Gun Mage
In the Chaos Wastes, Killing the Chaos scum of the north

I played a game using my friends tau against my other friend using my tau friends brothers nids.
I had:
24 fire warriors
1 crsis suit commander with one body guard
2 railhead
12 kroot
2 broadsides
He had:
deathleaper
hive tyrant
genestealers
lots of guant (both kinds, but mainly the CC ones)
gargoyles
we played objectives, it was a draw, with his guants lurking on one, my kroot holding another, and every damn thing blasted of the other

Kroot, Hammerheads, Piranhas, Crisis suits, Broadsides, firewarriors, pathfinder.
Those are the only units that should feature in your list if you would like to win.

Personally I'm going to be running an ethereal, shadowsun, a ton of fire warriors, some devilfish, some hammerheads, some stealth suits and a few death rains (the contents of 3 Battleforces, 2 Skyray boxes, Shadowsun and an Ethereal).
Though this is for 3 reasons:
People keep going 'don't use an ethereal' so I want to.
I like the idea of lots of S5 shots.
I'm cheap.
Ultimately I don't expect to break any records but I reckon I should do alright in casual play.

There's a reason not to take ethereals. They're super expensive in points, do nothing, and your army runs away when they die.

Some things to buy should include but are not limited too:
2 Shas'El/O
6 Crisis Battlesuits
12 Shield Drones
24 Firewarriors
3 Devilfish
6 Broadsides
1 Hammerhead
2 Piranhas
8 Pathfinders
Pretty much everything else is optional and heavily dependent on playstyle, tons of dudes will suggest Kroot/Hounds/Snipers etc and if used correctly all can be effective for different situations.
I wouldn't go that far. Most of those things are heavily dependent on playstyle, especially shield drones, piranha, and firewarriors. I only use 12 firewarriors at 1500, no shield drones, and no piranhas. Also why would you buy the pathfinders instead of just putting pulse carbines on firewarrior models. They are cheaper.
I would change your list to:
1 battleforce
1 HQ suit
5 crisis suits
1 skyray box
2 broadsides
Everything after THAT is dependent on playstyle and that will give you a decent force to put down to then really decide how you want to play.
Playing Tau is like going to prison, do what vets do, or you are going to have a hard time sitting after games for a couple months.
Can't give new Tau players freedom to experiment, poor bastards will quit before they start!

"AM are bunch of half human-half robot monkeys who keep tech working by punching it with a wrench And their tech is so sophisticated that you could never get it wrapped it out" thing a LITTLE to seriously. It also goes "Tau tech is so awesome I wish I was Tau and not some stupid Human" thing.

I lol'd hard at that!
But it's completely true. Tau have an outdated codex, and there are really only 1 or 2 ways you can still win with them. The grizzled 'Vres have it figured out!

It's a different mindset to get into isn't it.
Kind of... you forces are precious almost.
I'm used to Dark Eldar and Skaven, both of which are very much meat-to-the-grinder forces
