I have to agree with shadowsnip, Star Spangled Banner(lets face it, any song that has its roots from a drinking song has awesome written all over it) Flower of Scotland in second, then the USSR anthem, its one of those anthems that flat out get your attentions.

Star Spangled Banner in first? Its not even top 5 I'm afraid, it doesn't make you sit up and pay attention the way other anthems do. La Marseillaise is definately first.

I want to clarify, I have absolutely no problem admitting Bias, but what really does it for me is the fact that the beat is in fact from a drinking song, not unique lol

I wonder what "God Save the Queen" sounds like in French.
Funny thing about "My Country 'Tis of thee", we used to sing it in kindergarten and then they decided to take it out of the morning announcements. However, I never understood the words too well and ended up singing, "My country Italy" instead, was very confused about this.
Shadowseer_Kim wrote:Aye Flower of Scotland is a great Anthem. Almost right up there with the Welsh one.
Irelands Call, is another mighty anthem played at the rugby matches, that ranks up there.
Ireland's Call isn't the national anthem though. The actual national anthem is pretty dry and militaristic, and also, it's in Irish, so it's a bugger for foreigners.
I've often seen confused tourists in country pubs when the band plays the anthem and everyone stands and mouths along to the archaic gabbletongue.
My dad is really awkward about it, he'll go around and tell anyone sitting down to stand up. By the same token he berated me when I was moving to England and said I'd better stand for their national anthem. I didn't bother saying they rarely play it in pubs over here.
Anyhow, in case anyone wants to hear it, the name translates as The Soldier's Song.
I am a very patriotic person, but I will be one of the first to admit that the Star Spangled Banner is rather...underwhelming. There are definitely much better songs that could serve as our national anthem.
When it comes to other anthems in general though I love the UK's: God Save the Queen. I think it is an absolutely wonderful song and have stood up and sung it with fellow pub patrons during my travels in England. Unfortunately nobody ever sings all three verses. Even though it isn't an official song for Britain, I also find "Rule Britannia" to be an absolutely amazing piece. I would very much love to come see it performed at the Last Night of the Proms.
