In the codex I'm looking at HK missiles are 10 points each, has that changed somewhere?

Since you are castling up, at 10pts they might be worth it. Land Speeder Typhoon is probably more useful as they work in both defensive and offensive builds.

That is definitely not a castling up list. Just pick one, play it a few time and then decide. Everyone has their own take, only you can play the game.

I wouldnt do this, because marines are not designed to go full defensive. they are an army built around the idea of taking the midfield and dominating from there. If you stay back in your castle, armies like grey knights, dark eldar, and ig, that either have more resilient firepower (fortitude) or better range will happily move up, and start to shoot you off the board.

This puts you in a bad position, as your have to advance against these armies to win, and your list isnt designed to do it.
We used to have a local guard guy who would do this, and he won 1 out of every 15 games or so.

How do you figure It's not?
The land speeders deflect deep strikers from my terrain pieces
the Ironclads keep the enemy from closing too quickly by keeping them midfield so my army can shoot longer.
The rifleman hangs back and shoots, as do the predators and the TFC, all babysat by a techmarine to repair them.
I can bolster 2 ruins & cluster mine 1 of them.
and late game the storms can carry my scouts into scoring position.
Lysander + Cassius + Command Squad death star can either be deployed forward via drop pod, or hang back to counter.

No? I thought it was pretty defensive.

Obviously 'pick one and play' would be preferable if I had opponents and models.
I'm on the road for work, I have neither at the moment, hence the extra time on dakka to discuss tactics.

This is actually something I'd have to overcome; like I said in the beginning, I'm not looking to win tournaments with this army; but I would like a nice fluffy showcase army that can win enough to be playable.

I'm trying to incorporate everyones suggestions as playing defensively is totally alien to me.

I think you are talking about a different list. The list you posted does not have two techmarines. The TFC Techmarine cannot repair stuff until his gun is destroyed. There is no 2nd techmarine to bolster another ruin.

Lysander is arguably a defensive commander. But Chaplain is not. A better defensive commander is Librarian.

Your list has 3 drop pod. If you are not deploying them with the Ironclads and the Troops. I think those 105 points can be better used somewhere else. If you are deploying them in Drop Pod, I feel that this is not a defensive play. Perhaps I misunderstand what you meant by defensive.

The Ironclad can already provide mid-field presence holding the line. Nobody will want to drive up to AV13 with meltaguns. You can take that 105 points and make the tac squad + the command squad having Razorback LasPlas. That would saturate long range and mid range.

Another line of thought can be that: the Drop Pods are carrying surgical strike troops that will take out the enemy backline. Perhaps the best defense is a tactical offense. I honestly don't know which would suit your style best. My recommendation is still for you to try it out, take some pix, write a battle report and we will all marvel at how good the list is :-).

Still not quite sure what you are looking for.
Some of the points are rough guesses but try the following if you are desperate for a defensive list:

155 MotF gun and bike,

125 dread 2TL autocannon
125 dread 2TL autocannon
155 dread TL lascannon, TLautocannon
155 dread TL lascannon, TLautocannon
100 thunderfire cannon
100 thunderfire cannon

200 Telion, 8 snipers then a ML
100 5 scouts, ML and cloaks.
100 5 scouts, ML and cloaks.

then maybe some typhoons if you want more points.

Right, I don't think I was ever really clear about what I was looking for.
Thanks Mfletch: Dig the MotF list, not my bag, but right on, much appreciated.

I'm looking forward to letting this thread die.
