This is also pretty funny. I do like Dawn of Awesome more, but I'm glad you posted that

Automatically Appended Next Post:
DoW II games a good, but personally I prefer the feel of the original and Chaos Rising's singleplayer, with the focus on four squads. Yes, you can sort of emulate that in Retribution, but you end up with one-man units, and you still would want to requisition other units. Chaos Rising's setup in that regard would have been perfect, if they had attached two lower-ranking librarians to orion's unit.

Loved that about Soulstorm as well, though I'm fairly sure it was introduced with one of the earlier expansions already.

Brother SRM wrote:Soulstorm standalone expansion (this was actually outsourced to a separate developer, who added in really, really hokey air units, a broken at launch Sisters of Battle army, and just a generally unnecessary rehash of the game)
Sisters were never "broken". There was an exploit with selling and re-building outposts, but I've never played with anyone who did that, nor did I do this myself. You had to actively want to cheat, it wasn't some accidental imbalancing.

I also didn't consider the perfection of territory control (compared to the previous version at least, see Locclo's comment) unnecessary, though I've never actually bothered with the previous campaign for long, so perhaps Soulstorm felt "fresher" for me than it did for you. Certainly there were lots of areas where the campaign could still be improved upon, but all in all I had loads of fun, and don't get all the rage on the developer that I've seen some people harbour. Loved both new races' visual design and sounds, how they fit in with the rest (souls/faith mechanics), and the campaign fluff.

Besides, given the existence of the all-in-one box there's no reason not to get everything DoW1 in one go ($20 on amazon btw, much cheaper than Steam if it's really $50 there), if only to have all the races.
When I felt bored, I often just did some large scale skirmish versus Tau and IG or Chaos and IG. Guard certainly slotted in a lot to complement the other armies, I have colour schemes for Gue'vesa and Blood Pact.
Playing against Necrons and Dark Eldar was always great fun as well, tho.

In terms of multiplayer, there is this one map that feels like some bit out of a campaign, only for co-op. Quite awesome:

I'm not sure if this is true because the whole thing bored me so much I could've be bothered to continue playing it (whereas the previous games I played alot), but I have heard that Soulstorm had even less of a storyline than Dark Crusade did.

The fliers were also done in a ludicrously cheap and lazy way. That alone earnt my condemnation. If they couldn't do them in a remotely fitting way they should have been left out entirely. Instead they seemed to add them in in the hopes that people would buy it because "ooooh there are new fliers!".

Also the Ion Cannon seemed a bit dumb. Didn't the melta weapons of the Sisters of Battle look like lasers as well?

Well, I suppose the Soulstorm campaign doesn't offer much for someone who recently played Dark Crusade. It is essentially the same thing with just small (but critical) fixes here and there. Storywise, there isn't much of a difference. In Dark Crusade, the McGuffin is a piece of Titan technology, in Soulstorm it's a Warp Storm. Both serve only to trigger the appearance of the various races to duke it out on the planets' surfaces.

In this, both campaigns also mimick the official Medusa V campaign that GW held for the Tabletop once. When you want to create a situation with so many different races fighting each other at the same time, there just isn't much you can do storywise - so it was either this, or fewer races.

For what it's worth, I also noticed a lot of people didn't catch the fluff snippets in the various sectors' descriptions. Quite a few nice little stories embedded in there.

SomeRandomEvilGuy wrote:The fliers were also done in a ludicrously cheap and lazy way. That alone earnt my condemnation. Ehhh, so-so. I will agree they felt fairly pointless. Still nice for scouting - or pursueing fleeing enemies.

The "floating in place" bit bothered me as well, but I'm not sure if that could have been done differently. Would have looked better to see them fly in circles or do strafing runs from the off-screen, but for the former the maps were too small and for the latter I could see issues with defense - either that they cannot be defended against, or that they're shot down too quickly, all depending from which angle they approach.

SomeRandomEvilGuy wrote:Also the Ion Cannon seemed a bit dumb.
The Tau moonbase? Well, I'd say it looked a bit silly due to the Lego colours, but the idea was sound. In essence, it was supposed to be the Tau's Paris Gun, bombarding hostile targets on Kaurava's surface one by one as the moon rotated around the planet, all from a safe distance.

SomeRandomEvilGuy wrote:Didn't the melta weapons of the Sisters of Battle look like lasers as well?
Mhh ... no, I'd rather describe them as glowing streams of blue particles cooking the target. Quite how I imagined meltas to look, tbh, as per their GW description. Isn't that how THQ made Marine meltas look in the Kill Team game as well?

DoW2 is great I started playing once they added chaos on the first expansion until then I was all for DoW. DoW2 is pretty much the same as Company of Heroes if you ever played it but with marines. It depends must of the time on position/upgrade counters, while on DoW you could overrun your enemy with mass units, in DoW you need the right counters to stop your enemy. On the down side the learning curve in multiplayer is pretty hard you just get clowned the first games no matter what, most of the games are fast since once your get a critical point advantage and well secured it is pretty hard to turn the tide, unless you get loyal terminators and become godlike.

This is actually a full match, started recording like 1 min after the game actually started:

I will say that I did enjoy my time with Soulstorm, but I played far, far less of it than I did Dark Crusade, Winter Assault, or vanilla DoW. I've gotten most of my entertainment value from Soulstorm from my Dawn of Awesome cartoons because it transitioned from the typical over-the-top voice acting of DoW into ridiculous, hilarious territory.

Considering Relic had handled fliers admirably in Company of Heroes, it would have been nice if they implemented a similar system. Basically, you call them in as global abilities, but they can be shot down. Rise of Nations handled airpower the best in an RTS though, where you had them take off from a landing field and they would always be moving. When they complete their mission/fuel timer runs out, they fly back home automatically. Would've been nice if they did something similar, even if it was just flying back to your Machine Cult or whatever. Also, the choices in airpower were fairly lazy for some races, but I absolutely loved the Marauder bomber. Great model in-game, and it was pretty cool to use until it decided to drop a bomb and just sit there hovering in the air. Woefully inelegant handling of airpower.

Yeh, but CoH (which I enjoyed) had much larger areas. In DoW, it takes a minute or so to get from one end of the map to the other. On foot. So flyers would have either been hilariously slow or you wouldn't have been able to shoot them down in time.

I guess there could still have been a way to do it better, and it's a shame they didn't - but it never truly bothered me that much that I considered aircraft in general a negative trait of the game.

VO-wise, I loved the narrator's voice. Like some crazy old grandpa retelling his wartime story. Would make an awesome Ecclesiarchy Cardinal. Over the top? Yeah, maybe ... but let's be real here, so is 40k in general.

All in all, of course I'm also "suffering" from faction bias - though I will say that I also enjoyed playing Tau or Guard. The latter especially with the Steel Legion mod.

Spoiler:

You can see the wheeled heavy bolter on one pic there. <3

Yup! I'm sure DoW2 has mods as well, though very likely not as many. From what I heard, DoW1 is easier to mod, plus it's been around longer. I'm not sure which game sold more units, though.

Here you go: http://dawnofwar.filefront.com/

xSoulgrinderx wrote:What would be the best game to play as the guard?
Personally I'd recommend DoW1 (Winter Assault, or just get the complete pack), primarily because you'll have more units on the field. For me, Guard is about numbers, and this is something where DoW2 is sorely lacking. DoW2 is, in my opinion, better suited for small elite forces like Marines or SoB (the latter not existing there) due to its smaller yet more detailed focus on squads and characters, but not so much for the big battles with tank formations and waves of infantry.

Though the Steel Legion mod does an even better job at displaying ridonculous amounts of vehicles than the official Cadian army of DoW's Winter Assault expansion.

Also, just found there's apparently a Titan mod as well, lol.

Actually, you can run a boatload of Guard in DoW2, and it's like playing somewhere between an IG tabletop and WW2 army. It's awesome. Also, they die hilariously fast, which is also awesome. Finally, the Manticores use the Nebelwerfer sound effects from Company of Heroes, which is 3x awesome, and most of the voice actors played the Brits in that game.
