Good. Let's tune that a little bit:

- Militaristic dystopia: Imperium.
- Eldritch abominations: Daemons.
- Bitter renegades, occult practitioners: Chaos Space Marines.
- Machines / Undead: Necrons.
- Primitives, barbarians, rogues, pirates(?): Orks.
- Ancients, magic users: Eldar.
- Nosferatu, necromancers, assassins: Dark Eldar.
- Sci-fi utopia. "The Federation": Tau.
- Knights: Space Marines.
- Religious zealots: Sisters of Battle.
- Mage knights, paladins: Grey Knights.
- Aliens: Tyranids.
- Vikings, honorable traditionalists. Klingons(?): Space Wolves.
- Berserkers / outcasts: Blood Angels (some will also say 'vampires' and I'll be ok with it, though I think the vampire theme, while prevalent in older codexes, is massively downplayed in the current one).

And there's another.

- Engineer-mages. Arcane technologists: AdMech. Sadly without an army.

Note that some (not to say all) of our armies actually embody a mixture of tropes. Space Wolves, for instance, are honorable, brawny norsemen bound by tradition and comradery and werewolves at the same time.

@English Assassin: Actually you've got a point here. Sci-Fi archetypes are limited but, in my opinion, there's still plenty of untapped potential. Playstyles are a different issue.

Until the rules change enough to allow for a unique strategy or army style to surface, I think we won't be seeing a new army for 40k.

That's a pretty inclusive list. I'd be willing to be convinced that there are archetypes as-yet unexploited or themes and motifs thus far unused, but I struggle to think of any myself which would fit easily into the distinct style and tone of the setting as a whole.

What I do think the studio could pull off successfully, and which I'd be very glad to see, would be more variant lists - Chaos and Genestealer cults as Imperial Guard variants, for instance. I wouldn't object to seeing some new, narrowly-defined races or factions added as mercenaries or auxiliaries to established armies either - the oft wished-for Demiurg for Tau lists, for instance, or Beastmen for Guard or Chaos armies.

The tau codex probably won't be updated until after eldar, and will still need very specific tactics that revolve around us avoiding melee even after the update.

NONE of the xenos armies are easy to play. Playing orkz is like setting a video game to medium, SM and IG and all those imperial ones are like setting it to easy, and the remainder of the xenos armies, as well as chaos, are like cranking it up to nightmare.

I don't think there are any more bases to cover, as far as xenos. Except a dedicated space skaven army, or an army of six-armed whales with plasma guns. Or any number of things.

Xenos are the one thing they can keep inventing though. No one expected tau, after all....

We don't need any new codexes, we need the armies we already have to be expanded upon. Many existing factions include many species not seen in game, even Tyranids have alien slaves to do their bidding. Although in my opinion most of the "wish-listed" armies should be given to the Tau empire (It doesn't feel like a conglomerate of species, as-is. It needs more, better-integrated species, IMO). It'd be cool seeing Orks getting some new alien pets, or an army helping the Necrons reverse their bio-transference, etc...

I agree in that existing factions should be given alot more variety before adding in more xenos codex's. As mentioned above there is alot of room for growth.

Renegade Guard with Xenos Conscripts
Orks with Lumbering Ogre weapons platforms, slaves, conquered mercs
Necrons with cultists, bio experiments etc

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahhahahahahahaha your the first player ive ever seen say the space marines are hard to play and xenos races are easier. lol Playing anything Imperium related is pretty easy.
sorry for the typed laugher, I just have never heard that before. Most people I know switch from Marines because they are too easy to play and want something more exotic and less 'i win out of the box' deal.

I do agree, no more races until they get rid of some of the space marine chapters. Do we really friggin need 5 blood space marine codexs? Why not just split up nid background into the hive fleets with special rules and bitz based on their devouring or split choas demons into 4 distinct codexs with tons of new minis and mostly useless minis no one will use once they figure out the spam choices lol.

PS> Im really really really hating on playing this week, getting bored of the game entirely.

Not Nicassar. They are supposed to be frail and unfit for combat. Maybe as support units?

What about Dragon like warriors? Fire breathing flying guys that sorta look like lizard types? Not lizard men but more like monsterous creatures, An entire army of them that use a combo between lots of rail and heat based tech.

Their vehicles could be massive Flyers bigger than any tyranid or deamon.

Care to explain or support either of those assertions?
Theres no empire i. 40K that actually rivals the Imperium. The Eldar are a dying race, with both too few numbers and would never be able to be organized into a large enough force to hurt the empire. The Tau are tiny and lack means of fast travel to expand, the orks are too Scattered, warring, unsophisticated, and could never be organized into one sole empire, the tyranids arent an empire seeing as they just devour everything they come across, and the necrons have no motives other than to destroy, and thus could never be an empire.
What 40K needs is another rival to the imperium, to both act as a balancer to its power, as well as take some weight off its shoulders. Something similar to the imperium, yet different in culture and ways at the same time. Its a big change, and most likely wont happen, but that just my thoughts.

No, I'm Xenos through and through (I only play xenos.....and Daemons) but I don't really want to see a further Xenos army. GW struggle to keep up with the codecies that are currently in existence, adding more codecies to the mix is just going to make it harder. This is one of the reasons that I don't approve of GW's apparent need to create more Marine codecies.

Im not. The xenos are already neglected, with yet another added? We simply wouldn't get updates ever with yet more xenos to keep up with. The only xenos army addition I might not hate would be official status for kroot mercs.

I'd prefer all races to gain the ability to field Mercs than just have Tau fielding a massive variety, obviously nothing stops them being modelled atms as counts as but it would be nice to "pay" points wise for mercs to be fielded in the army, possibly with some kind of Loyalty mechanic to represent their mercenary nature.

Just so we see some of the lesser races without playing tau.

Well the tarellians and kroot and some humans already fight for the tau. They probably are going to be in the 6ed tau either way.
