Well said Mr Gates.

The world is a poorer place as of the 05/10/2011.

RIP Steve.

Aww, this is sad news.

Apple absolutely promoted a lot of good things, odds are PCs would still be beige boxes, smartphones would still be awkward qwerty-keyboard business-only devices, tablets wouldn't exist (or would still be those horrible $2k+ hefty "microsoft rugged business bricks", and we'd still be playing CDs.

Whatever your opinion of the guy, there is no denying that the innovation he led absolutely changed the way computing was looked at, and turned it into something approachable to a lot of people rather than just to us nerds.

Pixar as well, don't forget Pixar. Every single movie that was made by them only exists because of Steve Jobs, along with potentially a lot of the CGI competitors. None of those would have happened without Toy Story, before that the animation industry thought that it would be a hugely expensive waste of time to make a film like that, especially as traditional animation was still going strong (think the Lion King).

RIP, Steve.

Wow.. this really sucks. Sad to see him go. I just hope Apple will continue to make good stuff with him gone now.

My bro in law has a lot of cash tied in Apple stock, what sucks now is the stock is gonna plummet and prolly not come back for a long time.

RIP to a great person who made a huge impact in this world.

Whether you are a mac user or not, the fact that you use technology -- you have been altered because of his work as competitors would follow suit.

I'm no mac user but he deserves great respect.

Well, if Apple did nothing else, they polarized people who use electronic adding machines (computers) into two diametrically opposed groups. Realistically, their PC vs. Mac ads only helped fuel that flame. Honestly, I think they were better at selling an image than they were at actually revolutionizing user interfaces. I found the Zune interface superior to the iPod, and still do no matter how much anyone gives me gak over it. I also prefer Gnome to either Windows OR OSX, and I OWN a Mac.

I'm just saying: You center your entire advertising campaign consisting of "I think I'm cooler than you because I own a premium priced product that does the same damn thing the one you own does," and it's no major surprise that people react strongly to it, one way or another.

His vision was still driving the creation of some of the most widely known gadgets and computers on Earth.

Hopefully, it will continue to.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

Steve Jobs was more of an owner for Pixar and not really involved in it, they had to drive out to where he lived to tell him how everything was going.

Now as to his reputation, speak no ill of the dead.

Indeed, the whole PC vs Mac thing is entirely stupid simply continuing to exist in order to provide some people a moral high ground over others.

Not everything he did was great, but he did some great things. RIP Steve Jobs.

I don't know what we owe men like Steve Jobs. I think we've paid a lot for what they gave (i.e., sold/peddled) so far, and will continue to do so. But the notion that we are seeing the closing of an era strikes me as true. It's like when Henry Ford died.

Steve jobs, regardless of whether or not you like or hate apple, was an amazing visionary for technology.

While the iPod wasn't the first, it was the defining media playback device.

The iPhone wasn't the first touchscreen phone, and it wasn't the first smartphone, it was the phone that revolutionized the smart phone industry.

The iPad wasn't the first tablet, there were a few before it, but it CREATED a current technology race that threatens even microsoft for the continuation of desktop O/S.

But I do love the article because it does state the truth.

Jobs was human. A very gifted human, but human nonetheless. He screwed up like the rest of us. Both professionally and personally.

In the shadow of the day, we can all be judged only on what we did to make our lives, and those around us a little better. We should all be so lucky to leave a legacy like mr. Jobs did.

Farewell my distant mentor, my great teacher, and my role model.

(Written from my iPad, while surfing for a new MacBook, and checking the time on my iPhone, with both iPods connected to my home theatre.)

to all the haters: if you dont have something decent and moral to say, dont say it, your not "cool" for stickin it to the man who was the leader of stickin it to the man in this era.

RIP Jobs, never liked your products, but i cant deny that you were a revolutionary and without you computers/technology might not be as advanced as they are today.

IMHO Steve Jobs is the greatest man to ever live, he created recycling. He can take one thing and turn it into years of releases.

It is sad that he has passed, but he will always be remembered in 2 ways, one by his sheep, and one by PC users that will be sad for his passing, but basically be like; meh. He was a great business man, no doubt. He just got a bit greedy IMO. You don't have years worth of updates ready before you release something. He got rich off of his sheep buying everything he put out. I honestly run a 2001 Sony VAIO as my basic computer. With minor messing with it can be a great machine. For $700 I built a super computer. Apple charges for Hipster appeal, a case is defiantly worth less than what is inside.

You can not take away the job from Steve Jobs. To do so would be disrespectful to his life. He succeeded at making an OK product at an extravagant price. There are not many companies that can claim the same. He found a niche and convinced everyone and their brother they were in that niche. He made computing almost stupid, you could actually be small of mind and work one.

In the end I will remember him as a giant amongst mere tin soldiers. He held the world in his hand for a long while, may he Rest In Peace
