As far as the Oil paint goes, I use Windsor and Newton, the color is Cadmium Yellow. I really dont thin it down I actually mix it with a small, very small amount of artist wax and the simply dry brush the oil paint over a golden yellow base coat. The brushing action helps smooth the paint out, it really spreads well and you do not need much of it. It takes patience and practice to work with oils, just keep working it and you will figure it out.
