Fantastic execution. The conversions are subtle, but characterful, and the painting is top notch. Personally, I've been bored by stoner culture to the point of severe distaste and sufficiently jaded by contact with pseudo-rastas that I can't bring myself to believe that this was done in earnest, as MasterSlowPoke (rather skillfully - kudos!) suggests. My personal distaste for the theme aside, though, it's an absolutely mindblowing piece.

It is a refreshing change from the tired parade of models depicting females that for some reason went into battle with no shirt...
It's a change, though I wouldn't call it refreshing.

Just a different kind of nerdiness. I mean, smoke pot if you want, but the whole glorifying of it is kinda silly. That said, it's a cool model, but I agree that without the leaf it would be better.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

And I suppose your aesthetic opinion makes you right? There is no wrong or right in what would make this model "better" as it is the artists choice to depict it the way it is. However it can be said that there is a right or wrong in regards to the use of symbols and heraldry in which MasterSlowPoke makes very valid claims.

I'm not sure but that might not be a stoner joke. The Rastafarian movement has some vaguely militant aspects. The dreadlocks are supposed to be an imitation of a lion's mane, for instance, and the story of the Salassie's life seems like it could work well with the Emprah

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rastafari_movement#Haile_Selassie

The salassie guy was kind of a synthesis of major civil rights leaders in america; he advocated peace and understanding, but didn't euphemize the African struggle for that peace at all, and said plainly that they will fight for it. Rastafarianism adopts different approaches, all of them profess to have a goal of peace, but it's not pacifist rhetoric, entirely. I think rastafari believe in self defense. Which isn't uncommon for christian sects, obviously, and based on other christian sects, professing peace can happen right along overtly bellicose behavior. The idea of taking the rastafari movement and putting it in the context of the holy warriors of the empire fits pretty well.

Also, kids in the US and Europe think reggae is cool and pot is cool, and whatever, to the point that they may even adopt a spiritual attitude about it, but generally no one takes what kids do very serious. Genuine Rastafari treat marijuana as somewhat sacramental--in the way that you might think of wine in the context of church. There are icons on the shoulders of 'imperial' troops that include cups, and those cups exist solely as a result of the biblical connection between wine and the blood of christ. So I see that leaf as being an appropriate and interesting take on the idea of a holy symbol. Certainly, leaves have been used in other contexts, and the iron crosses you see everywhere in the 40k literature are at least *as* out of place, considering that the emperor was never crucified in the fiction of that universe, so it's a symbol without a history. Easily as strange as if you put a star of david on some space marines or put the star of mecca on a tallarn imperial guard regiment. I'm not saying it wouldn't look cool--just that those symbols all have roots in history, and in the context 40k, it's the crozius, iron halo, and imperial eagle that represent the emperor--everything else is borrowing symbols out of context, anyway.

That said, the knit cap is a little silly. But I like the dreadlock idea, and the leaf is done well, and makes sense.

I would buy that this was done in earnest, not as a 'pretty marines' or 'angry marines' style spoof.

Marijuana as a holy symbol? Yyyyeah, not buying it.

Maybe you should buy some books, then.

Rastafari believe that smoking marijuana brings them closer to Jah (Yahweh) as they see it as part of the Tree of Life that is mentioned in the Old Testament. I think Revelations gets quoted a lot, too.

It's just as holy as the idea of drinking wine as the blood of Christ. It's just as appropriate as the wine glasses on the Soul Drinkers, or the Maori symbols many people paint on their Space Sharks.

I see that more as an excuse to smoke pot. This means I can go out and start a movement that claims snorting cocaine symbolizes me inhaling Jesus Christ's ashes, thus bringing me closer to him. Anyway, this isn't a topic about religion and I'd rather not make it one and take away from the model posted. PM me if you really want to debate it.

I'm an atheist with no desire to debate religion, but I do find it highly pompous of you to say that other people don't believe what they actually believe. You might have come across some pseudo-Rastas who only think the religion means "smoke weed everyday", but that's not real any different than coming across pseudo-Christians who believe that some arbitrary level of dedication to God absolves them of any sins they commit. It'd be wrong of me to declare that Christianity is just an excuse for people to think better of themselves, and it'd be wrong of you to declare that Rastas just want to get high and eat potato chips.

Also I don't think Jesus was ever cremated?

paintjob is spot on!!!!! I don't like the knit cap much, it seems a little out of place.

Leaf as emblem works very well. Only thing I think would of worked better was the lion of judah superimposed over rasta flag on shoulder pad.

but to each their own! I could understand why someone might choose the leaf over the lion, but to me the lion has loads more meaning.

anyways thanks for showin the model off to us all! My girlfriend (who has hello kitty marines in the works) thought it was excellent! I had never seen this before and just, wow ya know?
