There are some good faction specific forums out there.

The ones I read are fantasy related, though, like asrai and
the ogre kingdoms one (i can't think of the name right now).

There are tons and tons of great sites out there... liking something else doesn't make anyone more or less of a fan of any particular site IMO. Obviously, I love Dakka and regard it as the best all around site, but this doesn't mean I don't appreciate some of the other sites and personalities/editorials available out there. Off the top of my head here are a few other sites I have enjoyed mini related -

Druchii.net for all things Dark Elf related, is the only other I used to check often, not so much since I dropped Wahammer.

It's sister site was Asur.org for High Elf fans. (not sure if that address has changed mind.)

There was a Mordheim one too, but I seem to have lost the site name atm.

It'd be nice to find a forum that wasn't viciously opposed to Games Workshop. It seems like most of them, including Dakka, just exist so people can whine about how terrible GW and their games are.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Thats just the net though, it partially exists so folks can moan about stuff.

Ignoring those type of threads, I take more interest from the discussions that are about the game, ideas to do with the background, painting sections and articles, to show how healthy a gaming site is.

In that regard Dakka is looking very strong.

Sadly a truth of the net is, the strongest voices are those who feel a need to hate on something. As long as a company doesn't take those voices as the basis for their fan base, then things should be fine.

Great thing about that is if you are fed up with GW and their never ending 'annual GW PLC (tm,c) price adjustments' then fourms can point you in the right direction of something else that tickles your fancy.

I have gotten into Ambush Alley Games Force on Force and Tomorrow's War and I haven't regretted it for a second. The rules are to my liking ( reaction based games not IGO-UGO), I like historical models and periods ( Korean War, Vietnam, Cold war gone hot era) and they got sci-fi rules in Tomorrow's War that is scale indifferent. So if I wanted to play in6mm epic size I can or if I want to play 28mm I can using the same rule set all you have to do is adjust the turn limit and measurements. The game also has no army list and is scenero driven, so it's not a 'last man standing' type of game. Just like a real army you have to fullfill your mission objectives. It's not great for pick up games with total strangers, but if you have a gaming group that thinks alike and would rather play out scenero's then 'last man standing/wipe out the other side' kind of games a campaign can be a total blast.

I use 20mm scale models which are a little smaller then GW models but only cost a pound a model. So for 80£ I got two full armies one USMC and a iraqi fedyadeen army. For vehicles 1/72 scale model kits are the same scale as 20mm so if you have a FLGS you should be able to find kits rather easly.

Their fourms are a great positive place where the game designers actually talk to you and tell you why they did rule X like they did. I personally think the best thing about AAG is the community that has sprung up around it. I thought historicals where old fat smell men who sit in basments and bitch because your Grande Armee's cuffs where green and not blue like you painted them. Boy was I wrong. I can't wait to kill some 'American Capitalist pigs' with my VC "You die GI you die!!"

How can you make such a broad statement about most of the people in here whining about GW when there are untold thousands of people that go here (according to Legoburner's statics given a few months back) on a daily basis? Did you take a poll? Did you PM every person here on Dakka and got their opinion?

There is a reason why this has become a primer site.

Dakka has much more than just topics about GW products and as more and more people go and get into different games systems they post up on this site. I love their painting topics, as well as the DCM area too as that place is very laid back and everyone there is pretty much civil about their ideas and comments. I like Dakka because of it's differences and liberties that are not generally seen on other sites.

But myself and others have posted other sites that they deemed good to take a look.

Perhaps "you" should take a look.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

I started out on the Waagh but didn't post much. If you like INSANE conversions check those gits out

I then went to 40konline when i was getting into other races but I found the moderation to be too heavy handed so I left.

I started hanging out at both here and Warseer. Warseer seems like an alright place but it was Daka that stole my heart so this is my home now.
