Tau because I learned back in 4th how to play 40k using my friend's Tau.

I picked black templars because I was raised Roman Catholic and I'm also Portuguese. Crazy space Catholics are not far off from a family history of crazy seafaring Catholics.

Black Templar:

The whole Knights Templar thing.

They are fanatics, beholden to nobody, probably the biggest force of marines out there.

The original "Emperor's Champion" and still going strong.

Black and White with a Germanic cross is just stylish...

Ultramarines. Space romans? Looks good? Intelligent enough to know when to back up, or call in back up? Heaviest infantry available? Huge shields? Sign me up!

GKs? Well, one part bandwagon, one part because I liked the "At any cost, we will win. We MUST win." dedication of the force, and while I have no particular love for the "Knightly Knights of the Knight Knight" fluff (Which in my mind clashes entirely with things like ruthlessly purging the men who fought and died beside you the day before, skulking about like assassins in the dark, and being the Inquisitions garbage men in general...As I said, I don't mind it, but the apparent clash in mindset is hilarious to me.) I always have had a soft spot for the foremost defenders against the undead or demons, in this setting in particular, where there is not usually such a stark "This side is good...and this one is bad."

IG...Where else can I set up a "Noble house militia" army and slap my family coat of arms all over everything? There is also something to be said of men who get a rifle, a piece of metal to strap to their chest, go out and fight the biggest and baddest that can be thrown against them...and come home alive. (Goes double for those who have done so NOT in a tabletop wargame.)

Steadfast Grey Hunter

Back in the day, Space Wolves could one hand bolters (True Grit) which made me want to make a model with a bolter and bolt pistol as kind of a desperado dual gunslinger kind of guy (I was 14!) Later on, the full awesomeness grew on me and I stuck with em through the years of semi functional codexes, with a small detour into the 13th Company back when the Eye of Terror dex was legal. Then I heard my beloved wolves were getting and update, so I threw em back together, slapped some paint on plastic... and ended up with 30 nigh useless Blood Claws.

I'm only just now getting back into the swing of things, dusting up Grey Hunters to replace the less effective Blood Claws when I'm not converting Leman Russes for my IG.

I always liked legends, architectual style and overall feel of ancient Egypt. I originally wanted to join my friends in WHFB choosing, of course, Tomb Kings. By the time I finally got motivated enough they decided they need a dramatic change and all went out to start 40K Armies. So I had to do the same. Still craving for skeleton / tomb king army - I immidietly chose Necrons, especially since the rumors of new Codex were already in the air. I played few games with old codex, and liked the overall feel and tactic of the army.

Funny how thing turn out, I wanted Tomb Kings and with new Codex I eventually got what is indeed Space Tomb Kings I'm happier than ever and with this new vast background I can finally come up with my own fluff for my own royal dynasty

If I had to choose a second army (I do have some CSM) It would be SCM Thousand Sons. Well... due to their egypt stylish connotations in appearance and their fluff. I love Thousand Suns fluff and how it would go well with fighting against my fellow Space Wolves player

Grey Knights because Inquisitor Lord Fyodor Karamazov. Also love the contrast between the Knights and the Inquisition. One is the Men In Black with laser halberds and awesome armor, their bosses are insane religious fanatics with a god complex and about as much influence.

How an Inquisitor (best word ever, by the way) would send the Grey Knights on to a planet lost to deamons, then if things are looking grim would go Alderaan on said planet without even thinking twice about it.

And the fact that the Knights would survive that...

Necrons because Metallic space zombies older than the chaos gods just emerging from ancient slumber to reap the galaxy of biologic life for their own sadistic and grimdark gods. Atleast that is the fluff as I knew it 5 years ago when I first heard of them.

Greco-Roman, and while there are some references to the Greeks (Like sergeant chronus, or I dunno, that big upsidedown omega symbol plastered over everything.) there's a huge emphasis on the "Roman" side of the equation.

See: Battlebarges "Octavius" and "Caesar", names with the following scuttling around "Augustus" "Cassius" "Cato" "Sicarius", repeated references in BL books to Gladii being the close combat weapon of this particular group of power armored lunatics, and the standard of grooming that results in a slight rarity in Ultramarines with big ol soupcatchers under their helmets.

Minotaurs would be the marines with the emphasis on the "Greco-" side.

Well, it's not that basic, but is kinda true.

I originally took a look at the DE codex because the army being the only one to field female units with good models. The SoB looked way to butch for my tastes. From there I fell in love with the fluff, since till that point my knowledge of DE was very limited. So the female aspect got me in, the rest kept me.

I only started 40k about 6 months ago and I picked Blood Angels for their background story and after a few hours of google/forum browsing different colour schemes for Blood Angels as I HATED the pure bright red of the GW BA's (Thankyou Eggroll, your my painting inspiration).

They had cool Loyalist fluff, but had a taint that threw on a cool dark side to them which I found most Standard Codex Marine chapters lacked.

I wont tell you right away, You have to read to find out. Mwa ha ha!
All my friends were getting into the game, and I already was in my FLGS every week so I took a look at the 40k shelf. There hidden (somewhat) in the corner was a box of cool looking suits.
I would like to point out that at this stage in my life, I didn't even know what anime was, this isn't true for me currently however since I'm quite a fan of any good anime. You could say that Tau got me into anime and not visa verca like you would expect.
Anyway, I saw on the shelf a box of XV25 stealthsuits. They were sleek, well painted and with their big gattling guns look pritty badarce. It was then that I decided to go with the Tau as my army.

congrates on 100 posts Feeder of life!!!

Everything about Blood Angels seemed to fit perfectly for me, both fluff and playstyle. For anyone who knows anything about the Gundam universe, I have been a big Char Aznable fan for a long time. In a nutshell, Char paints his mobile suits red and fine tunes them for insane speed. So when I first got into 40k and found an army that played basically like a Space Marine version of Char, I jumped right in.

I initially built Necrons cause I was attracted to the look of the army. Then I started reading a friends Codex and loved the fluff. Plus the fact that one other guy at the shop plays them made it an easy choice as I really don't like playing what everyone else is playing.
Then when they pulled Necrons off the shelf I had started reading up on all the 40K books I really got hooked on the fluff behind the BA so I bought some of them so I would have an two armies and plus I have had a blast painting my BA army until last week when my Necrons were re-awakened to rule the universe !!! Bwa hahahahaha

Originally Blood Angels because the starter army was at my local store, and my friend played Dark Angels which shared the codex with them at the time.

Then Chaos because the diversity and options sounded fun (so much for that)

Then Imperial Guard because the models looked awesome

Then Eldar because two of my Eldar playing friends got out of the hobby and sold me their stuff

I started Tyranids cause I've always loved two things dragons and xenomorphs. Anyway stupid me at the time thought they were a copy of the zerg. Anyway all my friends played some variant of space marines, so I picked up bugs and loved watching my big bugs hit there lines and smash all their super soldiers.

I started orks cause I was getting bored of tyranids and they just came out with their new codex. I loved the comedic value of the army. Plus they were good in close combat which I like.

I tried being normal but it's boring so now I'm back to being insane

The colour blue.

When I started playing the only thing that defined Marines were their paint job. There was no such thing as a Blood Angel Codex or any of that, so the choice was really between Blood Angels (red) or Ultramarines (blue). I like blue, and don't like red, so I chose Ultramarines.

Yes it really was that simple (and simplistic).
