Ailaros wrote:How do you blot on the rust color and the mithril silver, with a sponge? Can you provide a link to how you do weathering?

Hello Ailaros!

I am afraid I cant provide a link right now since I have not searched for tutorials online for this myself. But I am sure there are loads. I used the forge world Imperial Armor: Model Masterclass volume one as inspiration in my work. While its not a perfect tutorial, it gives a lot of tips and inspiration on what can be done with oil paints and pigments.

I assume by mithril silver you mean the chipping. I mixed dark brown and black, then added it with a sponge on places that I thought would suffer from ware and tear. I then filled in some of the biggest blotches with chainmail, using a detail brush.

For the rust I used a airbrush, regular brush and a toothbrush. First I mixed some rust pigment with burnt umber oil paint and thinner, then I flicked it on the model using the toothbrush. After this I gave a generous spray of thinner on the model using my airbrush. Some small cleaning was needed, I used a regular brush to remove excess that didnt seem to be in the right place.

Hope this helps, I am happy to answer any additional questions

Cheers,
Marko

Here we go again

I painted some VC Banshees for selling purposes. It was hard to get good pics of the model and I am not happy on how they look, but I need something so heres what I got. I guess I need to try again later. I think the dynamics of the model make it a hard piece to photo for an amateur.

Banshee 1

Banshee 2, painted with the same theme

Also working on 2 cairn wraiths, WIP

Took some ideas from GirlPaintings wraith tutorial, grabbed my airbrush and attempted a similar effect on the robe. It was fun to work with an airbrush on these models. I really like toying with that thing and I think ill try to use it more on infantry sized models. Will need a lot of practicing though.

Thats it for now, should have some ready cairn wraiths in later today.

My 2 cairn wraiths done, next some fatties.... then more Vc me thinks

Any suggestions on the airbrushing? The first infantry models where I used the airbrush to a larger effect.

Good and clean painting on both wraiths and banshees. I like the color choices and the muted feel especially on the wraiths.

I guess you could make the lighter green appear more on the robes. Now it looks like it is only visible on the lower areas of the robe and not at all on the borders of the outer robe in the middle of his back. I think it would make the effect look better if the lighter green would be visible also there.

Nice basing on all of the VC figs.

Thanks for the feedback Metsuri!

Do you mean that the lighter green should start higher on the model in general or just at the back? I think adding some color to the model might make it more striking as a table top model.

I wanted to give the new GW turfs a testdrive So far they seem nice, a bit shiny though. Surprisingly much easier to work with than the army painter turfs. They were a real pleasure.

I would start the lighter green at around the same height, but use it to distinguish the different layers of the cloak. Currently the different layers are lost, at least on the pictures. This would bring some more things for the eye to catch. It require applying some masking to figure before airbrushing though.

The tufts look good, I haven't used either Armypainters or GWs product. I have some silfor tufts, which are quite nice also.

Thanks again for the feedback Metsuri, now I understand what you mean... it makes sense.

I didnt try to do that, but the suggestion is quite logical and I guess it would have been the standard thing to do with a regular brush. To be honest I didnt even think about it this time

I have heard that AP's turf is repacked sifor. Not 100% sure though. So far, the form of the GW turfs has been pleasing and the turfs are easy to pick of the surface they have been attached to making working with them a pleasure. Compare to silfor prices they are a bit steep but when it comes to GW-hobby and terrain supplies, these are top notch!

Currently working on a Necromancer. I am trying to do the wraith trick with a different color and mix airbrushing and hard painted highlights. Interesting to see how it will turn out. I just took some fast pics, better ones of the ready model. But I hope the idea comes through anyway. I am guessing I should go as light as possible, but with the area I have to work with its a bit challenging to go lighter with my skill level.

Great seeing you here too MakeH, and even on the modeling section.

Good looking stuff as well. I would also like to get training on some airbrush stuff.

The Chimera is my favorite, really digging on that weathering. The IA Masterclass sure gives some nice tips. Not to say you haven't done good job too.

If anything to add, I would go for more smoother blending on some areas (some of those ogre's skins, banshees white cloak)

Keep em' coming

Hello Northen and thanks for the Comments!
Painting tanks is really a new experience but it has been really cool and eye-opening so far I would just wish that the IA Masterclass was a bit more detailed in its tips Currently have to do a lot of experimenting and some guessing but ofc its part of the general learning curve so its all in good fun. I really love the cadian ash waste chimera myself and was heartbroken to give it away

Smoother blending is currently out of my league BUT, I have been wondering if I could cheat and "smoothen" things by learning to use a glaze medium.

BTW, the necromancer is finished and is my favorite model so far ill post some pics of it soon once I crack the lightbox open!

Ok, so the Necromancer took it upon himself to get ready. To my surprise I noticed that I like it the most from the models I have painted so far!

I think combining airbrushing and traditional hard highlights on different parts looks fine, what do you think? It was the thing I was curious in this "experiment". I like the end result.

Without further rambling, some pics:

Painting some Vc but also doing work on the "main project"

I used some basic models to build a few characters. I am trying to do something that can be used either as characters or command models, depending on the current need.

Nice work, the blending of the horse carapace was done with airbrush I assume.

The metal parts look a bit too clean, maybe a wash of dirt and/ or rust to get some more character to them?

The green flames bring really nice contrast to red as well as the bone and dark cloth, you've done really nice choice of colors.

Thanks for the comments Metsuri!

I agree on the metals, I need to learn to do some varied effects to add character to it.

I tried to add different colors with the hope of making it stand out more as a special unit on the table top. I hope its not too "cartoony" and colorful though?

Also, I am not super happy with the flames, I think I will try to add some glow on the next box of wraiths I do.

The quest for metals is one that I've been on for several years now, they offer so many possibilities with washes, inks and weathering powders that one can study and try thing infinitely.

The colors are muted enough that the unit doesn't seem cartoony at all, the flames would look a lot more convincing with a bit of object source light. It will be tricky to do in some places, but I think it would be worth it.

Big thanks for the feedback.
I have some ideas on the next unit, ill definitely try something on the metals and experiment on some OSL for the first time.

Awesome stuff, I love the shading - I find the green a little too sickly on the mounted Wraith.

Thanks for the comment Tortured-Robot. I really enjoy working with the airbrushing so practicing shading is fun. I will definitely try to include it more and more in the work I do!!

Concerning the flames, I used fluo colors wich are really bright, but I am not yet happy on how they turned out. Flames are something ill put my effort into improving with the next batch of wraiths.

Cheers

Finally got the pics on my computer

Based on feedback gotten from the single wraith, I am going to try a few things differently on the next unit. I will paint the black cloth with a different technique, try to liven up the metal and experiment on some OSL on the flames. The flames are something I need to experiment on anyway, since I think they are the biggest thing that needs fixing in my models. So new things for me, some experimentation. Try to find out if I can learn some new tricks. Dont know when Ill get to them though.

Here we go, unit pic

Thats it for now. Next ill continue my fatty project, theres 20is ogres waiting for some skin.

My so called real life kicked me in the balls and put me off painting for a while but im more or less back... I dont have much to show but felt like I needed to post something to update this old thing. So here we go.

I didnt have my lightbox at hand so pics are not that good. But I will get better ones of the vargheists once I get them done. For the WIP pics they are fine though, the ogres not so much.

Okey, so some pics of a few vc models. These are 100% airbrushed so far. Practice practice... I have gone in with the brush already, but no wip pics of that. Trying to practice airbrushing infantry models so I guess monstrous infantry is the place to start.

Tried to was the models with my AB, didnt work out as planned

Also building more cars for the ogres!!

....and a bit of skinny folks to go with the fatties

Thank you for the comment Mordain. I am growing fond of the vargheist, the end result was fine but the experimenting with AB and washes was not very successful.

I have a few razorbacks, that should be a fun exercise with the AB
