As for the flashbang incident it wasn't that effective since it was used in an open area. More effective in a room. rather gone with pepper spray. I did notice though it was a young crowd

The earlier points about the Pac NW having a lot of anarchist troublemakers are real ones, too. Everyone remembers the Battle in Seattle, right? Lots of peaceful protestors + a few belligerent troublemakers/anarchists + cops overreacting = bad times for everyone.

Telling people you're about to use excessive force doesn't make it acceptable. And yes I do consider people spraying people who are sitting down as excessive because it should be for self defence rather than moving people out the way.

I think we had a whole thread about that already. Not to say that it can never be discussed again, but is it directly relevant to this thread?

We don't know all that much about this incident yet. From the sounds of it this one sounds much more like violence was directed at the cops first, which is a whole different kettle of fish.

There was an item in the UK news that a group here have developed a bright laser light to flash at crowds. It's so dazzlingly bright it will force them to turn away, they're hoping it will be an alternative to gas and water cannons.

Also from some years ago I heard in the US there was a gas developed that forces people to lie down because the extreme dizziness will make them vomit. Seeing as I don't hear this being deployed, I guess there were health concerns of some sort.

Actually we employed a microwave for crowd control.

The refernce to the flash bang was the effect the law enforcement wanted was not going to happen. Flash Bangs work best in building's. Also the fact there's some shrapnel when a flash bang goes off

I'm not even sure they WERE flash bangs. They used them like arty sims, and that may have been what they were. Loud noise, go away.

3:35- Occupy Seattle blocking Port of Seattle.
3:41- Occupy Seattle protestors arrested.
3:45- Seattle PD moving protestors off street...at least a few in handcuffs for refusing to move.
4:05- Port of Seattle closed Terminal 18, so there are trucks that were not able to get in and out because of Occupy Seattle protestors.
4:07- Truckers who were not able to leave Terminal 18 at Port of Seattle will NOT get paid today.
4:09- Got into an altercation with an Occupy Seattle protestor angry that I asked about workers who will not get paid now.
4:31- Terminal 18 is closed for the night. Occupy Protestors say they're moving to Terminal 5.
4:33- Occupy Seattle protestors blocking Spokane Street
5:40- Pepper spray, flash bangs used in violent Occupy Seattle clash with police at Port of Seattle. Officers were also injured by protestors.
5:41- Occupy Seattle protest at Port of Seattle turned violent when police tried to remove makeshift barricade to open up traffic
5:42- Occupy Seattle protestors hit officers with rebar, threw paint-filled light bulbs and flares.
5:43- Seattle PD says right now no pepper spray was used on Occupy Protestors ... but several reporters and I were sprayed and can confirm it was

According to this Twitter feed the police used pepperspray first, however I doubt in the next two minutes the protesters ran to the store and bought the paint filled light bulbs in the civil disobedience aisle at Walgreens. There was clearly an existing intent to escalate the situation to violent confrontation from the protesters side, but they can (it appears) honestly say they didnt start it.

It is not, however, reasonable to assume this is the case absent any evidence.

I have watched several videos, including about an hours worth of footage from an OWS friendly helicopter orbiting above, haven't seen them yet.

Which gets back to my point about the cops saying stuff was thrown, but the reporters didn't seem to be around to confirm it. What the hell were the reporters doing then?

If the reporters didn't see it, would it kill the reporteres to say that "The cops said X, but we were unable to independently confirm it." or "the protesters claim Y, but we could not confirm beyond this statement."

Lazy journalism is lazy.

HHmmmm I didn't see a cop toss a flash bang either. More I see the video though it doesn't seem like a flash bang unless the sound pick up was that dubbed?

I'm about 80% sure they are arty sims or equivilent. Overhead video you can clearly see the cop lob one bit the object itself is unclear.
