Lol, Barksdale, you claim to see wasted points in my list (choosing to ignore the link that explains things) then tout triple grenade launcher vets?

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

HWS can be pretty brutal when played with support from a CCS (even better when that CCS is Creed and Kell, but that gets expensive). However if I was running a pure 2k shooty IG list it would probably look something like:
CCS (Creed and Kell)
1x lascannon
Chimera
CCS
2x lascannons
Chimera
PCS
2x autocannons
Chimera
30 man blob
3x lascannons
commissar
PCS
2x autocannons
Chimera
30 man blob
3x lascannons
commissar
3x HWS
Autocannons
Vendetta
Vendetta
Manticore
Manticore
This actually leaves you with 50pts spare if I have done my maths correctly.
So although there are only 8 AV12 chassis on the table, you get 15 lascannons (with the 50pts spare you could take that up to 18) and 6 of them are Twin-linked...while orders make your HWS more reliable. Also get 13 Autocannons. The lack of accuracy doesn't make much difference when you have all these on so many different units. Do it the IG way...Attrition. Blobs can screen vehicles and with Kell holding the Standard if you deploy properly you can keep Morale/Pinning re-rolls on everything.
Now I don't play IG and probably never will, but I have faced them plenty and it's the number of shots not the quality that scares me. To this end you could even lose Creed and Kell and just add more HWS or something.

In regards to my post, the threat comes not from essentially from the 3gl but from the ml. It requires different tactics when played. As stated there, this choice of loadout depends on what the rest of list looks like. You'll also notice that I 'tout' triple melta and triple plasma, again depending on what the rest of the list looks like.
This is a thread about long range guard options in the guard codex. The long range shooting in your list consists of two 60 point autocannons and two hydra autocannons. Your list is not as awful as some I have seen but it is definately a random off topic post because of this. All it does is shamelessly promoting your blog. There are ways to improve but you can make your own thread if you want to hear how.

OP: The best long range support unit you'll find in Troops is the Heavy Weapon Team, but I hesitate to recommend those to anyone.

+1 Odorofdeath.
If you build an army around heavy weapon squads, they work better. So that means spamming 5-10 missile squads (15-30 missile launchers) with multiple CCS or creed to give them all orders and increase their accuracy, maybe a lord commissar bubble to improve their leadership and discourage them running off the table.
It would be an all-or-nothing kind of army, though, because of the lack of mobility and the vulnerability to assaults.

36 Multi-laser shots are firing also. I think people are confused about just how far long range has to go. You don't need 48" for your shooting when you generally have armies deploying 24" away from each other.
Meanwhile, my list is completely mobile. Have fun taking objectives with Heavy Weapons Team spam. In addition, there are other lists than just transport lists that can compete, and three str6 shots do just as well as three str7 or 8 shots against marines on foot (who always have their cover anyway).

From a true 'troops' point of view, you really only have 2 choices.
1.Blobbed squads with 5 AC/lascannon. gives you a chance for TL, but costs alot to work best. and a huge footprint.
2. HWS. Fragile and pricey. needs more points spent on other choices to work better. but, has a smaller footprint!
from an overall codex point of view, i'd have to say 2 hydras and 1-2 Manticore
is the perfect all comers set up.
all of this is imho.
