I generally take out his weaker elements as quickly as I can, which usually means I end uo facing his 600+ point deathstar with my 1500 point army.
Another way to do things, Manta.

Iago wrote:Very interesting. Lots of answers. How many here think that its dependant on match up, and how much is attributed to player skill?
Is not this a dumb question to ask from the point of a strategy guide? Once the armies are engaged you better convince yourself that it is a lott about playerskill and not on the matchup. True the dice gods might be feckle, but othervice you are just saying that it is an autoloss. That is an exstremly bad adetude to have when playing and will moast likly resolt on a loss.

I send in my 5-man sniper scout team to pwn them in CC, while my Assault Terminators and long range support run or drive at cruising speed in a straight line directly away....
Scratch that... I usually try and multi assault. If it's a cc army, I wait for them to pop a transport, then I layer tactical squads charging in until the Termis can get there to sweep up the bloody mess.

I have found that the only thing that works when playing slower guard armies, like hybrid Guard with blob squads and Leman Russ variants, is to kill their transport and then simply shoot them to bits, because I am too slow to avoid them. I have actually found deathstars very easy to deal with, as I often field a lot of high strength, low AP blasts in my army. If I can wreck their transport (if they even have one) early on, I can simply kill most deathstars in one round of shooting if they end up out in the open. I have dealt with both TH/SS Terminators, Paladins and Lychguard in this way, and the method have worked wonderfully. I am much more afraid of enemies that field a higher number of units, as I have a harder time killing MSU armies effectively.

Muhahaha, have you ever tried to pin a Ld 10 deathstar with a re-roll? It's kinda hard.

And by doing so, you now have 5 units shooting at my Fortuned Seer Council. Sure, they may get pinned but you've just given the rest of my army time to zip around the board to contest/capture/kill

Iranna.
Actually a full Pathfinder Squad can shoot 8 Markerlights, so its only two units shooting at the Seer Council. Fire Warriors with Pulse Carbines can pin anything with that many markers on one target. Then I don't have to bother with them for a whole turn, so it works in my favor.

So of which 4 will hit (on average), taking me down to leadership 6.
10 firewarriors w/ Pule Carbines shoot. 5 hits. 3 Wounds approx.
I'd get my re-rollable armour save of 3+ and the chances of me failing one is ~16%
Here's where my math starts to fail horribly... I have a 4/9 chance of passing with a re-roll which equals some better odds or something... Gah. I hate math.
Personally, I think the odds are pretty weak and I can use wounds shennanigans to make sure I'm never rolling more than 2 dice.
Also, with the lists that I make, I play VERY aggressively. If I'm within 18" of you so is the rest of my army (Outflanking and Star Engines) and with Eldrad, I'm still getting Fortune off on my Council.
