Has anyone else read Imperial Glory
http://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/Imperial-Glory.html
pretty Grimdark but does at least try and tell the story from the rather brutal Ork perspective as well as the humans - quite intriguing I found it

A rational ork follows rational ork behaviors.
It would be very irrational of an ork to behave according to human rationale.
I agree.

A rational ork is an ork dat is busy trying to be the biggest and the best. And orks grow best under unde the cannons of the enemy so they want war. The source eludes me atm but i believe their was a piece of fluff mentioning that the ork juviniles on armageddon where as big as a average ork elsewhere. All has to do with beeing engineered to be a biological weapon.
Also ork's do plenty things when not at war
Hunt the biggest and nastiest beasts
Build the fastest bike, trukk etc
Race them to prove yours is faster
Sabotage the transport of an rival ork
Try to become the biggest
Attack other clans because they are not proper orks
Kick, order smaller orks arround
Smaller orks kick and order grots arround
Basicaly anything wich proves they are the biggest baddest ork they will do.

I know not paying attention is dakka's national pasttime, but still... noone's said this.
Only that everything they do even out of war is geared towards starting a new war, getting ready for the next war, making the next war better, and/or keeping oneself fit/non-rusty for the next war.

Wow, it's not often someone posts something that I'm completely, 100% in opposition to! But again, I guess it is a personal thing.

Well, as Da Butcha says, I think this may just be a result of that being all that the current codecies are focused on. Without there being any other information, we don't really know either way. Personally, I think it detracts from the character of the Orks (as I like to imagine them), making them less comical, whimsical, and characterful, making them more like a kind of mindless 'Tyranid-lite'. But again, that's just my own preference, perhaps many people do indeed prefer that perception of orks.
Mr Morden, would you care to share any details on how the Orks are portrayed in that book?

Not everything they do is geared towards war. Everything they do is geared towards having fun. The most fun they get is from fighting. But besides fighting they also find pleasure in driving as fast as they can or making the biggest explosion they can.
So basicaly orks try to have as much fun as they can. One of the things they do to have fun is war but that is not the only thing.

The sections dealing with the orks follow one "new born" ork in particular and try to show how it sees the world, as its instincts guide it to food, weapons and asserting dominance over others as it rises in power to becoem a Warboss. Its very much grounded in the present view of the Orkoids - although there is very little comedy in this section - or especially later with clashes with the Imperial forces and their dependants......not nice. Also it could be said that this is the orkoids at their most basic as there are no Klans or other organisations to deal with - all the original orks were killed in the space ship crash and those in the novel are grown from the resulting spores.
As I said if you are into Orks - its a good read - it does give them a scary, brutal vibe that will work for some and not for others.

We would ask "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is present does it still make a noise?" when what we should be asking is "Do Red ones go faster?".

There's no need, you're just flat out wrong. The only motivation an Ork has to do anything is war. Making a trukk faster is so it's faster in a battlefield, making an explosion bigger is so it will kill more things when it fights.

Also mhe explosion being bigger makes it louder, and thus makes the war more exciting.
Fun is War; War is Fun. Lets go krump sum 'umies!
