Actually it could be considered a remake of a remake...

Read the plot of the original: In 1921 a field expedition in Egypt discovers the mummy of ancient Egyptian prince Im-Ho-Tep, who was condemned and buried alive for sacrilege. Also found in the tomb is the Scroll of Thoth, which can bring the dead back to life. One night a young member of the expedition reads the Scroll out loud, and then goes insane, realizing that he has brought Im-Ho-Tep back to life. Ten years later, disguised as a modern Egyptian, the mummy attempts to reunite with his lost love, an ancient princess who has been reincarnated into a beautiful young woman. Sound familiar? It's much closer to the 1932 version and that's the one Universal kept referencing when the Frasier version was released.

Aye... Automatically Appended Next Post: My only memory of SK1 was trying to figure out why Chinese apparently counts as Egyptian.
I guess it's because Hollywood has trouble with the idea of more than 2 races.

Something being only one of Boris Karloff's most famous roles is actually completely irrelevant to almost everyone, funnily enough.
I dare say that most everyone would, like me, be aware that a lot of films of greatly varying quality were made quite some time ago that featured mummies doing whatever. Unless they were specifically informed that The Mummy was a remake on the time of its release, and being huge fans of Brendan Frasier or something they retained that information, I doubt many people would be aware that one particular movie about mummies was the basis for Fraser vehicle.
Thankyou for answering my question, but the attitude in which you pretend it's somehow remarkable that I'm not deeply knowledgeable of old horror movies is quite unnecessary.

Considering how many people are aware of the "Universal Monsters"(which includes Karloff's Mummy, Lagosi's Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Lon Cheney Jr.'s Wofman, and Karloff's bolt-neck Frankenstein's Monster), it's a fair assumption that people were aware it was a remake. They also made a fair amount of mentions to it on release. It's not a far leap to believe even non-affectionados are familiar with even old movies that are considered classics without having actually seen them. But then, they're classics in America and not necessarily Australia. I apologize for assuming that was the case.

I think it's more that people would be aware of the classic Universal Monsters, and aware the mummy was one of those, but not aware that this particular movie was a re-make of a specific film, and not just a new film based on an old monster.
And yeah, fair enough that they made a fair bit about it being remake when it was remade. I probably heard that very thing when The Mummy was released, but that was 12 years ago, I think most people would likely have forgotten that by now.
I apologize for assuming that was the case.
Don't worry about it, I was too short with you and should apologise. Sorry.

sebster wrote:Among the list of people who regularly play roles in which they slaughter loads of extras for often vague reasons, I think Dwayne Johnson is a hell of a lot better than most. He's pretty charismatic, and pretty damn funny. His cameo in Be Cool was far and away the funniest thing in that movie, and Welcome to the Jungle was way more fun than it had any right to be.
That said, like everyone else my first thought was 'there was second Scorpion King?' A quick look on IMDB shows me that The Rock, nor his elbow, were in either The Scorpion King 2 or The Scorpion King 3.
I guess Mr Johnson much prefers making really crappy family comedies these days.

Was The Mummy a remake?
Agreed, he was the only funny thing in that movie I think. Which sucked because Get Shorty was pretty funny.

Yeah, he really stood out amongst an otherwise really terrible movie. I don't know what happened when they were making that movie, but I felt like they were originally supposed to be making fun of how superficial the production of a pop song was, but somehow everyone involved took it seriously, so when the superstar producer said 'I've added a blues guitar' and everyone involved took it seriously, and pretended that really was genius. Weird.

Was The Mummy a remake?
Yes... Well, if you consider having the same name and basic concept/story structure of a 1932 and a 1959 film enough to qualify as a remake.

Anyway, speaking of Scorpians, Mummies, and kings... does anyone remember the death scene from The Mummy 2?
The "nooooooooooooo" guy swooping in at an awkward time? I can't find the clip.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable. |
