Forge World Newsletter #290:
Hi there,

With December and the festive season upon us, there’s still time to receive your orders before Christmas. In today’s early newsletter we’ve got a new Contemptor pattern Dreadnought weapon, two sets of Space Marine shoulder pads and a brand new (old?) Imperial Guard war machine

Christmas Order Deadlines

On the eve of the festive period, Forge World’s Customer Service team and Despatch warehouse is working around the clock to ensure your Christmas orders are shipped as quickly as possible.
We’ve got full details of our imminent order deadlines at the end of this newsletter, and if you’re outside the UK, we advise you place your standard delivery orders by midnight (GMT) today.

Graia Pattern Rapier Laser Destroyer

The Rapier Armoured Carrier is an ancient device, one of many such technological relics of the dawning days of Mankind’s stellar empire; a bulky, armoured track unit which mounts a powerful antomantic reactor. The Rapier is often armed with a powerful quad lascannon known as a laser destroyer. This has become synonymous with the Rapier Armoured Carrier itself, and the Graia Pattern Rapier Laser Destroyer is perhaps the most common design of this potent anti-tank weapon.

Designed by Will Hayes, the Graia Pattern Rapier Laser Destroyer is a finely detailed full resin kit, which contains parts to build optional Cadian crew, and can be used in several different armies. You can download experimental rules for the Rapier Laser Destroyer from the Forge World website.

Contemptor Pattern Autocannon

This week’s second release is another weapon option for the ancient and hallowed Contemptor Dreadnought. The eagerly-awaited Contemptor Pattern Autocannon, designed by Will Hayes, is fully compatible with both the standard Contemptor Dreadnought and the Relic Contemptor.

Minotaurs Shoulder Pad Sets

A mysterious and darkly famed Chapter, the Minotaurs played a major part in the prosecution of the Badab War. Adding their full Chapter strength to the Loyalist cause, they were most lauded for their brutal and unrelenting near-destruction of the Secessionist Lamenters during the Battle of Optera.

Designed by Simon Egan, these two sets of detailed Minotaurs Shoulder Pads and Minotaurs Terminator Shoulder Pads are compatible with the full range of Space Marine infantry available both from Forge World and Games Workshop.

Like most 40k weapons. Even the normal TLAC arms only have a maybe a dozen rounds each or so and no method of reloading. When was the last time you saw a Space Marine with extra Bolter magazines or indeed anywhere to even put them?

That maybe true for dreads with a limited amount of rounds, but the marines have pouches for extra magazines. And they put them around their belt.
Eh, you only get a few per box and they don't really look like they could fit Bolter magazines, they aren't quite the right shape/size, and even if so, they'd have what, maybe two extra magazines? You can go through that in a couple of minutes in combat

Lol maybe they have chapter surfs run back to the thunderhawk to fetch more mags.

But back on topic those mags on the arms don't fit with me right, I would like to see it with a drum mag.

I'm quite rusty on the 40k rules, how does the vehicle/crewman thing work? What does the extra one do?

Time to dig out those old RT books and put them to good use!

I'm liking these AC arms. The points about the ammo magazines are well made, but GW has always been about form over function. I'm not sure that SMs can fit much of a bolter magazine in those teeny-tiny pouches anyway! Next time I send money to FW, there'll be a couple of Contemptors of some kind as well as a bunch of arms...

The big aquilla under the helmet/head is fully a part of the sculpt of the body and not an add on for the normal contemptor model that I have. I can't comment on the relic version though as I've never seen one in person.

Too bad it takes up a heavy support slot in an IG army list, as it is the last thing that I will ever have free for something like that.

I think that if you want to take an anti-tank unit in heavy support, this is a good choice. One of these things alone seems as powerful or more powerful than a vanquisher to me. It's fragility is a big downside though.

Being able to take 9 Rapiers in heavy support for just over 400 points (with extra crew) seems extremely good value. AP1 AND Ordnance AND S9 AND Twin-Linked means each squadron of three will obliterate any vehicle it shoots at , every turn. The downsides are the medium range, and the fact it uses up all three heavy support choices. But if you can use the Rapiers to murder tanks, take Hellhounds/Varients in Fast Attack for your anti-infantry template fix.

I would infer that that's Forge World's intention - according to the local Redshirt, Heresy-era terminators are also on their to-do list, albeit not a high priority.

The Rapier looks as though it keeps true to the original miniature, which is always a good thing, but for the size of the kit I don't think the price is justified. Admitedly yes, GW are now selling their metal heavy weapons teams for £10 and more each, but and though this thing has more work in it I just feel as though they're been a bit exploitative for selling something so small for such a high price (minus postage too ¬¬). But its Forgeworld and they're selling Cyclops' for £10 and Centaurs for £35, so I guess they're just following the theme of their pricing with this latest item too. An hours plasticard work will pop one of those things out nicely. ^^

Rapier's very pretty, but certainly not worth £25, I'll stick with old metal ones from ebay thanks.

As to reloads/pouches etc, the SM Codex lists the Ultramarines as a typical chapter, with about 1000 servitors, perhaps it's these that lug all the spare ammo and reload the dreads?

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this in another thread, but the Mantic Games Forge Father Jotunn Heavy Hailstorm Cannon would probably make a decent stand in for a Rapier. It appears to be perhaps a little larger, and half the price...though you may need a little conversion skills to either change the Squat into a servitor or change the upper half of the model into a human one. =P

Edit: Actually you can get three of those things for a few pounds more than a Rapier. 0.o

The Forgefather weapon will make a good stand in for the Thudd Gun when Forgeworld update that - shortly no doubt.

Looks like it's time to bring my squadron of original Rapiers out of retirement for a repaint. I shortened the lascannon barrels since the original ones looked like arse - the new one looks much better, but as stated, a bit expensive $$ all things considered.

Update the Thudd Gun? They've had one available for a while - in fact, I need to get around to building mine (and it's Death Korp crew) at some point.

Anyone got a suggestion for a suitable base size?

I need to find my copy of the print-out, but didn't the rules get looked at in the Death Korps army list PDF update?

As note, any input re what size base to use for it would be appreciated.

Looking at it: I don't see a real difference until IA: Apocalypse II(not 2nd Edition, just IA Apocalypse II).

As note, any input re what size base to use for it would be appreciated.

I've never seen the gun proper actually based. I'd assume it would be a Valkyrie sized base though, if I had to play a hunch.

It's almost certainly a 60mm Dreadnought-sized base.
