically. Should be the standard for codices imo, just rewrite the BA background a bit, little bit of rebalancing and just purge the GK book from existence.
And yes despite them currently being seen as underpowered, and yes some things really needs a points adjustment eldar is still a lovely codex to me, thought the orks one was good also.
