5) Agro (Shadow of the Colossus)
If you've played through Shadow of the Colossus, you know why I have this character on my list. She's a horse, she has no dialog, and yet she was a believable and stalwart companion, much more so than the talking heads and forced love interests encountered in most other games.

4) Kaine (Nier)
It's easy to write Kaine off as some weird Japanese fan service, but those that spent a healthy bit of time with Nier (enough to unlock its extra story content) were treated to a whole lot more. Beyond the over the top swearing and ridiculous outfits, Kaine was really kind of tragic. An outcast from birth, a physical oddity in her world and cursed by a Shade, she still struggled for right despite her well deserved cynicism.

3) Shale (Dragon Age 1)
Dragon Age has a wealth of great characters, and I easily could have put Morrigan in this slot instead of Shale. But Shale was different from the rest of the cast, sympathetic while being a bit monstrous, and utterly believable.

2) GlaDOS (Portal Series)
Insane AI characters are nothing new, but GlaDOS is a breed all her own. Manic, sadistic and yet somehow incredibly likable (in her own twisted way), she somehow manages to simultaneously fill the double role of main antagonist and narrative companion. As innovative as Portal's mechanical design is, I say that a large part of the game's popularity comes from the atmosphere that GlaDOS brings to the game.

1) Master Chief (Halo Series)
The developers of the Halo series did an incredible job with Master Chief, communicating more about the character through visual cues and scenario design than they do with his dialog. Master Chief stands against impossible odds, goes to the most dangerous places in the galaxy and snatches victory from the jaws of defeat. He's equal parts mythological hero and dutiful soldier, embodying the best of aspects of classic myth and modern serviceman. The fact that he's a man of few words makes his infrequent bits of speech all the more meaningful.

I have to say she is a pretty awesome horse, totally dedicated to the quest even though it dosn't even involve her species

5) Lydia - TESV - You get in my way, you stand in front of my spells, you shield enemies from my arrows and you always want to get shouted at. You're probably the most annoying NPC in the history of forever, but I love you for saving my arse, being my meatshield, and being my pack mule.

4) The Guildmaster - Fable 1 - Despite how much I pissed you off, you never once went through with your threat to break me, thank you. Oh, by the way, when I was killing you for your soul in another life, I noticed your will was low, and also that you should try to get your combat multiplier even higher.

3) Arbiter - Halo 2-3 - I played as an Elite!

2) Shadowmere (Or most Horsies, but Shadowmere is the best) - TESV - OMFG A DRAGON! I MUST KICK ITS FACE IN!

1) Adult Link - LoZ: OoT - Because I was badass.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

One Question: Why do people list Gordon Freeman as a favorite character?

I mean, I LOVE the Half-Life games, but I don't really consider him to be one of my favorite. He has no dialogue, no emotion, you never see his face...Yes, I understand that he's saving humanity from Alien Overlords and whatnot, but he's not much of a character in my opinon

[/rant]

And if you're drinkin' well, you know that you're my friend and I say "I think I'll have myself a beer"

That is probably why, actually, you can project anything you want on to him. You are Gordon Freeman, just as you are Samus Arun (excluding the awful Other M). They don't tell you his personality becuase his personality is whatever you want it to be.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Best Dialogue and armor.
2: Simon/Lewis (Minecraft, if they count)
My favorite Vloggers on youtube, plus characters in several mods.
3: Ghost (COD MW2)
Same last name as me and most kick-ass costume.
4: Baby Mario (Mario & Luigi Partners in Time)
Most adorable video game character, and far more useful in mariokart than the big mario
5: Cortana (Halo 3)
Coz it's funny when she lectures you on how important it is that you do the mission exactly as she says, and has a cool costume, if you call it one. Plus, who doesn't want a talking computer lady in your head?

I suppose this phenomenon also explains why some people like Link in the Legend of Zelda and (in my case) Crono from Chrono Trigger. I still can't see how mapping your own personality choice onto a character can warrant counting it as a favorite.

1. Kreia (Darth Traya) from KOTOR II - She reaaaally got in my head man

2. 3Dog from Fallout 3 - he made being a good guy in Fallout 3 worth it. Very Pavlovian.

3. Isabella and Aveline from DA2 - I know im cheating a bit but those two really shine when they're together.

4. Jowy Atreides - Suikoden 2

5. 1up Mushroom - does he count? You always cheer when you see him and he can be a magnificent bastard (leads you to a bottomless pit) best character in the series IMHO

1) Fem Shep from the Mass Effect series, especially in ME2.
2) Dagoth Ur from Morrowind. Most interesting video game villain I've encountered. (HM: Vivec was also an excellent character from said game)
3) HK-47 from KotOR, KotOR II, and SWToR. Easily the funniest character I've encountered in a game. It will never happen, but a crossover with an evil Fem Shep and HK-47 would be amazing. The number of mooks thrown off balconies would be staggering.
4) Divayth Fyr from Morrowind. He's a 4,000+ year old wizard that lives in a secluded tower with 4 female clones of himself. In his dungeon dwells the last known living dwarf. It's hinted he's still alive during Skyrim. Not only is he incredibly crazy, he's also the most powerful character of the playable races to ever exist in TES by a wide margin. He makes Gandalf look like a bitch, without being a Gary Stu. I'm looking at you Elminster. >.>
5) Deekin from Neverwinter Nights. How can you not love the Doom Song? Only character in that game and xpacs that didn't annoy the heck out of me. On an unrelated note, NWN is the worst Bioware game I have ever played. Somehow Obsidian managed to make the sequel even worse (and has the dishonor of creating the worst game I ever purchased!).

After 20 years of games (only 22) this is a pretty hard one. Since a few of my top have been choosen already I'll go for some others that are in my top. Here it goes.

5. Conker from Conkers Bad Fur Day.
How can a game about squirrels and teddy bears be so... not for children. I mean really, a singing poo monster, a drunk bee speaking quite sexually about pollonating a big bosomed sunflower which you eventually get to jump on said bosom. This game was fun to play just for the crazy antics Conker had to go through.

4. Captain Olimar from Pikmin
I can't tell you how many countless hours I've spent just turning "food" items into pikimin just for the sake of doing so. When I was younger I used to want to be Olimar just so I could do the same things he was doing, essentially, using a mass plant-critter army to gather parts for your space ship. O the adventures!

3. Tom Nook from Animal Crossing
Another few months of my life lost within this game. Still remember this clean and straight raccoon telling me that my house loan was "no small sum to sneeze at."

2. Marine from the Doom series (Doom, Doom II, Ultimate Doom....)
Though a really static character, an ultimate bad@%$. Going through wave after wave of the demons of hell. Shooting, punching and blowing up whatever stood in the way of making Earth safe from the onslaught on Mars. Yet it does come to Earth and again, he must cleanup, eventually taking the fight to hell itself and ending the battle... for now

1. Isaac Clarke from Dead Space
What other maintenance man do you know that uses tools to dismember the limbs of your fellows? This guy went through so much in the first one and I was absolutely amazed at how he ended up making it through to Dead Space 2. So many times have I jumped and accidentally pressed the wrong button because something stabbed me from outta no where it seems. I play this in the dark and it works quite well for my little brothers as a horror film.

I'm sure I'll think of a million more after I post this, but here goes.

5) Adam Jensen (Deus Ex)
He never asked for this.

4) Cole Train (Gears of War)
This guy made GoW.

3) Sephiroth (FF7)
His theme music still gives me chills.

2) Wesker (Resident Evil)
Wesker is beyond cool. I think the best thing about him is how he over-acts everything. I loved him in the Latest RE movie for just this reason.

The only one that has yet to be mentioned:
1) Andrew Ryan (Bioshock)
"On the surface, the farmer tills the soil, trading the strength of his arm for a home and lands of his own. But the parasites say "NO! What is yours is ours! We are the state, we are God, we demand our share.""

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

This list has a tendency to change around, but at the moment I'd think it was the following.

5. Zhang Liao, odd one out here, as he's the only one based on a real person from history. Still love the persona Koei created for him mind, and not often you get the chance to play the bogeyman of an entire region of China

4. Liara T'soni, overly eager at first, but matures into a interesting character over the two games, can't wait to see how she is in the third.

3. Master Chief, one of my fave characters in any game, enchanced by the reactions of those around him and obviously Cortanna. Some of the best dialogue in any game goes on between those two.

2. Mordin Solus, perhaps one of the most interesting characters I've ever encountered in any RPG ever, funny, troubled, easy going, inspiring, a great character.

1. Sylvanas Windrunner, Banshee Queeen, leader of the Forsaken, betrayed and vengeful mistress of the undead. A little crazy, but after what shes been through who could blame her.
