Those Land Rovers will be most welcome indeed, I just hope they're a bit sturdy unlike that 1:48 Tamiya Humvee. Erm, I mean, "U.S. Modern 4x4 Utility Vehicle".
Well, any plastic kit for display modelling will have thinner parts than the GW kits which are built for fairly rough handling.
That said, wargamers have been using plastic models successfully for decades.
The main worry with the vehicles is the framework which is probably only 1mm thick in scale.
Aye, my group is a mixed bunch of folks, some handle with car, the others have the delicacy of a toddler. So far I've been lucky snatching up a few 1:43 die-cast cars for cheap along with a two 1:48 Unimog kits from some Russian company who markets them as "build yourself some toys", but Rovers have proven illusive so far. My biggest worry is whether or not the axles will hold up with these Rover kits.

You could replace them with brass rod or at least reinforce them?

That did cross my mind, won't know for sure if it is a viable option until I have the actual kits in hand. With no actual release dates given, that might take some time..

If I were worried about the axles I would splatter a glob of Araldite across them and paint it as mud.

It's nice to see Airfix still going. It's also good to see them starting to do etched detail sets for some of the forthcoming kits.
I will, however, be wary when buying another Airfix kit. I picked up their 1/48 spitfire before Christmas to do up as a present for someone and was horrified by the quality of it all as the chassis/wing join was a massive gaping cavern. I'd guess it's quite an old set though as there were update sprues in the box with slightly more accurate wings...
