I miss being able to field vanilla Captains without comparatively gimping yourself. You can be a good leader and a force multiplier for your men without pulling one hundred suits of TDA out of your ass.

Those were moronically OP...

For Space Wolves:
-True Grit was cool, and I can totally understand why they took it out, but that was what I missed the most when the new Dex came out.
-Never really took 'em, but I think it would be cool to get Leman Russ tanks back... more options never hurt anyone haha
-Healing Balms and Herbs were awesome, I wish Wolf Priests still fulfilled an Apothecary role, because I would field them all the time if they did
-Army-wide Stubborn equivalent (not a huge loss)
-Blood Claws... that is, them having any reason to be fielded over Grey Hunters

For Tyranids:
-Good God... cheap Fexes, taking Broodlords as cheap HQs, being a competitive force...
-Overall customizability, there used to be way more options, and they were worthwhile - probably somewhere around 80% of the current Nid biomorphs are useless or detrimental (and still cost points to "upgrade"!)
-The Red Terror! So cool!
-However, I don't miss the old Synapse rules. That was crippling for me because at the time I only had 3 Tyranid Warriors and 2 Zoanthropes to cover that.

And horribly broken long fangs, rune priests and grey hunters just don't do it for ya? /jest.

Actually, they don't! Long Fangs never appealed to me in the first place, and I'm not really big on psychic stuff. I liked that Rune Priests were support guys as opposed to walking whirlwinds of destruction. Grey Hunters getting True Grit and close combat weapons made charging or not charging more of a strategy, and a little riskier. I also liked Blood Claws actually being cheaper than GH so there was a half decent reason to use them.

I miss the old Divine Guidance. I miss how Acts of Faith were rolled for. I miss the old Acts of Faith system altogether. I miss the Blessed Weapon. I miss the old cost for Heavy Flamers in Battle Sisters Squads. I miss not feeling like I have to take a Battle Conclave to avoid getting slaughtered... not that I had Battle Conclaves to begin with. I miss my Celestian retinue. I miss the old Shield of Faith.

I don't miss the cost of Seraphim. I don't miss twin-linked pistols on Seraphim instead of what we have now. I don't miss the cost of Retributor and Dominion heavy and special weapons, respectively.

. . . Why am I playing with the new dex, anyways? It's not like I go to tourneys or play at stores, and my opponent's fine with me using the WH dex... Oh, now I remember. It's so I can use the Battle Conclave minis I spent over a hundred dollars on. Enh, I can use the Crusaders proxies from Reaper Minis as Veteran Superiors with Praesidium Protectivae and power weapons, the Death-Cult Assassins as... Um... I dunno, Death-Cult Assassins, maybe? And my Uriah Jacobus proxy as an Inquisitor - ooh, and maybe use some proper Crusader minis as Crusaders in her retinue! Mmmm... This could be FUN!

Edit: Oh, and I REALLY miss taking loads of Sisters squads and having them be highly useful against my opponent's footslogging Marines.

Edit again: The reason you didn't see Book of St. Lucius is because I never used it until I started reading up on Sisters of Battle tactics on this site. So I had the BoSL in only 1 or 2 games, and always forgot to use it.

I miss the old Guard Codex's 'Doctrines'. Loved building lore-based forces. Always wanted to do a full Mordian army using some of the rules in the Codex, have the models on square WHFB bases and line 'em all up in their squads/platoons.

If there is something I miss from 40k in general it's the ancient 'Overwatch' rule. It was a silly rule, I suppose, but there's nothing like having a Tyranid army move into range of massed Guard lasguns and being able to cry "Overwatch!" and start shattering the 'nid units. That is until Genestealers appear from behind your force and rip them apart...

SM: I miss Chapter traits. Much prefer that the chapter fights a certain way rather than having to use special characters. Hope GW brings this back and fixes the system if it had problems in the last dex

Tyranids: Where to begin. Customization was awesome (yes some biomorphs were go to and others useless but GW should have fixed it rather than dump it). Warriors being useful as the general synapse for the army and having a variety of roles. EW or make T5 2W. Hormaguants having a 12" charge (and this could be done without them being called beasts and not being able to go to second stories). Biovoes having three mine types. Carnifexes having a lot of options (and the pieces in the kit - now useless)(they were to cheap but are now way to costly for what you get). I miss a codex that didn't have a tervigon - what a stupid concept. I miss the Hive Tyrant being the big badie. I miss not having special characters.

In terms of actual gameplay, the only thing I really, really noticeably miss from older Blood Angels codices is the ability of Chaplains to suppress the Death Company's rage, making them a beastly unit that was actually useful.

Otherwise, I just miss little things from a fluff standpoint.

1) BA Captains not being able to take artificer armour, when every other modern SM army can, is a grotesque insult. Blood Angels are master artisans, sporting some of the most beautiful and well-crafted wargear of any chapter. We have gleaming, golden Sanguinary Guard, who sport the most elaborate of artificer armour, complete with full-sized decorative angel wings, intricately moulded death masks, wrist-mounted Angelus boltguns and torso armour designed to simulate Adonis figures (including lovingly sculpted nipples!). And it's not just a recent thing, either. Dante, Tycho, Mephiston, the Honour Guard, infernus pistols, and, yes, our Captains... Blood Angels have always been snappy dressers. And now GW's telling me that my non-Terminator Captains have to stick with power armour? No. NO. That is NOT right, and that is NOT fair. I know I can always just paint it gold if I really want to. But I'll still know I'm living a lie. And that's a kind of hurt that stays with you.

2) The older methods for taking Death Company were far more characterful. In 3rd Ed, we rolled a D6 for every foot-squad in the army. On 4-5, you had to remove one model and place it in the DC. On a 6, you did the same and then rolled again for that squad. It was a total pain, but it added a touch of unpredictability and a real sense of character to the army. As did having every unit roll a D6 at the start of each turn and rushing towards the nearest enemy on the roll of a 6...which was also a total pain (poor Devastators). Getting bonus DC with your Chaplains was nice, too. In 4th Ed, we simply took one DC for every foot-squad in the army. Not as characterful as before, but still pretty neat. I've gotta say, I definitely do not want to go back to those days. Our current, sensible rules for taking DC are very welcome, even if they do lack the character of the old rules.

3) Moriar the Chosen. Being able to take multiple DC dreadnoughts is enormously preferable to having one DC dread special character, but I still miss the guy. Plus, he made far more sense, fluff-wise. Far, far more sense. I just find it hard to buy the idea that the Blood Angels would hand over some of their most prized, sacred and valuable vehicles to the command of frothing lunatics who will eventually end up as much a danger to their allies and themselves as they are to their opponents. Very hard to buy. If a DC marine loses the ability to fight unaided, let Astorath "fix" the problem. It's harsh, and it deprives them of an honourable death, but it's certainly a better idea than giving them a walking tank with close-combat capabilities. Moriar being a one-off made far more sense. Still, I'm not gonna complain. 11 dreadnoughts in one FOC? Yes, please!
