Right I have base coated all of my marines. I am a bit concerned they are looking more "Iron Warrior" than "Iron Hand". With this in mind, I have revisited the colour scheme. All of my Pauldrons and Weapons will be Black, not chaos black but Chaos Black mixed with Gloss Varnish. So that the Pauldrons look more like the GW style whilst the bodies of the Marines will look more like Gabriel Santar.



I think it will work because I want some resemblance to modern Iron hands, but I don't want them to look exactly like the ones above in MkIV armour. I want the 40k ones to look like they evolved from the 30k Marines.

Furthermore I have just received my Mk1 Rhino conversion kits from MACHINATOR. At $20 a piece they are a steal and very good quality, drop him a line and ask for some and he will happily make you. Update 2;-

My guys have wire pins in their feet so I put them into a piece of Wood with lots of drilled holes. In future I will be doing all miniatures this way.



The next picture is without a flash to try and give you natural colours (sorry for blurry nature). I will be setting up my Daylight bulb and camera for better quality photo's when they are finished.



I still need to do the faces, and lenses etc but I am happy with the metallic effect and colour scheme, now more "Iron Hand" than "Iron Warrior".







The Black is Chaos Black mixed with Vallejo Gloss, it gives a nice look to the black I think and gives them the Shiny Black I wanted to link them to the 40k Iron hands.

Tomorrow is pinning day, when I pin the right arm and bolter to the main body. I have dremel ready and about 100 paperclips and some superglue. It will not be a perfect fit, so some minor filling and then some painting touchup's will be needed.

On the 12th Nov, we have a bring and buy sale, I need some spare Rhino Chassis pieces to finish off the two Rhino's. I think the Transports will take a weekend at most. Ferrus Manus is now base coated, and I am putting the final touches to Gabriel Santar.

I have 50 Steam punk resin bases being made by a friend and he showed me the prototypes last night at our 500point "Silly fun" tournament I am running. They were great quality and totally fit the Mechanicum, steampunk, pre-heresy theme.

I will be running a 150point Kill team tourney in spring between our core 16 members. This is fun as every member of the unit moves independantly, fires independantly, leadership checks independantly etc etc (no 2+ armour, no 2+ Inv, no more than 1 wound, any team you like even a tank or MC (so long as it's 150points and one wound which is unlikely for MC)). It's like Necromunda but with 40k models, A SM Scout squad with a Storm manoeuvring round a board to kill a mob of orks. It's a great way to play as splitting teams, fire and CC makes individuals standout e.g. One scout has an ML and another with a Sniper rifle make a Firesupport team, whilst the other 3 (sgt with PF) cruise around in the LSS looking for trouble. It's great fun and makes you change the way you play because every model counts.

So now I am breaking my own rules posting up updates picks, the model looks fairly crap at this scale but in real life they look really nice (90%) done. Working on the backpacks and the bases now....









Note sure about the bolter whether I should paint it gloss black..Here is my Sgt with the Black gloss (forgive the bases, it is just a base with a drilled hole to put the pin in, the final pose will be much better). This is one of my favourites already because it captures the feel of the Legion, and because it's Pre-heresy they haven't gone overboard with the bionics yet..







I tell you the macro photography makes your models look worse, I'm going back to photographing at 15cm focal range...

haha, macro ftw! Good job Mwnciboo, it turns out that we've actually gone for very similar base colour schemes, mines just a little darker.

Speaking of, I will be updating my project log as soon as I've finished these five I'm working on. Was tired of updating with nothing.

I'm impressed at the speed that you are managing to crank out the Iron hands! I'm struggling to be able to ifnish 10 by end of december :( yet I've always been a slow painter.

Good to see what you've accomplished, though I was wondering, the standard bolter colour for Iron hands is white. Are you getting rid of this idea?

Yeah, I'm going with Black. Not because I don't like white, it's just when the models were black they needed contrast. Now my models are predominantly metallic, i need an offset and white looks very close to Mithryl silver so I think Black is the way to go.

EDIT all my paints are away, my bolters have all been painted Gloss black now and look alot better, plus it shows off the right hand being mythril silver. Martyn (my base making friend) is making the bases in the next week or so, so I can finish this project off.

I normally finish these projects by varnishing the miniatures and then Dullcote them, this will stop the gloss black effect, so I am unsure what to do. I think I might varnish dullcote and then re-gloss the black bits.

The Black Bolters -



I need to do a final check on them, trim a few stray brush hairs and final highlights. Then a light wash to bring it all together and then a varnish. I am pleased with how this is going.

they look good! I really like the shine to the bolter. If I wasnt doing mine white I'd steal it.. I still may steal it!

Just wondering if you are going to go further with the bases? They look good but are a little flat.

Yes, sorry I haven't been clear about the bases. The base above is a stock one, it has drilled hole in it and I use it as a stand so the pin in the foot slots into the hole allowing it to stand. This is forgetting a feel for the finished piece and also for photography. If you look, I have used this base in lots of photo's. The actual bases are a WIP with my friend Martyn (who makes model bases and runs this website and is an all round awesome guy). He is also doing a sculpting course and I have seen some his WIP and I am very impressed.

He's doing me a special commission, at mates rates. Although to be honest i will pay full amount because the quality is amazing... I will be adding in extra details, like bolter casings and empty magazines etc on the deck plates.

I am still early days with this project, Ferrus Manus, my two Rhinos and the Contemptor to do.

I want bases painted in this style, with lots of weathering very like Brother Argo's.




UPDATE 7

Re-done alot of the eyes tonight to give them more of a Lens feel.



Also put together a Heavy Bolter Marine when I realised that I couldn't take a Multi-Melta in the Pre-heresy Era (dammit!). Anyway I like him, the heavy armour at the Leg Greaves has reinforcement (he was a 2nd Edition Devastator) so it looks like the Cog effect on Iron Hands or Techmarines. (it is difficult to see with a flash on a metal marine!)



My base coated Ferrus Manus, ready for washes, highlighting and fine detailing. But you can see where this project is heading.





So this weekend, I need to sort out the Rhino's and the Contemptor... Ready for the Iron Hands to go on campaign in January 2012.

This is the stuff of legends!!!

Another weekend, another update.

My RHINO's with the conversion kits courtesy of MACHNINATOR. I might do a mini-review here for those interested.

1st off, is it cheaper? Well i'm not sure on this one, his kits aren't expensive $20 a shot (which i think is very reasonable). A Rhino however costs some, so for me it just so happened to be cheaper to buy from MACHINATOR as I have several Rhino kits laying around. The FORGEWORLD kit is nice and probably easier to assemble (plus you get the Rhino) however you pay through the nose and it doesn't really look like the mk1 Rhino so it really misses the entire point!

2nd, easy of building. I would say on the difficulty scale it was 3 out of 5, e.g not for Novice/ Beginner but easy for a reasonably competent modeller bearing in mind the difference working in Resin. The hardest part is getting a hacksaw or Jewellers saw and cutting off the exisiting exhaust sections, once this is done it's very easy. There was very, very slight warping with the resin parts, but the good old Hot water, bend slightly, dip in cold water. It must be said that Forgeworld stuff is always warped and I have yet to receive a kit that wasn't warped, so I am not at all put out by this.

3rd Aesthetics, I really like the beefy feel of it. The extra width is like a modern rhino but the look is like a 2nd edition Rhino. So I think 5/5.

Overall, 4/5. Goes to show what a man on his own, with limited resources can produce, compare that with the FORGEWORLD effort in a studio, by Professionals yet it looks nothing like the original.

+10 MACHINATOR













So, here it is, almost done. A few more bits and fit the top and it's ready for priming and painting. Kudos to SHANEWILS and MACHINATOR for this kit.

That is one nice looking Rhino. It really fits the Theme your'e going for. I never really liked the look of the old Rhinos, but this looks really nice.

50% painted, need to put on some final detailing, glass effect on the vision slits and grab a few Iron Hands decals from somewhere (I have drawn a blank on ebay!).

Just looking at my Contemptor, I am having a crisis of conscious. I was going with a Contemptor, with Twin-Linked Autocannon and DCCW, mainly because I love Autocannons because of the Str 7, Twin-linked, and the fact it will kill light infantry, heavy infantry and pop transports. However looking at the Kheres Assault Cannon stats,

Heavy 6, Str 6, AP4, Rending

I am seriously tempted to find the 10 points and purchase one of these and run it in my 1000 point list. The reason is that the strength and the rending rule will be useful when fighting the Traitor Forces in the 30k campaign and with 6 shots I should be able to put the hurt on the traitor marines.

Your Iron hands are looking great! that new/old rhino looks just like the one I have stashed away in my carry case from over 10 years ago.
Very authentic.

In regards to the contemptor, I would seriously recommend going with the new assault cannon. You could even put two of them on there for twin linked-ness (or at least I think they become twin linked....).

Having said that I havent yet play tested that, just done some statistical wrangling.

Ferrus yes, he is staring at me across the desk, daring me to do him justice, I think i might struggle. I want to do him well, but I just don't know if i will pull it off.

No, I just wanted to do something expensive rather than on the cheap. Not because I am a SNOB but I want to do the force justice, to have a lovely looking homogenous force, not a cobbled together mish-mash. It was actually a bit deeper than this, I wanted to do force to the extent I envisaged in my head. No limits on budget or corners cut, a complete force conceived, bought and finished in one go.

There are several reasons for this;

1. I have never finished a force, my armies are open ended for further models to be added in.
2. I have never felt upto the task, ( yet lately I feel my skills have got to the point where I feel like a competent Journeyman painter).
3. I want a milestone, e.g. to test my skills and see how far I have come since starting in the hobby.

I knew that this project though only a 1000 point it would be a bit expensive and it would tick all the boxes above so it would serve.

I then thought through,"Do I really want to spend this much? Am I seeking to compromise on this project and thereby take away one of my reasons for doing this?" and I convinced myself "Well I can always sell it". My local club you can sell a force reasonably easily and I could always ebay it, so I thought sod it, take the plunge do your best. If I love it, I can keep it, otherwise if its a good standard I should make a little money on it.

EDIT I will be away for a week or so, I need to paint up some more Bear Claw Units for the 2000point Apocalypse Tournament at the weekend. Plus I need to be nice to the wife etc, so a week or so off, and my Birthday so I will be away. I should by the 1st week of December have a huge update with lots of pictures, and possibly my Contemptor and a 50% finished Ferus!

Got an unexpected day off (well I have a night Duty!) as I read my leave days wrong ! YAY....

Got alot done, on PH today ( and alot of house work done too....wife will be pleased with me.. yay the modern man).

Still need to attach the backpacks ( they are painted and done!), the Second Rhino, the Contemptor and the fine detailing, but I feel like I have broken the back of this project, over 50% done, just 2 more vehicles to do and the finishing touches to my characters. The bases are ready, I will spray them Black and they will be quick to do, because you don't need to be super neat so 1 weekend to do that, another weekend to the vehicles and then a weekend solid on Ferrus and Gabriel and I will take it from there.

Alot more to do on these, I need to do the Power Weapon in obsidian (like a glass effect) but I cannot work it out so I'm off to the Painting Forum to get some advice..

UPDATE

Okay I have been quiet but not idle.

Here are the bases, cleaned them up, washed and dried them.



Black undercoated and base painted.





Now using pigment powders, adding rust etc as a counter point to the very dark and metallic Marines.



I need to paint the base edges a nice neat Chaos Black. Final step is heavy scrub to remove alot of the Red rust powder, a light dry brush with a blusher brush with graphite powder, to take the edge off the reddish hues and to add some metallic highlights.

Should have all the Infantry completed and based by Friday morning.

Ferrus Manus, is coming along nicely, so is the second Rhino. The next item and final item on the list is the Contemptor Dreadnought. This will be my final one model and I aim to finish him completely (Base is already done) by 20th December. Then my army is ready for the Mid-January Pre-heresy stuff, and I can concentrate on Ferrus Manus and Gabriel Santar so I can do them justice. I also need to get some FW Iron Hands Decals.

So my bases are on! Yay... Some nice shots for you to enjoy, I still need to do the very final detailing (especially on the Space Marines without Helmets) and also add detail to Gabriel Santar and Ferrus Manus. Anyway here are the pictures...









Force Photograph



On going I have the RHINO, and the CONTEMPTOR. I am motoring along now. Once done I will put this Project to bed, and my next one has been bubbling in the background. On my Birthday got some bits and bobs, and bought an IG Army off him for £80. (3 x Leman Russ, 1 x Demolisher, 1 x Basilisk, 1 x Manticore, 1 x Sentinel Squadron, lots of Infantry (cadians) and Kasrkin........I have stripped them and they are ready for painting. Anyway here is a teaser...



Urban Camo force, all magnetised (the Vehicles) so I can put mechanicum symbols on them or alternatively Chaos symbols (One force, two options!). Plus it will be also be my IMPERIAL NAVY rescue force based around Vendettas and Valkyries. So once I wrap this project up another Blog will be started!

You are SO much faster than I am, hah! i like those bases, though the few on the right do seem a little too rusty. Unless you're going for that effect.

Thanks, Kalaan. The bases picture was a half finished one, all of the bases were then weathered. I then cleaned it off with White Spirit, then I washed it with Badab Black to take off the Red effect and then painted the edges black. I like the contrast of the red rust effect versus the Crisp Metal and Black of the Marines.

I will put more pictures of our Lord Ferrus, up here once he's nearly done. At the moment I need to crack on with the vehicles and then come back to Ferrus, trust me by 31st Dec this will be done. Then the IG project starts,

The Ebay Ferrus is quite nice looking! Having a primarch for a chaos legion just feels right! I have one for each of my legions weather or not they are alive or in their own bodies in the fluff I plan at some point to make a piece of terrain out of them that makes them look like the are holographs.. going to be an in depth build for sure!

Okay my final models, the Contemptor, the last Rhino and Ferrus.





To save a bit of cash, I am magnetizing his right Arm and using my Custom Autocannon off my Bear Claw Army, to save buying a Kheres Assault Cannon. It could also be a Twin Autocannon, if i need to save points. I have used the money I saved to buy Decals from Forgeworld...



1st Rhino done..



These will be used on my Troops and Vehicles to put the final nice touches before I Dullcote them ready for battle. The Pre-Heresy Club Tournament has been put back till February so I have 10 days to paint this another Rhino and put my final detailing on Ferrus Manus...Talking of which....



He's a good deal bigger than the rank & file and I need about 2 - 3 hours to do his face and the last final detailing, but the low cost of the miniature I am quite happy with the results. I tried to do a marble effect on his base, I'm not sure if it worked, I might try to bring it out some more.

It's all looking awesome, except in my opinion the auto/assault cannon on the Contemptor. It just looks oversized and crude, and the barrels don't seem to be aligned (though that could be the photo).

It's such a nice forge-worldy, expensive prestige army. With all the money you've already sunk into it, is £7.50 really going to make the difference?

Maybe you are right, I am looking at buying one off Ebay, as I write this. It also compromises my fundamental premise at the start of this project, consider your criticism taken on board and actioned.

Hey Hazzer, had a look at your work. I particularly like your Orks, they have that ramshackle thing down to a Tee. I hate seeing Orks with pristine paint jobs like they have just come out of the Salon. Orks are dirty, fungus with a vicious attitude. Kudos, I have voted on some of your gallery pics too.
